  today's high school students in the usa:.

  less than 1/2 of them cannot identify the century when our civil war happened.. one in four thought columbus discovered america sometime after 1750.. one in three cannot name one right enumerated in the bill of rights.. three out of four cannot name the first us president.. two out of three do not know the length of term of a member of the house of representatives.. half cannot find britain on a map.. one out of four cannot find america on a map.. when my oldest daughter, who is now a physician was in 9th grade in this once-great state of california, i asked her about the three branches of our federal government.

  she was clueless and told me she would take civics in her junior year in high school.

  The "school grading system" referred to above is a grade given to schools, not students. In his previous position in Indiana, Mr. Bennett was found to have manipulated an A grade to a charter school set to receive a lower grade. Coincidently that school is run by a huge GOP donor (close to 3 million with 130k to Mr. Bennett himself). When the GOP talks about "reform" they mean one thing, private profits. The Bush family is well acquainted with such profits.

  Here is a very interesting article on education in Finland. They are at the top in math, science and reading. We would do well to take some hints from them. A long article, but well worth it if one is interested in the subject.

  JGnat, what if you tried to make coffee in the morning and the water stunk and tasted so bad of chlorine, that you coudn't taste the coffee? Or when you turned on the shower it had such an overpowering smell of chlorine, your shower made you feel as though you needed another?

  I used to live with this.

  My question would be, what is or isn't being done at the source to require this kind of chlorination?

  This is not to be confused with flouridation.

  I haven't read this thread, but I do believe that Flouride in the water is positively wrong. There is plenty of evidence out there that it is harmful, little that it is beneficial, and ultimately, who chooses what my water is dosed with?

  Unfortunately this poor lady was probably only following her earbud orders. As for Mr. Aslans humbleness, how many times can someone answer the same ignorant question??

  ... that they actually have more of a desire to get to knoww you then jehovah's witnesses.

  for years at the kingdom hall although i was an elder everyone "knew of me" but no one knew me.

  i realized that i never really had a friend who knew anything about me as a person or my background.

  Awesome. This is one of the main things I think JW's took from us. A distrust of other humans. I have a cousin who was late leaving, and she was so stoked when she sat and had an ice cream cone with her family and talked to a "wordly" person.

  Now don't you smoke too many ceegars mister!! It IS tobacco, and not good for ya!

  charter schools, typically can do a better job on a fraction of the unionized public school system. This is the uncomfortable fact that Obama pays lip service to but politically is in a corner with another giant union breathing down his neck. The losers are the kids being churned out of public schools with third world educations.

  The union teachers are well paid and get Cadillac benefits and pensions. Every election, local, state and national puts more funding for public education at the top of the list. They appreciate the money. The kids don't learn to read, etc. so that on graduation they can get a job or go to a community college.

  This is a shameful, rotten system. In Detroit,MI, Stockton, Ca, Jefferson County, Ala. Orange County Ca. San Bernardino, Ca. ad infinitum, the public employees unions have been a major part in the raping of the taxpayers with not even a kiss on the back of their neck. Illiterate kids being graduated that cannot read? " You cheap bastards didn't pay enough!"
