  12 STEP PROGRAM and HIGHER POWER

  i know there's been topics previously but how in the world do athiests do the program when they don't use as their support the higher power heard they can use the group, the ocean, etc., but seriously!

  my friend told me they recommend god as the higher power for the program to work in some literature.

  LV101: Some atheists will outright not acknowledge a higher power, and are therefore unable to follow the steps. That being said, atheist is a very broad category as far as belief systems go. Personally, I view the Universe as a higher power, albeit a vast, impartial, and unliving one... but that's what I would use, or attempt to use as the case may be. Of course, that might not be the best one, because the Universe doesn't really care what I do.

  I don't have any formatting tools; it looks like it's defaulting to html, which lets me do things like this and this, which wouldn't work with the normal window with the formatting tools.

  bytheirworks: Religion is in many cases for-profit industry. It's quite disgusting, really. And "taxing the first amendment" isn't a fair representation of what Gopher said.

  Latest Awake Cover Story - Is Pornography Toxic

  saw two separate kiosk setups today that had the awake displayed with the cover story being "pornography, is it toxic or .

  (the other word i can't remember).. i was in a hurry today so really didn't have time to stop and talk and ask the brother exactly how much research did the society do for this article, to which he would probably say true chrtistians don't watch porn, to which i would've asked then since you jws claim you don't lie then someone must've watched some porn films so they know what they're talking about and have their facts straight, or is the article just speculation..

  QC: A couple of things....

  First, in regards to abiogenisis. There are two distinct types of abiogenisis, one of which is discredited, and the other of which is [at least currently] a legitimate field of study. See http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Abiogenesis . I'm surprised no one mentioned the first, because that's the first thing I thought when I read that definition. Also, dictionary.com is a very, very weak source for a scientific discussion... just saying.

  As far as the way the Earth seems designed to support life: that is completely irrelevant. The Earth will seemingly designed to support life whether we evolved or were created. If it weren't compatible with life, we wouldn't have evolved on it, or God wouldn't have put us here, respectively.

  Finally, in regards to your thesis about the Cambrian explosion being evidence against evolution: So what if it is? If complex life suddenly appeared at the Cambrian explosion, it would not invalidate the large amount of evidence for evolution that has occurred since then. It would be a mystery that we would have to explain, and it would be quite possible that the answer was "and God/some aliens/something dropped off a bunch of animals that then evolved into us". Science has to take into account all of the evidence around us, and a new theory would have to be made which would take into account both the myriad transitional fossils that happened later in addition to the sudden appearance in the Cambrian. As it is, though, it looks like you got your ass handed to you already as far as your argument for that is concerned.
