  This seems to be an example in transparency, whether we read Hebrew or not.

  I wonder if it would be possible to do the same with every scroll, paper, whatever, so more and more people could verify Bible translations independently.

  Have you ever found anyone who "writes" in tongues? Curiously enough, the Holy Spirit, sorry, holy spirit, never inspires anyone to do that. People claim to be able to read even if illiterate (John Smith), to be able to speak (everyone), but no one claims they can write.

  the above is a phrase taken from an article written by steven pinker in the review of this weekends wall street journal.

  the title is violence vanquished and presents the thought that human history has been so loaded with tribal violence in particular, that our current era is "the most peaceable era in human existence".. battle deaths and murder generally have declined substantially across centuries to the low level they generally are today.

  i admit i am mystified as to why we don't see much more violence and crime at present, in this ugly economy.

  I do get the point that the person who made this stament means "globally". But, if you were to ask this question to Latin Americans, they would think this is in very poor taste.

  That said, I think that the real point here is hidden (not intentionally). Whether we live in violent times or not, that violence is not the sign of Armageddon. Things don't happen "according to prophecies". It's about time we understand that earthquakes, or violence, or whatever, do not happen in fulfillment of the way a group of men interpret the Bible, making due reference to the fact that such men derive their personal power from spreading that myth.

  Yes, not only every religion, but every culture passes lessons using tales.

  I am more interested in who determined what was moral and what was not. Was it man, or was it God? Before we go too far, I need proof that such a God exists. Otherwise I will think it was just a man who wanted to pass his own opinions as God's word.

  Wait! According to you, P Sacramento, this is what the author of the Book of Job did!

  I think this answers whose standards were taken in consideration.

  By the way, were those good standards? What about the murder of Job's children? How were they "rewarded"? They weren't even part of the bet! God's standards - I mean, the author's standards imply that it's fine to murder all of Job's children just for the sake of winning a bet whose outcome is known already. Great!
