McVeigh vs Death Penalty

i am a policitcal conservative, at least a fiscal conservative and sociel moderate.

i support the death penalty, but i agree that our judicial system needs to overhaul how wwe treat criminals to achieve better rehabilitation results.

and of course, withhold the death penalty in cases where there could be doubt.. in mcveigh's case, i believe that he deserves the death penalty.

Our society does not torture and rape rapists who've done the same thing to their victims, does it? We don't shoot people in the leg who have shot someone else in the leg. We don't beat the beaters and we don't run over with cars the vehicular man-slaughterers.
If we kill the killers, then we are being inconsistent and hypocritical.
The more evidence I see about DNA tests absolutely confirming the innocence of people who've been on death row for decades, the more I'm convinced we are not qualified to issue such a permanent and irrecovable punishment.

Very good point! I had not considered this. Something I had considered, however, was how likely the alleged killer would be to kill again... if the death penalty is available at all, this should be thoroughly considered. Something else to consider as far as the gov't issuing the death penalty... Is it just to intimidate? Just to clear another prison cell? A criminal should be punished according to the crime(s) committed, NOT according to public opinion and outcry when the public has not been privy to all evidence available.

What Caused Your First Doubt ?

for me it was when i was about twelve years old and my best friends dad was disfellowshipped from the congregation.. i could not understand how a god of love would treat someone so coldly.. i used to think what if that was the way my parents would treat me if i had done something wrong, that would be so hard and cruel.. as i got older another thing that bothered me was the beard issue.

it may sound pretty trivial however the society has always refused to make a good arguement as to why they would give you the old cold shoulder if you were to grow one.. two more items; first i could not understand why all the congregations and all the assemblys would give income reports.

and the society never did.

For me, my first doubt was caused by something so simple... I brought a friend with me to a Sunday "special talk", supposing it would induce her into coming to the meetings regularly with me. Afterwards, I asked her opinion on what she heard.. and she said the message of FEAR came across more strongly than anything else. I did have to agree with her. After all, aren't most of us attracted to love rather than fear?

Once this one simple thing was brought to the attention of my brainwashed mind, I doubted EVERYTHING... (one imperfection in this allegedly PERFECT structure was enough to make me doubt it ALL). It was at this time I ceased going to meetings and began my own research. This was the last sermon I ever subjected my ears to.

I feel VERY strongly about this entire subject. The death penalty is deserved in this case.

"He [ U.S. District Judge Richard Matsch] said McVeigh was at war against the federal government, ''but the United States government is not some abstraction, not some alien force. It is the American people, people in the Murrah Building who were there in service to their fellow American people.''

This statement is such a farce. The government does not reflect our opinions as American people, it relects their best efforts to build a facade of justice. While I do not agree with McVeigh's actions, I agree with his motives completely. Our forefathers would be sick with disgust, as the majority of intelligent Americans are, knowing how the Constitution (and our freedom) has been absolutely RAPED by by the federal government.

Again, I completely understand Timothy McVeigh's frustration with the government and his motives behind his actions. He knew very well what the repurcussions would be for his crime, but had the strength to stand for what he believes in (would any of us do the same?) in order to attempt to expose the government's gross lack of a justice system. I do not agree that the misguided act of taking the lives of innocent people was a solution to anything
(or justified by any means), however, with that much hatred and frustration festering like an open wound.... an event that drastic was bound to take place sooner or later.

The killer will be punished for his crime (by death, which I agree with in tis case), but I don't believe this should happen until ALL evidence pertaining to this crime is revealed to the American public, the very same people the judge in this case is supposedly attempting to pacify.
