I have debated 100s of JWs in person over the last 33 years. I have gone to them (KH, street corners, conventions, etc.) and they have come to my door. They even called me 'Bible Bill' because I used the Bible without materials and they were not able to respond to the issues I raised, but said they would look into their literature, but never get back to me.

How many gods are there?
by jgnat inchristianity was birthed in a polytheistic world, inheriting from jewish roots the concept of one g-d. now, instead of one god for israel, we are offered one god for the whole world.
caesar (mortal men) was declared a god.
gods had powers beyond ordinary men, could grant requests, and demanded sacrifice and worship.

Good and evil are not two equal, opposite forces. God and good are far greater than evil and bad. yin is eastern false philosophy suitable for sci-fi Star Wars, not a credible world view.
jgnat, there is some wisdom in your comments. Thx.

Yes, I don't think they would read the whole Bible or ever come back. As well, Jesus and others opened the Scriptures, reasoned from them, etc. with the person. Those who know how to interpret in context can facilitate others discovering the truth. As well, if we should the fallacies and misquotes of scholars, etc. of the WT (info they would not have access to), it will help open their understanding.

here's the definition of 'god' straight from the insight book:.

Heb. 1:6 is a quote from Deut. LXX about YHWH. It is clearly worship, not obeisance. It is applied to Jesus, impossible if WT is right. The Gospels, Revelation, etc. also demonstrate worship to Jesus and tell us to honor the Son even as/exact same way as we honor the Father. Many verses and principles demonstrate this, so knowsnothing is just not aware of the weight of evidence.
Putting Jesus in His place: The case for the Deity of Christ (click look inside for contents; this research makes WT writing/arguments look like kindergarten)

Evangelism is persuasive, but does not have to be rude. Those outside of Christ are lost in need of the gospel. This is explicit in Christ's teaching and in Scripture. Are you saying we should not preach the gospel to anyone and assume all godless people are actually saved?
The Bible is inconsistent with good science and reason.
The problem is not with the Bible, but with bad interpretation/application. Evangelicals are not immune to this, but do much better than the cults do. There is not a problem with obeying Scripture, but there is a problem in obeying a twisting of it.
I believe in the imminent return of Christ, the blessed hope of the Church. We will not be here for Armageddon. I live each day as if it will be my last, but also as if I will be here for a full life (so plan in wisdom and attempt to be fruitful). An abuse of this doctrine does not negate the truth or benefit of it. Your beef is with Paul and should not be with flakes who distort Pauline thought.
It is fight evil and promote good, not either/or.
God has revealed Himself in Christ. It is hard to trust an invisible, unknown God, so He has given us evidence, reasons to believe. Without evidence, we would likely believe lies, falsehoods, deception, etc. Faith does not mean exhaustive evidence, but without fact it is mere presumption and likely error.
Evangelicals have good and bad and a variety of beliefs and practices. Jesus and Paul were dogmatic about core truth without compromise. Being dogmatic about debatable, peripheral, less clear issues is a valid concern.
If one denies the Deity and resurrection of Christ, salvation by grace through faith alone in Christ, the Bible as the Word of God, etc., they probably should not use the evangelical title. A low view of Scripture would not make one a pillar in an evangelical church, just as adherent.

Good insights, wontleave. I find it hard to believe that most JWs have not read the Bible cover to cover. However, the same can be said of some Christians as well (but we don't have a bunch of organizational literature to fall back on). It is interesting how similar WT and Vatican is. JWs certainly are not Bible scholars nor is the GB. They have simplistic vs scholarly answers. Mormons are even more bizarre in belief, but they actually have a well-developed, up-to-date apologetic for their LDS beliefs. The WT quote that people will revert back to Christendom's teaching if they stop reading WT literature and just read the Bible is most telling and profound. Oh the depth of spiritual blindness and deception for those who trust man over God.

Talk about cultic. How on earth are people so gullible to think the God of grace and mercy would cut off eternal life by fallible men and committees with no biblical basis?! The most minor offenses that are not even biblical issues can get you kicked out of the kingdom. What a tyrant god and organization that reeks of control and manipulation. This works based cult knows nothing of the gospel, grace, God, faith.

In fairness, I think the WT rejection of the trinity (Satanic, pagan, Catholic, blah blah) is the real reason they refuse to see Christ as God worthy of worship. This may be held in sincerity (though they have countless evidence that they should know better) to exalt Jehovah alone, but they are wrong in their assumption. It is true that those who follow the real Jesus, including worshipping Him, will renounce the false JW cult and be set free. One cannot remain in the organization with loyalty and live for God in Christ. So, the WT will certainly try to keep people from being part of 'Christendom' or keep them from accessing non-filtered information. It is possible that some are power and money hungry and know better, but do not have the fortitude that Raymond Franz had. It is hard not to hate the WT. When I see the changed lives of those who have found Christ after leaving WT, it also makes it hard to not love the victims who are a prayer away from truth and freedom.

Jesus was worshipped in the Gospels and Revelation 4-5 (equally with the Father). Heb. 1:6 has YHWH commanding all God's angels to worship Jesus. Created beings are never worshipped (forbidden in Rev. John/angels). Jesus is not created, but uncreated Creator, worthy of worship.
A stone idol can be worshipped as a false god, but this would be condemned idolatry. Either Jesus is true God worthy of worship or He is mere creature not worthy of worship. There is no escaping trinitarian implications if He is Deity/worshipped (He also has the names, attributes, titles, works, etc. of God). There is one true God and many false or so-called gods, not God by nature (Gal. 4:8; I Cor. 8:4-6). Compromised talk of divine, god-like, etc. blurs the distinction between Almighty God and things that are not God. Only God can and should be worshipped. WT waters down the meaning by substituting 'obeisance' in English when the same Greek word is used of worship of Jehovah.
