EP - You are reading thing back into the gospels that cannot be honestly read out of them.

Jesus was a failed apocalyptic prophet. He started as a disciple of John the Baptist and went on to develop his own following. Just like every failed prophecy since, his followers found new ways to interpret his prognostications in order to maintain their beliefs.

He absolutely did drag men away from their wives and families to preach his deluded ravings. 'We have left wives etc etc for you'. He was a dangerous egomaniac but probably sincere.

EP - It is undeniable that Jesus was just another 1st C. apocalyptic preacher - one of many, many others.

He chose to be baptised by an apocalyptic prophet and after his death his small band of disciples continued ot preach an apocalyptic message.

He told his disciples to abandon their wives, families and businesses and literally FOLLOW him preaching the imminent end of all things.

If you can't see that then you have clearly never read the gospels.

Jesus believed he was living in the last days. He turned out to be a false prophet.

His modern disciples are just following his example. There has hardly been a generation in the last 2,000 years that Christians have not been predicting the imminent end.

i guess you could say jesus was the first christian, since he was the christ.

and as the first christian, jesus spoke more about hell that any other biblical figure.

but, he is also the figure that said that he didn't come to condemn the world, but to save it.

i’m agnostic so maybe the universe started by chance or by design.. if it was by design (hypothetically) and the bible is the designers word, and jws seem to be the closest to it, then what would be the largest things you would change?.

here are a few ideas.

-do away with the governing body thinking they are gods only channel.

I have not said any such thing.

I agree with everything Grretteacher said about how false the so-called love of JWs is.

They will literally treat you as if you are dead for a thought crime. Parents will cut off their own children and exclude their grandchildren from their lives. Parents will let their infant child die for want of life-saving medical treatment. They will allow pedophiles to carry on their evil crimes safe from the authorities because they value the reputation of their precious cult more than the safety of their children.

If you think love can be built on a foundation of enforced uniformity of thought you are still under its spell.

Cofty which organisation do you think is closer to the truth about the Bible than JWs?

What you are actually asking is - which organisation that agrees with the way the JWs interpret the bible is closer to the truth?

The bible does not present a consistent view of any major doctrine so it all depends on your preferences. JWs major on trivial things and miss the big picture.

Specifically they have a view of Jesus that is at odds with the early church. Secondly the JWs story of the meaning of Jesus' death would be alien to them.
