Mill Hill Disfellowshippings

a few months ago there was a thread about a couple of elders at the mill hill bethel being disfellowshipped because they disagreed with some wt doctrine (i can't recall exactly what it was) and that several other betheliteswere under 'investigation'.

i haven't heard anything since, does anyone know anything more about this?.

Hi Freddo,

I do know Mike Pottage (if I'm right, he was a missonary in french-speaking africa, and made constant reference to it in his talks) and he used to be nice to me - but I know what you mean about the stuffiness and pharisee thing. To be honest, a lot of the outlines.......I mean, it is pretty hard to NOT sound like a Pharisee when you are reading or following them. I think, knowing him, he probably didn't mean to - then again, I wasn't there, so maybe I should just remain silent on that.

The michael porter thing - that was just......bad. really bad. I don't even know how to talk about the shockwaves in bethel, but also the sort of denial of reality in bethel about it. very very bad episode. I can only say how sorry I personally am for the victims of that.

the answer is - public talks, talks in the congregation, preaching to bethelites who needed help, and of course in our confidential work which often included explaining to other witnesses in bethel the meaning of bible verses - it all contributed to the detection of our wicked idea that we were all subject to the bible

how could we say what the WT did, when it was teaching falsehood, and telling people to work hard, like hamsters on a wheel, always feeling guilty for not being good enough, trying harder and harder, so trapped in a terrible cycle - when that wasn't part of the bible message?!

Hi,

certainly, if you have any questions about what happened, or Bethel, feel free to ask. I'll do my best to answer fairly! Because we were all serving in the congregations, we were all giving public talks etc that were teaching what we all knew to be true, teaching falsehood, and telling people to work hard, like hamsters on a wheel, always feeling guilty for not being good enough, trying harder and harder, so trapped in a terrible cycle - when that wasn't part of the bible message?!

As for the courage - I really don't think it was that as such. Really, they asked, and kept the inquistion up aginst all of us, interviewing all our friends and associates, monitoring us etc, for a period of months (they recorded one of my public talks and made constant reference to it in my JC - i have it somewhere, will try to dig it out) - what can you do? Deny what you know to be true just so you can talk to your friends and family? I know others have made that choice, and that is absolutely fine and right for them, because of their circumstances - but for me and the others at the time......well, it just got to the point where you have to decide - lie and deny your beliefs, or just tell the truth. I suppose we just did what we had to. There was no courage, believe me!

Hi,

just a little clarification, they weren't elders in mill hill. They were in other congregations. There were 3 elders, and one servant, all serving in responsible positions at Bethel, 2 elders and the servant involved in what the Society laughably refers to as "confidential" work. All 4 were disfellowshipped for apostasy - the MS went first, then the three elders in due time, one of whom was a partaker of the emblems. All 4 were disfellowshipped for believing that the entirety of the ransom, including the new covenant, and the mediatorship and everything else in the bible, applied to everyone. I can tell you that none of them wanted to be disfellowshipped, but there was no choice really.

I know this because I was one of them. Hope that this has cleared up your questions.

now, more jws skirt away from expressing what they are and who they represent.

in the old days, you could comment at a meeting and express the research you did on a subject.

jw's on this site could be disfellowshipped by certain hardline boe's for infractions that 'real' people would find unbelievable.. can you imagine this conversation?.

co-worker: did you say you had recently left your faith as a jehover?.

jw: well,,, not exactly.. co-worker: you didn't leave?

I thought this conversation really illustrates the nature of power - because in reality, that is what has corrupted this body of men, power, and the thrill of concentrating and executing it. The real question is how responsible the rank-and-file JW's are for the predicaments they find themselves in......

under the article " the faithful steward and it's governing body " there were some very telling quotes which could indicate how the wt society is tightening the control of it's members - and trying to justify more partaking of the emblems at the memorial since the numbers partaking have gone up from about 8,000 to 10,000 since they no longer feel that the sealing of the anointed ended in 1935.. so first off, notice this quote indicating the importance of elevating the governing body over the rest of the anointed around the earth.

Alas, I am not on the all-powerful GB, otherwise I too would wield influence and power far beyond what is merited by scripture! LOL

As for my closeness to the language - well, most of it is written by British people now, or at least heavily influenced by our British bretheren, so it can't be that hard for me!

As for the 12, I wouldn't be surprised, but I think they would wait until the teaching is more solid before they allow outright comparisions to be made between them and the apostles, although in this article, they already suggest that they are equal, and by inference, have the same authority.

This smacks of the typical attitude of the GB and its "Nethinim" class. I believe it will not be long before the term "FDS" will be applied to the GB, and the "domestics" to the rest of the "annointed" and the "other sheep". It may well be that they will use the (specious) argument that the FDS in the 1st century was only the apostles, and they had to correct and adjust the other annointed thru letters, inspired writings, and visits. They will no doubt say that God has appointed them to the same role today - indeed, it will be a central plank in the theology. Later, I am sure they will add that the "appearance of the other sheep today, in accordance with God's will, means they too are part of the "Master's belongings", given the to the faithful slave to administer in our day. As such, since Jehovah God and Jesus Christ trust the faithful slave, should we all, whether of the annointed or earthly class? Indeed, the evidence shows that God views our obedience to the faithful slave, or Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses, as central to our salvation."

I can't say "I know how you feel", because all our experiences are different, but I can say that I really empathise. I suppose the thing is that when you are depressed, and you feel like you are searching for something, anything to give you that sense of well-being again, that sense of peace and happiness, you end up looking back at the organisation, and thinking that maybe the security and the routine is worth it.

If you have family there, and you think that that is the problem, then association with them might help you to cope better. But you have to ask yourself -

- If I don't believe it, could I sit at the meetings and pretend I do?

- Could I make all the sacrifices that they will ask me to? And could I mentally cope with the sacrifices?

- Would it make my depression worse?

You have probably thought all this actually, so apologies. Maybe you are searching for something, maybe you need to simply ask yourself whether there are other belief systems in God that you can look to. One thing I would say is this - biblically speaking, that organisation's policies and doctrines will not give you the "peace of God".
