  in another thread the question of whether or not the wt$ would "outright lie" was raised.. i happen to believe that they would in a heartbeat, although i agree that their preference is for sneaky misleading statements as opposed to outright lies.

  regardless, here's a short list of some of what i consider incontrovertible evidence that yes, the wt$ would outright lie.. .

  consider the following statements printed in the wt magazine:.

  Yep. Blatant lie.

  Forty years prior to 1922 was 1882. At that time (and right up until 1914/15, which proved their prophecy false) the WT$ claimed that 1914 would mark the END of the time of trouble, not the BEGINNING:

  "We see no reason for changing the figures – nor could we change them if we would. They are, we believe, God’s dates, not ours. But bear in mind that the end of 1914 is not the date for the beginning, but for the end of the time of trouble." (WT Reprints, 7/15,1894, p.1672)

  PSac: Great point. Not only is the statement in the WT magazine a blatant lie (since Jesus never commanded anyone to preach from house to house), but Jesus actually said the opposite!

  WT$ said: Jesus commanded us "to preach the Kingdom good news from house to house."

  Jesus said: "Do not keep moving from house to house" (NASB)

  I started the thread with the quote from the 6/15/54 WT, but it's worth seeing again.

  You also quoted the 6/15/65 WT. Good one! How could they have been "anxiously awaiting his second presence" WHEN THEY BELIEVED THAT HE HAD ALREADY RETURNED?! This is one of the most blatant lies I've seen from the WT$.

  I'd actually never picked up on the lie in the Greatest Man book: "in 1914...Jesus returned invisibly...with only his faithful servants being aware of his return." In 1914, his supposed "faithful servants" were telling anyone who would listen that Jesus had already returned 40 years previous....

  Reminds me of the Society's Revelation book wherein every single verse in revelation is said to somehow predict some aspect of the modern day JW religion.

  AnnOMaly: That's a good example of how inconsistent WT$ doctrine is. On one hand their convention in 1919 was world-wide notification that Jesus had (supposedly) returned and selected the WT$; on the other hand they didn't even discern that Jesus had (supposedly) returned at that time...

  yes, what was the biggest lie that you can think of, that persuaded you to realize that they were not who they said they were ?.

  for myself it would have to be the year they picked as the destruction of ancient jerusalem 607 bc.. i have an assumption this was done purposely to coincide correctly with making 1914 an a important pivotal date.

  in human history, which by all factual evidence it was not.. unassuming and deceiving manipulation for self marketing purposes.

  My gut reaction is to say it's their claim that they represent God, that they are the only true religion, that "Jehovah" is pleased with them, uses them, communicates through them, they're the "faithful and discreet slave", etc.

  However all these claims are dependent on the 607->1914 lie, so maybe that is the biggest of them all...

  keyser soze: I agree. And I personally think the WT$ does not believe much of what they print doctrinally: 607, 1914, 1918/19, 144K, blood ban.......
