Thanks for all the feedback, but blargh. We tried to talk and just ended up arguing. He starts talking about what's in the Bible and I can't do scriptural gymnastics so I lose (in his eyes). My visceral response to his Bible citing also has him thinking that I'm afraid to look in the Bible, which I think tells him more that he's right. So, it seems like my actions are also only reinforcing his beliefs. See? Blargh. At times, he really makes religion ugly for me. Sorry to be mopey, but I am really not looking forward to the months ahead when I completely should be. I also wonder, for those of you that have been on this board a long time, how many like me you've seen come and go.

So...I've been feeling a tightness in my chest thinking about the upcoming holiday season. You know, October = Halloween; November=Thanksgiving; December=Christmas, etc. etc. I'm not sure how to approach them with my Dub (for those who don't know, I'm a non-JW, never have been one, never will be). He's gone with the flow before (although you can see the guilt almost eating him alive), so I'm not sure what the best approach would be. I want to set up a system where our child will be able to enjoy them too. Any thoughts? It'd be nice if I could somehow give my Dub a situation where he doesn't have to feel so guilty about participating. Would anything have worked for you guys? And if not (because he doesn't always seem to be an over-zealous uber-Dub), can you think of anything that might work?
Oh, and I hope everyone on here realizes how much we take for granted! I never thought once that I would have to consider one day whether my mate would celebrate holidays with me. Just always assumed they would and looked forward to those warm, family-oriented seasons!

Were You Always Feeling Guilty As A Witness?
by minimus ini think the religion works on guilt.
everyone is made to feel they're not good enough some how or perhaps they practice a "secret sin" and it gnaws at them.
so they decide to pioneer or "do more", recognizing they can never really make up for whatever shortcomings they have.. were you a guilt ridden jw?

I 'm no Dub, but I see it firsthand. It makes me ill to see a religion that motivates by guilt. Actually, it seems like the two common feelings are guilt or self-righteousness.

"Hey mom, I'm home!"
by dissed ina jw called my wife to talk business yesterday, and voluntarily mentioned her son was living with them again.. now you have to understand, we have not associated with the jw's for 13 plus years.
so it took my wife by surprise that a jw, knowing our situation, would mention this.
but it gets better, there is more to this story.. she then volunteered, he's been living at home with them for over a year since.......bethel "re-assigned" him as she said sarcastically.. "how long was he at bethel?

Can anyone speculate seriously about why they're being "laid off"? What reasons do they send them home?

paul makes no sense???
by highdose inis it just me, but when i read my bible (nwt) i found whole pages of pauls writing that i didn't understand and couldn't make head nor tail of.
i also noticed that the borg tended to only quote certain scriptures that they thought they could make sense of pauls writings, and these were quoted over and over again.
but surely the whole bible is supposed to be inspired and benifical ... bla bla bla etc?.

I would love one of JWNs resident biblical scholars to explain Paul a little more, especially since it seems like soooooooo many of the JW "rules" come from his letter to the Corinthians. How is one supposed to read that chapter? I was reading it the other night and was surprised at how many JW laws were in there. I've heard that it was directed to that specific congregation bc they were particularly unruly. Is that true? Can it be proven?

Meeting - service
Field service - going door to door

Etc, etc.
Just trying to learn more about this curious organization...

How big is Bethel in New York?
by Nicolas injust asking out of curiosity... i always heard about it through the wbts publications so i assume what they were saying wasn't exactly like the real thing.
i remember how it was supposed to be a perfect place to work and everything was supposed to be in harmony with each others.
i even dreamed of going to that place, when i was young.

Ditto Nicolas' point - where does the money go? Anyone in seriousness know?

Common JW dating practice?
by JimmyPage inthe other day i was at a drive-thru when i saw a couple of young dubs eating inside by themselves with no chaperone.
they then left in separate vehicles.
it reminded me that when i was dating my jw wife it was her idea to take separate vehicles to avoid arousing suspicions.

In my brief experience, I've met many, many divorced JWs all under THIRTY! To be very honest, I don't know that many divorced couples in my own group of (non-JW) friends. In addition to the numerous divorces I've noted, it also seems that these marriages don't last longer than a year or two.
I've also seen a loophole of getting engaged but then breaking it off. Any of you try that?

My JW mom and sister are attending a birthday party I'm hosting
by Bumble Bee inmy mom knows my position on not being a jw anymore, and we have a pretty good relationship after some rocky patches.
my younger sister is the only one that is still a jw, my older siblings had all left many many years ago, and my younger brother and his family has left now as well.
we have had a few non birithday, birthday parties in the past, no candles on the cake, no singing happy birthday, but just all getting together as a family and having a good time.

Sorry! Reread my post and it didn't seem clear. What I was trying to say is that all the JWs I know, plus their literature says: "you should show love everyday, not just on certain occasions" but I only see them giving each other gifts and having get togethers on wedding anniversaries...
