I'm glad the surgery went well. So, you went to a JWD apostate birthday party after your wife went to the DC while you were in surgery? That sounds like payback time to me (hee hee)! I hope you had a really uplifting time at the party!

Told my Parents about me joining the Military.
by lucky1rish inso, i'm back, and many of you wanted me to post the unfolding drama that is my life at the moment.. last week i came out and told my father that i was in the navy, and was going to be trying out for aviation search air rescue.
it's an extensive rate, and one that has a 40% failure rate among those who qualify.
so needless to say, i do nothing but run and swim.. anyways, the reaction was what i expected.

Did you ask your mother exactly who is "giving up their family" here?
Thank you for your service, seaman lucky1rish. Because of the Watchtower attidudes you must deal with, you must sacrifice more than many others to offer it.

Jehovah's Witnesses with OBVIOUS drinking problems?
by lovelylil inhi guys, been a while since i've posted.
summer is very busy at my job, lots of ot, which is good because winter is slow and i barely get my f/t hours.
anyway, i had to post this to see if anyone has seen a similiar situation in their congregation.. i drive a lot for work, do home visits for a local visiting nurse association.

I suspect there's a common cause. Both alcohol and high-control groups can fill the same emotional holes; they are two different ways to cover up the pain. I'm not saying that this is always the case, or mostly the case--only that a significant number of people do need something to lean on, and either booze or the Watchtower can be that crutch.
Handle them with mercy: "There, but for the grace of God, go I!"

How long do JWs visit before giving up?
by skeeter1 init's like, how many people does it take to screw in a lightbulb...... so, i dropped by someone's house last weekend this person was raised in the watchtower cult, and has been around it for several decades.
nice person, but not active in the meetings, never in service, and never baptised, etc.
rarely goes to the meetings - perhaps once every 2 months.

If they have even a glimmer of hope, they will keep coming by. You must be the broken record: "I'm not interested"..."Thank you, but I'm not interested"..."Please don't bother, because I'm not interested". Most Witnesses, not all, have enough sense that they eventually get the message. But one little slip, giving a little ray of hope by talking, debating with them, or taking a magazine, and it's as if you offered a permanent invitation for return visits. Unless that's what you want, never engage with them--and that's the problem your friend has: having been involved, and because he goes to an occassional meeting, he's near the top of the prospect list, and it takes persistence to get off of it (barring a juicy JC, which doesn't seem likely in this case).

On A Scale Of 1 to 10 How Much Knowledge Does A Jehovah's Witness Have About Their Religion?
by minimus inyears (many decades) ago, most jws knew what their religion taught.
they could go toe to toe with a minister or priest and make some good points.. i believe today's witness knows little about most of the convoluted teachings and revisions of the "truth".
yesteryear's witnesses got a 9/10.

I think that, like their knowledge of the Bible, the average Witness knows a few things by heart--and forgets about the rest (if they ever heard about it in the first place). But that part they do know, man, they won't ever stop telling you about it! Being extremely vocal can create the illusion that you actually have much to say.
So I give the average Witness a 3.

The question I ask is why are you considering going back, what do you expect to happen if you do?
If you expect joining the Watchtower (or any other religion) to be the elixir that solves life's problems, I think you'll be disappointed later on. After the initial enchantment with the new experience wears off, it needs to continue working on a day to day, long term basis.
On the other hand, opting for a religious affiliation because it fits you is like marriage to a spouse who is complementary to you, and you to them. It strengthens and enhances the persons you already are, just as you do for them. It's about each party actively benefitting the other, not mere hope that being with them will do something for you.
So, before you make that committment, examine the situation carefully:
- What do you expect to happen if you return to the Watchtower?
- Is it reasonable to expect from them?
- Are you ready to make the committments they expect from you?
- Do you really expect to stay commited to your decision for another 10, 20, or 50 years?
Honest reflection on these questions will lead you to the choice that's best for you. Please choose wisely.
Like the majority of posters on this thread, my choice is not the Watchtower organization.

Has a very poorly dog.........
by watersprout inbit of background info..... we have a neighbour who is a complete psychopath, she has tried to get us evicted, turned neighbours against us, bad mouthed us to our visitors.. last year our dog who is a jack/staff and is very healthy started to go downhill.... lethergy, depression, vomiting bile, coughing.
we took her to the vets who ran loads of tests on organ failure, cancer etc and they all came back clear.
he repeatedly asked us if she could have eaten anything.

Do listen to Shelby: until you have some real evidence, all you have are suspicions (reasonable ones, but still just suspicions). Until you collect something suspicious in the yard, suspicion is all it is. Even if you do find something, was it the neighbor or somebody else who put it there? I'm thinking a motion-activated wildlife camera (discretely hidden) would help. Or a very obvious security camera (even a realistic fake camera can be a deterrent).
Don't overlook the grass, especially if you (or the lawn service) use fertilizers or garden chemicals--even "natural" or "organic" kinds. What's safe to walk on and sit on may not be safe for the dog to eat.

Why Won't They Carbon Date This?
by Perry in"for the first time in human history a dinosaur fossil is presenting us with the opportunity to see what a living dinosaur looked like.
in 2001 a field research team unearthed the worlds most complete dinosaur fossil, a brachylophosaurus nicknamed leonardo.
this incredible dinosaur has all of its skin covering its body, missing only a bit on the head and tail.

Carbon-14 dating is useful only back 60,000 years or so. With a half-life of 5730 years, less than 0.1% of the original C 14 concentration remains after about 600 centuries (more than ten half-lives). At that point, the remaining concentration is comparable to the measurement error--so dating of older organic matter is not accurate.
That's why they don't bother to try carbon dating of fossil dinosaur tissue: it won't tell you anything!
