To the OP: yes, in some ways they have lightened the load but they have ramped up the rhetoric so that those who don't fall in line are pushed to the side in the congregations. Only the uber-dubs are allowed in the inner circle of the congregations with the Elders and Pioneers. Also, you must remember that the cart work isn't available to every JW, you must be a pioneer or be approved by the Elders.

Easier to be a JW now?
by Xanthippe inreading konceptual's account of talking to cart 'witnesses' and it reminded me that when we left in '89 we thought the religion would do one of two things.
get more hardline, consequently lose members and eventually come to an end in some way.
or ease up on the members, fewer rules, less fs time, less meetings, just to keep them in.. all the recent apostate stuff, treatment of dfed kids and the hardline attitude to people who leave or try to fade has confused me, made me think they are harder on the r+f., but i don't think this is true.

What is the purpose of life?
by slimboyfat inwhile reading the magazines the other day it occurred to me that jws never really had a very good answer to that question.
because it was aimed at young people and it said something along the lines, "if you believe in god you have a purpose, but if you don't believe in god your life has no purpose or meaning".
i think that is a faulty analysis of the situation.

Your purpose is what you want it to be.
It is true that everything we do will eventually be rendered meaningless by the passage of time. The whole universe will cease to exist at some point, by which time mankind will likely be long gone. No one asks, what purpose did the Dinosaurs have? Why should man be any different?
Our actions will likely only effect a small group of people for a short period of time. Still, in the present we each must decide what and who we find important. What kind of person do we want to be? What effect will we have?

Were YOU forced into a loveless marriage?
by Nathan Natas inmany young jw women are "married off" to virtual strangers, often older men, soon after they are of legal age.. did this happen to you?.
did it happen to a close friend or sibling?.
tell us about it.. from universal life ministries on facebook:.

Originally, they both seemed ok with it, but it was obvious to outsiders that they were being pushed together. They are still together (4+ years) so we'll see, but we all felt they were railroaded into it because the brothers and their parents just wanted to get both of them "settled".
I have seen this numerous times if people have been dating awhile and seem to be "serious" then JWs will pressure them to get married even if they are having doubts. Or JWs will say that only "serious couples" can do certain things like sit together at meetings or publicly show affection. This is done to apply pressure to the couple to get engaged. I think JWs don't want people to court to long for fear that they may have sex before marriage. However, they are doing more harm by ruining people's reputation simply because they decide that a relationship is not going to work. In the org you could be a virgin and still have bad reputation because "you're not serious about getting married."

Circuit ASSembly low-lites
by FedUpJW inso in an effort to relieve some pressure here are what i term the low-lites of yesterday's assembly that i had to endure for the sake of family still in and my progressing fade.
apologies in advance for being pretty long winded.. these may not all be the actual words used, but the ones i use are close, and they pretty well say what was said from the platform.. right off the bat in the opening prayer the praises of the governing body were spoken.
thanking the g.b.

I hope they do have a new 'no news' policy!!!! My jw loves to watch news and then make the usual jw comment, "things are getting so bad, blah, blah, blah....."
Such a weird statement considering they used to say that JWs need to keep themselves informed so that they can see bible prophecy coming true. If they aren't watching the nightly news, how will they know that "this system is getting worse everyday single day" and "it can't last much longer?"

If Watchtower can use a non-sequitur to say that Jesus now knows the day and the hour, despite Matthew 24:36 ....
by Island Man in... where's the good sense preventing them from again making a date prediction for the end and using a non-sequitur to justify their claim in the face of matthew 24:36?
"... but christ has been empowered in heaven to wage war against satan's world.
(rev 19:11-16) thus, it is reasonable to conclude that jesus now knows when armageddon will occur...." - watchtower july 2016, page 14, par.

I don't think WT would go so far as too actually choose a date again. They will simply imply that certain dates could be significant, for some JWs that will be enough to get them excited about the truth. Look at the Revelation book it has a big disclaimer at the beginning and people still thought every word was 100% truth from heaven.

So my husband got a letter
by Lost his mind inso, he received a letter that i am wondering if it is one of those open letters that are out there to denote time given.
it starts out with the name of the person sending it, then goes into the spiel...do you know our god's name?
when i was shown what it is, i kind of got upset.

Not a chain letter, probably they are getting time by writing to homes they weren't able to reach door to door. More than likely this brother sends out two or three of those a day to get his time started.

Is changing the "truth" / presenting "new light" really so bad?
by Zana inplaying devil's advocate here.... what's the difference between the gb changing bible interpretations compared to parliaments all over the world changing laws?
although the us constitution (=bible) remains untouched, congress passes i don't know how many new laws every year.
and of course people are expected to follow them.

I would say that the motive behind changing something would have to be sincere and honest. For example, let's say a passage was traditionally interpreted a certain way but linguistic research showed that it could have a different meaning more in line with the context of the scriptures. Or a historical fact could disprove a certain interpretation and a new one that fits the historical reality would have to be made. In both cases the change is being made because new evidence has been found. The problem lies in changing doctrines and prophecies which really had no evidence to support them to begin with like the overlapping generation teaching or the FDS teachings. Nothing had changed, they were not grounded in a unbiased interpretation to begin with.

Rumor: Discouraging news from GB at upcoming CA?
by bohm inthis is on the reddit frontpage and sounds super weird.
can it be confirmed in any way by anyone here?.

It was an odd question because it had nothing to do with the rest of the talk. It felt like it was added to prepare people for some bad news they'll be getting later.

Well, at our circuit there wasn't any announcement but there was an odd question. The CO asked "What will your reaction be if you're asked to go to another KH? Or if your congregation is consolidated with another congregation? Will your faith be tested or will you see it as a practical arrangement and a wise use of dedicated funds?"

What happens if everyone you care about suddenly wake up?
by StarTrekAngel ini've been at this quest for a good part of two years.
i've experienced every negative feeling a human body and mind can experience.
i have, at times, become consumed.

I think it would leave a void for sure but one that would soon be filled with other things. We would probably have a lot of discussions about things we never talked much about like politics, philosophy, and science. It would definitely be interesting to find out what people really think. With more time we would be able to delve into our hobbies and dreams. We would all be our real selves for better or worse.
