They perished because they were "guilty". Therefore repent or you will perish too.

Any atheists here? Have you come to terms with your new reality?
by kpop inalone, without my safety net of "god" being there to remember me when i die.
after much consideration, examining science, history and using logic, i have come to the conclusion that there is no "god" at least certainly no loving, personal "god.
" shortly before my final conclusion was reached, i read an excerpt from an expression attributed to marcus aurelius, .

So the idea of a God who allows innocent people to die does not contradict what Jesus taught,
Yes it does. Apparently they weren't innocent. He thought those particular individuals deserved it. That was the whole point of the text.
Tell me how murdering a quarter of a million men, women and children can be a perfect act of love.
I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous... Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. - Matt.5
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Matt.6
But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. - Luke 6
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. - Luke 12
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. - Jas.1
"Love ... always protects" - 1 Cor.13

Same reason I know the earth is not flat. We have all the evidence we need to be certain.
Drowning a quarter of a million men, women and children in a tsunami is not a perfect act of love as defined by Jesus.

Jesus explained very carefully that god is love and exactly what that love means in practice.
His words cannot ever be reconciled with reality.
We have all the relevant data, the evidence is in. The god and father of Jesus - the god who is love - does not exist.

is it inconceivable that it could also happen in relation important questions such as: is there a God and why is there suffering?
Nope

I don't understand why your making a personal attack against him.
SBF is hostile to all statements of truth, facts or reasonable certainty.
When you hesitate to affirm that planet earth is not flat it must be really irritating to hear somebody who is comfortable with their evidence-based conclusions.
The god of Jesus does not exist. I am as sure about that as I am about anything. The claims of all theists are wrong; those of diests are just superfluous and uninteresting.
That still leaves an awful lot of things we really don't know, but at least it clears away some of the mess that obscures the search for truth.

I no longer have a yearning for everlasting life or a fear of death.
It is a very real question for me. I have metastatic cancer currently in remission. I am awaiting results of the latest CT scans. Statistically my chances are maybe 30%.
I feel sad at the idea that if it comes sooner or later there are so many things I will never know about. So much will happen after I am gone that I would have loved to see but just by being here for a while makes us very fortunate. We won the biggest lottery just by being born.
Some people feel that unless life its eternal then it is pointless. I don't find much comfort in the knowledge that my atoms will go on. I think the answer is to find contentment in the little pleasures. Live in the moment. Find something each day that you will later remember with a smile. You don't have to change the world to have a life that was worthwhile.

Jehovah's Witnesses View of Jesus Compared to the Early Church
by cofty inthe following is an extract from something i wrote 16 years ago soon after leaving the watchtower.
i am posting it because it may help honest jws consider how far their beliefs are at odds with new testament christians.
if they have "the truth" then their attitude to jesus ought to reflect that of the apostles.

Thanks. I think this approach can be useful.
Personally I would completely avoid verses like John 20:28 and John 1:1. JWs have heard them many times and they have automatic responses to them. Don't try to prove that Jesus was god or go anywhere near the trinity dogma you will end up in a pointless battle of proof-texting.
You can allow them to assume that Jesus was created and subordinate to God and even that the NWT is a perfect translation. That is a lot of common ground to start from.
The OP builds a case for proving that the way JWs relate to Jesus is very different from the early church. That should give an honest JW cause for concern.

It's right there in our faces, how could we NOT see it?
by NikL ini know there have been many many posts on here over the years on the deity of jesus.. i am submitting this one because i am feeling a little confused.. the thing is, i am not the sharpest knife in the drawer and i know this.
so when i am going through my bible reading (to all you haters, yes i still do it) i see so many scriptures that just fly in the face of everything the jws teach about jesus.. i begin to wonder if indeed i am diseased in the mind ,as they will try to paint me, because it seems so plain to me.. i never even gave it a though growing up as to if jesus and god were equal.
i just didn't.. now when i read scriptures like philippians 9.... 9 for this very reason, god exalted him to a superior position+ and kindly gave him the name that is above every other name,+ 10 so that in the name of jesus every knee should bend—of those in heaven and those on earth and those under the ground+— 11 and every tongue should openly acknowledge that jesus christ is lord+ to the glory of god the father.. .
