Mill Hill Disfellowshippings
by BorgHater ina few months ago there was a thread about a couple of elders at the mill hill bethel being disfellowshipped because they disagreed with some wt doctrine (i can't recall exactly what it was) and that several other betheliteswere under 'investigation'.
i haven't heard anything since, does anyone know anything more about this?.

A honest question to all creationists

i dont have any clever arguments depending on what is answered, i am just curious.. first off i want to say that i think people are free to believe whatever they want.

Freydo - really?
Please make an effort to grasp the basics of what you are dismissing. Human chromosome 2 is a powerful piece of evidence for common ancestry.
I'm sure you have spent countless hours learning about your beliefs, why not commit some serious time and effort learning what biologists have discovered. It is the most fascinating thing you will ever do

I have never seen a debate that made such a difference to the views of the audience.
I think as Dawkins said many people "believe in belief", when the reality of the effects of religion were made clear by Fry and Hitchens it caused many to think again.
I would love to see reps of the watchtower agree to a formal academic debate!

Does anybody else feel relieved that they won't be tortured during the great tribulation?
by doublelife ini grew up hearing about different ways people have been tortured in the past and was always scared of going through that during the gt.
it was always an unhealthy obsession of mine.
i always thought that i was more worried about it than other jws and that i would end up renouncing my faith to get out of it.

When I was a kid everybody in the borg seemed obsessed with persecution and what might happen. It was really sick and difficult for a child to deal with.
The graphic details of what happened in Milawi made it much worse. Not happy memories at all

Interesting to see the words "theory" and "hypotheses" being used interchangeably; they have quite different meanings in this context.
A hypothesis is something that is unproven, it is close to what we mean by "theory" in everyday language. There are a number of hypothesis regarding abiogenesis for example. Some of them are very compelling but as yet not enough is known to be certain.
Evolution is not a hypothesis it is a theory in exactly the same way as gravity is a theory, or the movements of the planets are explained by a theory. It is an explanation for a whole body of facts, something that explains numerous pieces of information and shows how they fit together. It can also be used to make further predictions.
When I was at college I studied electrical "theory", it never occurred to me to ask my tutor why we were not studying electrical "facts". When somebody refers to a field of science as "only a theory" it is a sure indication they have made this common mistake.
Evolution resulting in the diversity of life on earth from a common ancestor is one of the best attested theories in science. It ties together a huge and growing body of facts from many related fields. It is as certain as the fact that the earth is not flat.
I used to believe everything that has been said above against evolution until I realised my main motive for rejecting it was an a priori position that there was a creator. When I studied it objectively I was overwhelmed by the weight of evidence. It is, in my opinion, the most fascinating subject in all of human knowledge. I recommend anybody to investigate it for themselves.

I want to be appointed as an Elder while I am still posting here, will Holy Spirit prevent me?
by african GB Member injust curious.. has anyone successfully tested the 'power' of the holy spirit by being appointed even though they were not zealous jw's?.

Appointments are determined by popularity with existing elders and nothing else. If you can really be bothered you could be a force for good but it will take a lot of maturity and compromise

The dubs will also take great comfort from Stephen Fry's follow up question about who wore purple triangles in concentration camps.
Good to see them being identified as a Millerite sect, can't say that often enough
