So, I watched "The Founder" today, and had a minor Revelation
by Captain Schmideo2 inin the movie's story, ray kroc, the man who is in charge of franchising mcdonalds restaurants, is finding himself in a situation where he is doing gangbusters at creating the stores, but is going broke on his contract.
he gets help from another fast food executive who examines his books.one aspect of the business jumps out.
the stores need land to operate on, and that money is going to the land-owners who lease the land to the stores.

Query: How to Generate a Shaded Background for Quoted Excerpts
by steve2 ini've been wondering for some time how to generate a shaded background to show excerpts i quote from other posters.
it's not obvious to me from an inspection of the different tabs which one governs background shading to show quotes.. can anyone help?
thanks.. kind regards, steve2 .

I have to shade my quotes once I've completed my post as clicking the paragraph symbol doesn't take it back to regular " unshaded" writing. Hence I do it at the end (if the quotes at the beginning) or my whole post is shaded.

Questions JWs Ask: Mike from Greece wants to know...
by Funchback inmike from greece is a member of a pro-jw forum (message board).. the jw religion has so many rules so mike wants to clarify some correct procedures.. what woud you like to know, mike?.
a couple of questions dear brothers & sisters of the forum about women's head coverings1)should it be considered wrong for a sister to wear a head covering during the meetings?
i have seen some old sisters, one in our congregation and a couple in other two that like wearing head coverings during the meetings.
-

Old sisters have never worn head coverings in meetings. Mike from GREECE needs to get to know his own culture a bit more since the old dears behaviour is a hang over from their
BabylonishOrthodox upbringing where women traditionAlly wear hats or headscarfs to CHURCH. -

2.16.2017 NJ Star-Ledger Ad: "Were you sexually abused by the Jehovahs Witnesses?"
by breakfast of champions inmy wife found this 1/4 page ad on page 2 of yesterday's nj star-ledger, probably the biggest newspaper in nj.
pretty telling.. .

Richard O. Breakfast O.C.I had no idea that such a memo was sent out.
Whilst we all know contact with law enforcement has always been discouraged amongst JW's for victims of crimes committed by others within the org, including child sexual abuse, I wasn't aware of an *official written* admonition positively not do so *on pain of punishment*.
With the further instructions given with that order, this would explain why the authorities are convinced of the existence of a very extensive database
From what I have read on this site it seems certain Ted Jaracz was almost certainly the "behind the scenes" instigator of this abominable order.
Given their extensive powers and skill, with the co-operation that various national law enforcement teams maintain with each other it would Not surprise me if they have uncovered the real reason for Jaracz peremptory return to the States from Australian Bethel. Perhaps also any shady connections he maintained there.
I am no conspiracy theorist but the whole Watchtower involvement with paedophilia , in my opinion at least, gets darker by the day.😞

Watchtower let off the hook by the UK charities commission
by jambon1 insay what they like, but it's a definite withdrawal of pressure.
the commission is slow, needlessly protracted and inconsiderate of the extent to which ongoing damage is being carried out.. scrap it.

I think the Charity Commision, far from withdrawing pressure, just wants to get on with the damn job it's been mandated to do and get the WT to quit these protracted and ( costly to the tax payer) legal proceedings it's so bloody fond of. I just hope the Commission has got what it needs to do a thorough investigation

Latest News on Charity Commission Investigation into WTBTS
by gonzobear inthis has just been published on the government's website regarding the charity commission's investigation into wtbts in the uk.
it sounds a little like a backward step, and also like the society are playing clever legal games - as to be expected - but hopefully the information provided by people who've left and been affected by the society will help them reach an informed conclusion.
.

Sounds like The Commission have all t he information they required - let's hope so anyway, and the Watchtower isn't using its infamous theocratic warfare ( aka lying)to deal underhandedly about the information they have available.

Sisters as Ministerial Servants?
by Spoletta inmy wife has been trying to convince me that the organization is hinting at the possibility of making some older sisters ministerial servants.
she is awake to a lot of the false doctrines, but is still clinging to the hope that the org may become more progressive in the future.
anyone else pick up on this?

Richard O.there's no question of the ARC forcing Watchtower to appoint women, but only allowing victims of child ( or presumably any) sexual abuse to be allowed detail their sufferings to a women, rarther than a body of older men.
In fact the Catholic Church, the other Institution investigated, has fully agreed to all recommendations and made unreserved apology to all victims ( by the Pope, whereas Toni Morris is too above such things).

Young People Ask... When Can I Start Dating?
by pale.emperor inquite possibly the most annoying and patronizing thing i've read in years.
comments of mine are in yellow.. .
she doesn't trust herself to make her own decisions and she's going to wait years even after she thinks she's ready.

Carla Are you dating? â–¡ Yes â–¡ No-----Yes, the elders wife or other women in the cong regularly text me about complete nonsense.
LoL this made me laugh! How true
So did this!!
Pale.emperor I'm gonna take a wild guess here imagine the picture was young people sitting in a spartan living room with glasses or orange juice while one of the boys in an orange polo tshirt and chinos plays guitar for the others who are singing kingdom songs right out of the book. LoL!

Thoughts on African Americans and Slavery
by Simon inlet's start by saying that slavery is of course a terrible thing, one of the worst crimes imaginable, and that "slavery" rarely implies good treatment, anything noble or defensible.
nowadays, even god doesn't escape judgement from our enlightened views with passages about slavery in the bible usually glossed over because they are shameful.. but not all slavery was equal.. because of the media, movie industry, racial tensions in the us regularly shown on the news and our taught history, i think most people's knowledge and idea of slavery is that of the north atlantic slave trade where white people took africans to work in cotton fields.
this idea is probably also re-enforced because the largest group of descendents of slaves we see today are african americans (usually in the us or places they subsequently migrated to).. but it's incomplete.. it's only when you look into it more that you discover that there was much more to the slave trade than that, otherwise it would have been just called "the slave trade" and not "the north atlantic slave trade".. some 12.5 million slaves were taken from africa to the us with just under 11 million surviving the trip so it obviously took a terrible toll immediately, even before any maltreatment once they landed in the americas where conditions and treatment were truly awful.

. It actually persisted in many countries and was only finally stopped in some as late as the 1970's (!)
I remember as a youngster being horrified that, not so long ago, there was slavery still legal in, I think, was it Mauratania? I think so.
Mind you, here in Brixton we have the headquarters building for the Anti-Slavery Society, because, sadly it is still happening.
