My ex works full time and my daughters told her not to worry about the house to focus on work. My ex doesn't make a lot of money and missing work woudl be another financial blow in addition to everything else. My ex burst into tears when she visited the house and my daughters told her not to worry about the house and they would take care of it. None of us blame her for not being able to go to the house. I know I would be a basket case. I saw pictures and I cried and cried.

My children's house burned, how "worldly" people are responding...
by HappyGuy ini have three daughters, aged 26, 20, and 17. the house they live in (with their mother, my ex wife) is a house that i bought for them, i paid off the mortgage and deeded the house to my ex wife and told her that i wanted the children to have a home that they would not have to worry about losing.
that was 14 years ago.
i did not want my ex to suffer due to the divorce so i gave her that house free and clear.

So far the Witnesses have done NOTHING. None have showed up at the house, none have called, NOTHING. My ex mother in law, who lives in the house also is a 3rd or 4th generation JW. Her family were some of the first JWs back in the 1920s. I'm trying to remember who that was, her grandmother maybe? or great grandmother? I forget.
The ex mother in law and the ex wife are always trying to preach to my children because my children used to be JWs but they left the cult several years ago. My children all said that this clear contrast of what the "worldly" people are doing speaks volumes.

That was 14 years ago. I did not want my ex to suffer due to the divorce so I gave her that house free and clear. My ex is a life long JW.
The house caught fire last Wednesday and the fire department had a terrible time getting the fire out, so they busted the place up pretty good. Between the fire and the fire department's demolition derby the house is in very bad shape. My ex did not have homeowner's insurance. Don't ask, it just makes me very angry.
Now, here is what those evil "worldly" people have done in response.
The Red Cross put my children and their mother up in a hotel room.
The high school where my youngest daughter goes to school gave her entire class permission to come to the house to help clean up debris. Her classmates all said they were going to go whether they had permission or not :).
The church that my oldest daughter goes to sent their youth ministry, 26 teenagers, to help clean up debris and help with demolition.
My middle daughter's boyfriend has taken off work and is working pretty much fulltime on the house. He brought a couple of his friends with him who also took off from work.
Home depot has donated a small amount of material and is trying to raise enough money to donate ALL the materials needed to completely renovate the house. We don't know yet if this is going to happen but they assigned a fire remediation counselor to my children and he is helping them talk to all sorts of agencies, groups, charities, etc, to get different types of help. He worked with the city so that they could get the house stabilized without needing a building permit. The roof was in danger of collapsing.
There has been a steady stream of volunteers from all over the place coming to help.
A contractor we found on Craig's list is at the house every day helping get the house to the point where it can be lived in so that Home Depot has time to assemble the help they are working on assembling. He is not doing this for free but he gave us such a low rate after he found out the situation that it might as well be free. The man is an expert in everything construction related, I hate to think what a real hourly rate for him would be.
EVERYONE who comes to the house is amazed at what my daughters are accomplishing (they are running the project themselves and doing a lot of the work) because of this outpouring of support. THe guy from Home Depot said he was totally amazed at what they got done over this past weekend.
I have been on the phone round the clock (I live 3 states away) organizing tools, equipment, people and other things that have to be paid for from my house in Mississippi (my kids are in Florida). I can't be there personally but I am helping run the project from here (I had to take off from work to do this). My resources are limited but my middle daughter's boyfriend and the contractor from craigslist are the most tight fisted people I have ever met so they are able to get things for a very reasonable amount of money and get a lot done with it. I cannot be there in person for several reasons, but I am working full time on this.
Everyone who hears about my chidlren's plight wants to help somehow and does to what degree they can.
I am hoping that my chlidren will get their house back. They have been working on it round the clock since the fire. I am very proud of them.

My experience
by spawn inthought i'd better say hi!
to say i was once a "worldly person" would be an understatement.
i consider myself to be a man who has "been there and done that" and enjoyed all the pleasures of the world.

Hello spawn and LittleSister,
I came to these same conclusions after 22 years. I am glad that you shared your experience and that you will be building your family in the real world.
I especially liked your comment that when worldly you had a close circle of friends who would do anything for each other and in the cult you did not have that.
Welcome.

Christian group helps starving Hatians by sending them Solar Powered e-Bibles
by Elsewhere inhttp://www.news.com.au/breaking-news/earthquake-survivors-get-solar-powered-bibles/story-e6frfku0-1225821184929.
earthquake survivors get solar-powered bibles .
as international aid agencies rush food, water and medicine to haiti's earthquake victims, a us faith-based group is sending bibles to haitians in their hour of need.. not just any bible.. these are solar-powered audible bibles that can broadcast the holy scriptures in haitian creole to 300 people at a time.. called the "proclaimer," the audio bible delivers "digital quality" and is designed for "poor and illiterate people", the faith comes by hearing group said.. according to their website, the proclaimer is "self-powered and can play the bible in the jungle, desert or ... even on the moon!".

Well received? You aren't serious. How about sending a solar powered water distiller. Now that might be well received.
This is the sickest thing I ever heard of.

A Demon Experience?......This was/is very serious to me.
by awildflower inso when we moved here from maine to okc, six years ago this coming april, my daughter was 7. the military moved us so it brings a big moving truck to your house and unloads all of your stuff etc.
we had been settling in for a few months and my daughter starting telling me that she was hearing things in her room.
small things at first, just enough to prick up her ears.

awildflower,
I lived with aboriginal tribes for several years after I left the Witnesses. I also got very involved in magic (not the rabbit out of the hat stuff, real magic). I have seen things from the supernatural world that I know are real. There are malevolent spirit beings. No one knows what they really are, I do not think they are the demons of the Bible. I also do not think that they are former humans (ghosts). What I do know about them is that anyone who ever comes into contact with them is TERRIFIED OUT OF THEIR MIND and their is no doubt in their mind what happened. Having said that, they won't bother you if you don't go looking for them. Contacting them takes being very involved with extreme magical practices or being very involved with someone who is a practicer of magic. These malevolent spirit creatures don't just randomly come mess with people, there has to be a reason and someone very powerful has to be directly involved. They don't transfer their "spirits" to objects, so you can't just lay something around and "infect" someone else with it.
I don't know what happened to your child. I do know that it was not "demons".
When I was a teenager (and a JW) I had several experience that I believed to be "demons". Now I know that they were not, now I think that I was in that half awake, half dreamtime state where the mind hallucinates. Also, the JW cult pushes belief in demons so hard that I think my mind was playing tricks on me. I'm not saying that is what is happening in your child's case. I'm just saying that belief can have manifestation (which is not real) if believed strongly enough.
Anyway, I think the energy comments might be closer to the truth. But, I wouldn't worry about "demons" the malevolent spirit creatures don't work that way. Unless you lately joined the Santeria cult, or became enemies of a high priestess of Kali. No, I thought not.

WTBS taking care of older ones?
by roadrunner027 indoes anyone know if the society/organization is financially taking care of the older ones?.
my husband and i left the org over 10 years ago, we are of the generation where our parents came to the jw's in the 70's, gave up everything they owned, had no college education, and stuck to the usual janitorial/construction jobs so they wouldn't miss any meetings.
this of coarse means they have no retirement money and see nothing wrong with that as the end of the system is soon upon us.

I was a very zealous JW for 22 years. I was never an elder (never felt the "calling" and hated the bureaucracy) but I was usually thought pretty well of and was influential to a degree. One of the reasons that I left the JW cult was over charitable works, I mean the complete lack of charitable works. I pushed for help for elderly JWs for various reasons several times. By pushed I mean I went to the city overseer the CO, the DO, called Headquarters, went to the quickbuild committee. I asked for various things like special donations being asked for, outright assistance, the quickbuild committee putting on a special project to help elderly people who lost their home, etc.
The answer was always the same. "We are not a social welfare agency". "Our charitable works are the door to door ministry and nothing else can interfere with that".
The friction between me and the society got so bad that I was told to stop pushing for help for people on the threat of being disfellowshipped for being insubordinate.
So, no the WTBTS will not help anyone.

Why Christains make no sense to me, an example from Haiti...
by HappyGuy ini have some in laws who recently went to haiti to do "missionary" work at one of the churches there.
this "missionary" work basically consisted of singing and dancing and entertaining the church goers.
my relatives stayed at some houses owned by the church on the church property.

jaguarbass,
You just reinforce my premise. Your post is complete nonsense.
Delusion is a basis for happiness? I guess it could be but I know a lot of happy people who are not deluded by faith in the bible.
Your premise that only the Bible gives humans any basis for decency, kindness, morals, emptahy, compassion, etc is complete and total nonsense. I have traveled and lived extensively in the third world. I have lived among tribal people who have never heard of the bible or Christ or Christianity who do not have words in their language for hate, steal, hit, fight, argue, lie, etc. These people were loving beyond measure.
The nicest people I have been around were not members of any organized religion.

Confused by answers given by friend
by ArchDemon inhello,im not sure this is the right place to post, anyway ive never been a jw but i have a very good friend that is,lately her mother has been telling me to go to the meetings and i went only once because after that ive been to research alot about them and i didnt like what i saw at all.. anyway the thing is that i asked my friend is the following.
"can you disfellowship jw with no problem?
"she said "yes, you just need to inform them".. i already knew the answer should be no cause they are shunned and this couldnt possibly be,.
-
HappyGuy
They use high, mind-control tactics to control and indoctrinate their members.
They also use intimidation, extortion, and guilt to control the behavior of their members. "Do this or we will shun you and force all your friends and relatives to shun you". "Don't do this and we will send someone to give a special talk about how one's who don't do this shoudl be marked, we won't say who we are talking about but the gossip mill will make sure everyone knows it is you, oh and marking basically means shunning".

Where is God when the Haitians needed him?
by AK - Jeff inperhaps a hundred-thousand dead.
millions affected.. how many prayed in vain to stop the quaking, keep a loved one from dying, or for saftey?
all disregarded, all ignored.. he either doesn't care, is dead, or never was.

XJW4EVR,
this is why you Christains make me sick. You are equating the pointless death and suffering of 100s of thousands of people with little johnny skinning his knee during football practice.
Your argument is sickening. God allows suffering so that we can see the full exercise of god given compassion in the response of others to alleviate that suffering? What is your god? Psychotic? A sadist?
Okay, so say that god for some reason could not intervene to stop the earthquake before it started or soon after it started. If god is all powerful I don't see why not, but for the sake of argument, say there is some reason. So, he couldn't warn the victims of the impending disaster? Even "wicked" non-believing humans would do that, we do give such warnings, we spend a great deal of money and effort to try to predict such disasters and give warnings. But your all powerful god cannot be comassionate enough to give such a warning? If the god of the Bible does exist he is descpicable as are his defenders and excusers.
