me and my wife just got this great book from the library entitled 'i'm perfect you're doomed:tales from a jehovah's witness upbringing' writtin by kyria abrahams (an ex-jw).
i'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned or read it (it's still fairly new), but it is a great book.
for anyone who was raised in the 'troof' or group up in it you will find it very interesting.
I read the book several months ago,
When I returned the book, I stuck several little sticky notes with this website written on them.

when pointing out my objections to the jw religion with my wife, i have noticed a worrying trend which even after 3 or 4 years shows no sign of relenting.. after speaking calmly for an hour or so and logically pointing out my objections, my wife starts to put forward outrageous assertations about my points.
for instance, if i am refering to the fact that disfellowshipping is a form of extreem punishment & i mention the terrible effects that being d/f'd can have on people, she will eventually retort with something like "so what you are saying is that we should tolerate paedophiles, rapists & thieves in the organisation then?".
of course, i've never at any point said anything of the sort.. or if i have been overly critical of the amount of control the society wants over peoples lives, she would reply "so what you are saying is that we should all just go out & do what we want, get drunk & live an immoral life?
She said 'its better we don't talk about this subject'. Doh!
To me this is probably the sadest part of all. To be married to someone and not be able to discuss everything on your mind. You don't have to agree, with the other person, but why can't you at least discuss it.
I'm so glad I'm married a non-JW...oh and the fact that he thinks I'm the smartest person he's ever known is pretty cool too.

a jehovahs witness came to my door today.
she wouldnt breathe long enough for me to say who i was in her presentation.
finally i just interjected "you're a jehovahs witness right?
Damnit, they won't come to my house anymore...even when I request a study from their website.

this is not a thread to gain sympathy.
my life has changed dramatically over the weekend.
my husband (hoboken) has just left me and my two boys.. i'm not going to divulge all the details, but needless to say things are very tough emotionally for all of us.
I know this isn't easy right now.
But is is kinda exciting...beginning a new life. You have more of an idea of what you like and don't. What you want, what you don't want. hehehe..Life can be good.

i'm not even sure where to begin with this.. my father is considered an apostate and i haven't been allowed to talk to him for 14 years.
now i don't even have any connections to him.
i don't know anyone he knows and i don't even know basic things like where he lives.. any help on someplace where i could look him up would be appreciated..
We need to know....have you met your dad yet or called him yet?
lisa
last night he called at 2 am, woke my wife up, she answered the phone.
he was drunk, yelling and threatening to break into our house and physically harm me because i had his sorry ass thrown out for punching my stomach and destroyed our property while drunk on that day on july 8th.. she hit the flasher button (strobe light attached to a remote thingy that is activated by a remote button) and woke me up.
i go to her room and find her crying.
Maybe you can get a friend to spend a few days with you until this blows over.
Keep 911 on speed dial.
Sorry you're having to go though this.
I hope your son gets the help he needs

i've been reading the topic about how garrido met his wife while in prison, and the discussion about how prison inmates are preached to by jw's.. has anyone done any research into how many people claiming to be jw's there are in prison?
in the uk it should be quite easy to find out because of the freedom of information act.
it could even be broken down to how many are in dispersal prisons (and so for much more serious offences), and how many are covered by rule 43 (segregated for their own protection), and how this measures as a total of the prison population.. the last time i looked it up, there was 1 jw to approx 300 people in the uk.
I don't know the answser to your question, but it reminded me of something that happened in the 80's.
An elder and wife had a son that was df'd.
He was supposedly addicted to drugs. He robbed a bank and took a woman hostage, and had her drive him somewhere. Of course later he was caught and went to prison.
While he was in prison and df'd...someone came to study with him. And on the night of the Memorial, some elders came to the prison to pass the wine and bread to him.
What was weird about that, was I also was df'd....I was at the KH, and the elder passing the bread and wine, passed over me and handed the imblems to the person on the other side of me. He actually had to step in front of me, so as to make sure I didn't even touch the cup and plate.
Yet this man in prison got a special visit.
WTH was up with that? (oh, maybe because I don't have a dangly part)
He later got reinstated while in prison!
