hi, folks,.
for many years my immediate family and i have been messing with stinging insects of all kinds.
in fall (when they are most active), our phones about ring off the hook.
Henderson? Would that be the one in Nevada just south of Las Vegas? Heat and a lack of water would be the prime difficulties for them in that area, but if they found a spot that was sheltered enough, it's entirely possible. There are Africanized (Killer) Honeybees in that area though, and I wonder if that was what they were. Both could make a nest that big.
No, sorry, New Zealand. I should have said LOL

German Wasps - that's probably what ours were, we had a creek run down the back of the property.
We also used to get swarms of Paper Wasps (I think that's the name) they loved the cedar weather boards, forever destroying small nests.
Just checked, German wasps are Yellowjackets

Those in the picts are very impressive, i certainly wouldn't want to be anywhere near them.
When we were building our house in Henderson we found a 3 foot wasp nest in the ground along the bush line, council came and destroyed it, apparantly it wasn't the normally native wasp variety.
