While it is not a popular opinion here, becoming a JW is a voluntary association.

The point was made in court that a large number of Jehovah’s witnesses are baptised while still minors. They are pressurising kids of 7 and 8 to do so currently. So no, it is not voluntary in many, if not most, cases.

I believe that an appeal will overturn the current verdict on the basis of freedom of association rights.

VANDER the case centres on hate speech. Shunning comes into play because they used examples of it to prove that watchtowers hate speech toward those of others faiths or beliefs has damaging, even violent, results, namely cruelty and shunning. It’s not not shunning they are legislating against. Not freedom of association.

To respond to your statement they may play it smart and not appeal. As others have said if it goes all the way to Strasbourg and the ECHR, the rest of the world will sit up and take notice and any ruling would be seen as persuasive or strong precedent in other States.

I would have thought you of all people would see that prejudice against a person because of their faith/beliefs/lack thereof, is wrong.

would not like my choice of associates to be regulated by law. Is disfellowshipping painful? I see that it is. Do I want to be forced to speak to a disfellowshiped pedophile because a judge says I must? No. Not now. Not ever. One's choice of associates, no matter what drives it, should be beyond a judge's purview.

VIENNE Firstly, they have not been prosecuted shunning specifically, but rather for hate speech and discrimination. The result of which is egregious in the extreme and does indeed involve shunning. The Ghent public prosecutor’s office summoned the Jehovah’s Witnesses for four charges: incitement to discrimination on the basis of religious belief against a person, and against a group, as well as incitement to hatred or violence against a person, and against a group.

If you have ever read the sort of rhetoric watchtower uses when describing apostates, you will absolutely understand why.

It is absolutely not about being made to associate with someone, but rather about an organisation forcing its members NOT to associate with loved ones who have changed their beliefs.

Yes. Human artefacts going back many thousands of years, for one. Such as the kind of “Venus” found at Hohle fels caves and the “lion man” of Swabia, Germany, nearly 40,000 years old both. We also have bone flutes of a similar age and skull beads found in Israel over 100,000 years old.

watchtower claims dating methods are off but their information around that is extremely dated to say the least. A rudimentary check will flood a truly interested party with information on how long man has existed. Trouble is most witnesses are not truly interested.

i just watched the oprah interview.

i know that many view them with little interest as just entitled wastes of space and i get that.. however, the description of how they were "trapped" and silenced and forced into perpetuating the system with little or no personal freedom rang bells for me.

they are effectively shunned, estranged and disparaged by their family and cut off from support.

I will say one thing. Harry keeps banging on about safety...just wanting money for safety.

I actually think Harry has a screw loose because surely by now he knows how royal protection works!!

Abroad, royal protection officers don't have the right to carry guns automatically as no foreigner does. Even if they did, they wouldn't be privy to a states security intelligence which means their charges are not safe, since they could be blindsided by that lack of intelligence at any time.

So what happens is if the queen etc travels abroad there is a reciprocal and the country she visits organizes safety. It would cost our government millions to protect the Sussex's yearly, until they day they ALL die. Why would we do it if they don't work for us.

how the residents feel about receiving a letter from a jw children..

In this Edinburgh times article watchtower says adult's sending letters, together with youngsters drawings, to old age care homes lifts the spirits of recipients and teaches kids to do good to others.

If it were just that then yes, I'm all for it. But it isn't!! It's about making converts and in particular getting elderly converts to change their wills.

Why don't these witness kids write to the very many lonely, elderly Witnesses in care homes??Because they can't count time, that's why!

we were told we were part of the world if we got involved in politics.

if we had employment that had political involvement we were instructed to get another job.

we were told we might be considered disassociated if we voted and then it became questionable.

It's horrific that one man's narcissism and resentments toward his own government at a particular period in time should affect the choices and responsibilities of so many people at different times and in different eras (I'm thinking Malawi is a particularly egregious example).

Unfortunately the outcome of their neutrality during WW2 compounded this veiw - though we now know it was pure chance they ended up on the right side of history (see Rutherford's "Statement of Facts").
