finally, i will look at biblical and patristic evidence bearing on the crucifixion of jesus in particular.
we need to examine the earliest known descriptions of the kind of crucifixion adopted by the romans and the specific terms they used to refer to it.
apparently the society believes that crux still meant "stake" in the second century a.d., when tacitus composed his annals.
Great post Ms Leo! So much reading, my poor bloodshot eyes :) I still didn;t have enough time to read every post on every page yet, so if I overlap someone's post, please forgive [as is the Christian way;}.
In very short terms - the reasoning from scriptures [1985 pgs 89-93] indicate that stauros means an upright pale or stake in classical Greek.
The problem is that the classical Greek hadn't been spoken for centuries by the time of Jesus. The bible is written in koine Greek [which is Hellenistic]. Stauros [in koine Greek] means 1]an upright stake with a cross beam above it.2] two intersecting beams of equal length, or 3] a vertical stake.
So, it is possible that could mean a vertical stake, but there is no evidence to support such a claim.
A better word for stake in koine Greek would have been skolops.

the watchtower has been known for over 130 years as a great scriptural cherry-picker.
they pick out disparate unrelated verses and combine them to support the wackiest of wacky doctrines.. on the other hand there are many scriptures they almost never address, whether because they contradict wt doctrine or because they simply don't have a clue what they mean or how to spin them to the wt advantage.. one of these is revelation 19:1 that mentions a "great crowd" "in heaven.
" the only time it is ever brought up it is dismissed.

So Stephen, why does the Trinity version of god like to appear to Catholics as a face on a burned Tortilla but in your Church he appears as a pulsating crotch on an old guy and as Miracle Rice Crispy's. How come the Fundamentalists never get the Tortilla version.
hmmmmm
The short answer is because Catholics have the truth and God lets them know by small signs and blessings.
We can all understand that you were taught that the trinity is false. It is truely up to us all to test the if we are in the faith. Scripture indicates that one God is made of three beings. The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost are all called God in scripture. You think because the Father is called Almighty that Jesus and the Holy Ghost are lessor gods?
Should you believe in the Trinity indicates that there is no Trinity. Should you believe booklet is filled with lies. Not my opinion, that is a fact. If the Trinity was false, then why lie in a booklet? If it were false, one wouldn't have to lie about it, it would just be false.
The Church fathers believed in the trinity. They were taught by the apostles and they would defend against twisters of scripture.
One question for any anti trinitarian. If Jesus is a god and not God, then what kind of god is he, a true god or a false god?

Any of YOU pray to "I AM? Did He say THAT Name would be His...FOREVER?
I would bet that the Jews who heard Moses speak of God prayed to I AM. I know for a fact that they did not pray to Jehovah, because that name was not in existince until the 13th century ad.
It is written what is written. What is written is the word of God. It seems that these scriptures don't agree with your mental taste, eh Plankton?

Oh Plankton, will you ever learn that God hates lies.
There is no such thing as lying for the truth.
The apostles and their diciples would agressively defend against your exact type of scripture twisting.

Thanks Stephen, you certainly rock on the scriptures bro. I'm sure you'd admit that if you we're so humble ;)

hello - my bro [and many others] often speak of how the true teachings of jesus and the apostles were corrupted and as one poster recently wrote 'since then, the catholic church has been forcing the trinity down our throat'.
is there any evidence to support the great apostasy?
is there any evidence to support such claims?.
Like you said Agonus 'who is to determine whether a spiritual teaching can be labeled true or false'?
That is where faith comes in. I believe the Holy Ghost is the one who determined the biblical truth, but admittedly, that is my faith, not science.

This is a very interesting blog. It is quite informative and highly entertaining to boot. I would like to make a small request that after scripture is quoted, could we please point out why the JWs would ignore it.
thanks,

I agree that there is much more written material than people are led to believe, but that is because the false teachings had to be weeded out. Books like the gospel of Mary, the gospel of Judas and the gospel of Peter were deemed 'not of divine inspiration' There were many other rejected books also.
Another problem with the great apostasy theory is that it makes Jesus look like an idiot who couldn't get his church up and running. He spoke of the fool who built his house on sand and the house caved in. Seems pretty unlikely that he didn't follow his own advise. Jesus also promised that the gates of hell would never prevail against his church. That his church would stand for all generations.

I was wondering the same thing.
How can you apostasize (apostatize?) from a "religion" that was never really a "religion" to begin with?
Often, when my brother [he's JW, I'm a Catholic,] doesn't like a comment or question, he will say or ask something rather indecipherable that has you just scratching your head. I wonder if that is some watchtower taught trick he pulls.
The 1st question that I asked is about any proof of an apostasy.
The standard answer of 'yes, just look around' doesn't answer any questions.
