JWN member now famous comedian
by MMXIV injwn member "matahari" deborah frances-white is a stand-up comedian, corporate speaker, screenwriter and executive coach.. http://www.deborahfrances-white.com/.
deborah was raised in australia, became a jehovah's witness as a teenager, left her religion and family to come to london with a one way ticket, has worked as an interpreter in both sign language and japanese, read english at the university of oxford, and has lived in a number of countries including america and israel.. not the first time she has been mentioned on jwn.. it seems she wasn't content to fulfil her potential in the truth of being a quiet subservient sister using her skills to repeat ungrammatical verses of the watchtower but instead developed herself into an admired motivator and comedian.. maybe a jwn meet-up at one of her gigs?.

Those who went to University whilst being a JW
by MMXIV ini've read a number of posts in the brief couple of years i've been on jwn of those that were brave enough to go to university whilst being a jw.. clearly this is a small fraction of those that wanted to go but couldn't or had the grades to go but accepted pioneering instead.. for those that did go to uni despite all the advice and pressure, why did you go?
what was the response when you broke the news?
how did it affect your relationships?

Lance Armstrong - what does it mean for devoted fans to hear him admit he was a cheat
by MMXIV inanyone interested in sport will be aware of lance armstrong's final admission to taking banned substances to win the tour de france 7 times.
he was a fraud.
his many fans, fans of cycling and people who also suffered cancer that looked up to him and his incredible achievements have given lots of different reactions to his confession.

Pioneering - the best job in the world!
by MMXIV inhow often did i hear those words at circuit or district assemblies - that pioneering was the best job in the world?
how often did i hear a fake job advert for pioneering where there was 100% job satisfaction working for the most powerful person in the universe and you'd get to travel the world and live forever.... i've done both jobs and would say that the job advert should more honestly read like this:.
secular job.

UK law changed to allow prosecution of those who stay silent over child abuse
by MMXIV inthe domestic violence, crime and victims (amendment) act 2012 comes into force on monday in england and wales to allow prosecution for those who stay silent over a child's serious physical abuse.. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18638734.
whilst this law was put in place to stop a loophole whereby those who commit child murder claim it was someone else while they just remained silent, this now makes those who do not take steps to stop the abuse equally guilty.. elders who do not take steps to stop or report the serious abuse of minors could face prosecution and 10 years in prison.
it may no longer be good enough to tell the abused or abusers it's their right to go to authorities (per the 2010 elders manual) they now need to take action.. whether criminal prosecutions are brought against elders who masquerade as police, judge, jury and social workers whilst not themselves reporting abuse of a minor will remain to be seen, however the law now exists to make it possible.. any jw child who comes to serious harm where the elders knew about it should ask themselves - could i have stopped this by telling the police?

Anyone been to a meeting after a drink...or three?
by MMXIV ini recall going to the second half of a thursday night meeting after what was meant to be a cheeky after work beer (three strong beers downed quickly on an empty stomach).
i would have been ok had a caring elder not decided to grab me for some encouragement afterwards.. i hoped the faint odor of smoke on my clothes (smoking in pubs was still the done thing in those days) wouldn't be noticed but hard to hide alcohol on the breath.
i tried to say very little and talk in a way that avoided me beathing over him.

New strategy - Armageddon survival training - have the WBTS missed a trick?
by MMXIV inok so the thread from lits on the armageddon to go bag got me thinking that the wtbs have missed a trick here.. why not teach all jws first aid and simple survival techniques ready for armageddon and as a side benefit they become disaster savy helpers, basically trained good samaritans?
could this be a future strategic sideline for the wbts?.
biblical precedent (aka wbts precedent): they have taught for many years that proof the bible is inspired of god in some small part is due to survival techniques used by the israelites in the desert (hygiene etc).
