Maybe you should just make a JW explain the current concept to you in great detail BEFORE April 2010.

Blood Transfusions 101 for JW's
by moshe inblood transfusions 101 for jw's-.
a blood transfusion will not save the life of a starving man = a blood transfusion is not food = a blood transfusion does not violate the ot law given by god to the jews to, "not eat blood" and that was later reiterated by the jewish christians to the gentile christians = the watchtower no-blood transfusion doctrine is a manmade abomination that kills innocent people = the watchtower society is guilty of promoting manslaughter.. .

There's also a scripture - I can't remember where now - that talks about how honorable it is for a man to lay down his soul for a brother. If the blood is the soul, that to be would show support very literally for blood donation.

How do you talk to your kids?
by greenie injust a question that's been bubbling around in my head the last couple of weeks as more new people join the board or others become more established.
for those of you on here that have children, nieces, nephews, grandkids, cousins, friends' kids, etc., how do you talk to them about what the jws teach?
i know there are many here that are in mixed relationships that either started that way or became that way when one left, i know there are those here that have both left, and in any circumstances, i'm just wondering how you talk to your kids about the religion and their beliefs.

Thanks for all the responses. Does anyone else have thoughts? I know there are a lot here with kids of varying ages. Are they just that resilient?

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, JWFacts, this is interesting. So when most (edited: I don't know that MOST people here say that) people on here say JWs believe Jehovah selected the organization in 1914, that's false. Current teaching (according to your post above) says they were chosen in 1919?

Is the Work of Jehovah's Witnesses Propagandistic?
Some opponents of Jehovah's Witnesses have accused them of spreading Zionist propaganda. Others have charged that the ministry of the Witnesses promotes Communism. Still others have claimed that the work of Jehovah's Witnesses promotes the ideals and interests of "American imperialism." And there are those who assert that the Witnesses are anarchists, fomenting disorder with the aim of changing the social, economic, political, or legal order. Obviously, these conflicting accusations cannot all be true.
The simple fact is that Jehovah's Witnesses are none of the above. The work of the Witnesses is carried out in faithful obedience to Jesus Christ's mandate to his disciples: "You will be witnesses of me . . . to the most distant part of the earth." (Acts 1:8) Their work focuses solely and exclusively on the good news of the heavenly Kingdom—God's instrument for bringing peace to the whole earth.—Matthew 6:10; 24:14.
Observers of Jehovah's Witnesses have found no evidence that this Christian community has ever been a force disruptive of the good order of any land.
Many journalists, judges, and others have commented on the positive contributions that Jehovah's Witnesses have made to the communities in which they live. Consider some examples. After attending a convention of Jehovah's Witnesses, a reporter from southern Europe commented: "These are people with strong family ties, they are taught to love and to live by their conscience so as not to harm others."
Another journalist, formerly negative about the Witnesses, stated: "They live an exemplary life. They do not violate the standards of what is moral and right." A political scientist similarly remarked about the Witnesses: "They behave toward other people with profound kindness, love and gentleness."
Jehovah's Witnesses teach the rightness of submission to authority. As law-abiding citizens, they follow Bible standards of honesty, truthfulness, and cleanliness. They build good morals into their own families, and they help others to learn how they can do the same. They live peaceably with all men, not getting involved in disruptive demonstrations or political revolutions. Jehovah's Witnesses seek to be exemplary in obeying the laws of the human superior authorities, while they wait patiently on the Supreme Authority, the Sovereign Lord Jehovah, to restore perfect peace and righteous government to this earth.
At the same time, the work of the Witnesses is educational. Using the Bible as a basis, they teach people worldwide to reason on Bible principles and thereby develop right standards of conduct and moral integrity. They promote values that improve family life and help young people cope with their peculiar challenges. They also help people to find the strength to overcome bad habits and to develop the ability to get along with others. Such a work would hardly be termed "propaganda." As The World Book Encyclopedia says, in a climate where ideas circulate freely, "propaganda differs from education."

Panic attacks + "You had another nightmare last night": Part 2
by sd-7 inever since i got married and had to return to cult activities to keep peace in my home, i've been having panic attacks.
i think i'm having panic attacks.
... anyone else go through panic attacks?
-
greenie
I get really tense around it too. It's like you subconsciously put yourself on guard so that you can't be manipulated. If you haven't yet, I would seriously consider getting some counseling to help with the panic attacks. Doing regular physical activity that actually raises your heartrate to around 130 will also help to raise your threshhold for panicky feelings.

Minimus, can you explain this more, I'm interested in this story. You said: "I ask these questions because the Watchtower says something that doesn't seem to make biblical sense."

by saywhat29 inokay so i try to explain this to 'wordly' people and they just blink but i still do not get this christmas stuff.
at work i have managers and coworkers who got me gifts and i'm trying to think if i should get them gifts as well.

My thoughts:
1. It is truly, truly the thought that counts when it comes to git-giving, so if that tie on sale is the perfect thing for the person who got you the nice watch, then the tie is what you should get them. Also, since you should always remove the price part of the tag on gifts you give, how are they to know it was on sale?
2. You are not required to get everyone who gave you a gift one in return. If you want to, though, you can, OR you can put them on your shopping list for the next year, or just do something nice for them during the year, i.e. "I wanted to buy you lunch/ a cup of coffee, etc. since you were so thoughtful toward me at Christmas." I agree with those that have said people expecting gifts in return don't have the right mindset about this Christmas thing. If you want something easy, since they're work friends, buy them all nice coffee mugs and a $5 gift card to Starbucks. Easy peasy. Oh, or buy them a funny ornament. Place like Walmart and Target have TONS and some are really funny. Whatever you decide, your gifts don't have to be of equal or greater value, they can just be thoughtful.
3. On the tree discussion, you don't HAVE to cut down a tree at all. I can remember years we were too strapped to buy a tree and my dad just decorated a little, potted norfolk pine. Perfect! And sustainable! BUT, Christmas trees do smell nice!
4. Oh, and on the wrapping quandry: I can't wrap to save my life, which makes wrapping even more fun for me. I seriously crack myself up with the various folds and tape placement I use on my gifts. And you can always use gift bags. OH, and lot of places offer gift wrapping for you. Like Barnes & Noble or Macys. Just get them to do it.
