we received an invitation in the mail yesterday for my jw niece's wedding.. i am posting this just to add for any lurkers to see typical jw practices.. 1st - and perfectly understandable for anybody who is or was a jw.

jp1692 - no, it's a pattern with her, we had a discussion about the invitation ... I brought it up ... she felt it was rude too and had come to that before we talked about it, her reply was basically, to paraphrase "what do you expect, consider the source, it's my brother" ... it's more a marriage problem than anything else and I just don't see much of a point

Liz, I can't imagine what you went through. You are so brave.

I have a close personal friend that was brought up in a JW household and was sexually abused from the age of 4 or 5 until around 12 by her older brother. She didn't tell her parents until she was in her late 30's, so it wasn't a JW cover-up. Her parents chose not to believe her. JW's sure do have a messed up way of dealing with these things.

just fine ... the thing is, technically, as far as JW's are concerned, I'm inactive, I haven't been to the Kingdom Hall in 7 years. I have no problem not being included with my wife in JW activities, I'm sure she gets fewer invitations to do things with JW friends since she became a sister who's husband has faded.

Sure, we know JW's are to avoid unnecessary contact with faded JW's, but this is a family wedding. "Worldly" relatives are invited. It would seem proper to invite her husband to their niece's wedding. I can't imagine accepting an invitation to an event like this that blatantly excluded my wife.

I can't even understand the thought process. What even went through the family member's mind when preparing the guest list?

On the one hand, YAY! I don't have to go to this wedding! On the other hand ... seriously?

I really don't give a rat's ass about going to the wedding. I'm hurt for my daughter and how she has been treated. I'm pissed at my wife because whenever there are opportunities to stand by her husband, she will always yield to anything cult related.

... Jeez! I could go on and on and ....

I spoke with my wife about this and she agreed that it was rude that I was excluded from the invite yet she still plans on attending.

I'm tired of being disposable in my marriage when it comes to the cult.

I do nothing to prevent my wife from participating in her religion but that she doesn't take a stand and draw the line here is bothering me.

Am I wrong?

It is a package deal ... . Any wedding invitation extended to one married partner must properly include the spouse. Any claim to the contrary is not just abominable etiquette, it is an insult to your marriage.

HA HA! So true GLTirebiter! Maybe in the wicked worldly way, but not in the convoluted rules of JW Land!

"We received an invitation" was an erroneous introductory statement. The invitation was expressly addressed to Mrs. Doesn't Wannabefree and Daughter Freebutneverbaptized.

Lloyd’s new book

i see there has already been discussion over lloyd’s new book how to leave the jehovah's witnesses.

this includes discussion around his personality, motives and financial gains.

i have written a foreword for this book, because it is an important topic that has not been covered in such a complete format before.

Your site is number one for me.

Unfortunately I imagine it would be difficult for it to be a revenue generator. I wish you could make a living off of it because in my opinion it is key in giving life to many.

More power to Lloyd. I never considered myself to be a personal fan of his, although I've only had superficial experience and hold off on judging the man in any depth. He does perform a good work. I couldn't do it.

Your site was key for me personally. It gave me what I needed to get over the first hurdle. When I was waking up I was afraid of this site and all of the apostate talk, freeminds scared me too. JWFACTS.COM gave me the tools I needed. It just seemed like an honest site presenting factual information without viciously attacking the faith that I still held but was starting to question.

I felt very alone during the waking up and leaving process. This site brought me in contact with others who had already walked the path I was on and some that also had just begun the journey.

When I was finally able to open myself up to this site, I didn't know what to do, what to expect, who to trust. I asked for advice about books I could read for myself, how to help my children. This was information that I needed.

The title of Lloyd's new book is one that I might have been interested in at one time and can see a need for it. I hope it is helpful to all who read it.

Vanderhoven ... I was surprised but admire her courage to stand out. The dress is slightly different than the other bride's maid dresses.

Pale.Emperor .. I'm livid about it. My daughter hates what the religion does to control people, but loves her cousin. My first thought, if it were me, I told my daughter ... would be to explain how controlling and unreasonable this was for the organization to come between them and decline the invitation ... but she still wants to be there for her cousin.

I am posting this just to add for any lurkers to see typical JW practices.

1st - and perfectly understandable for anybody who is or was a JW. I'm not invited. :) Hey, I'm really not complaining about that. Our families were close when I was in, but I understand ... after all, I was an elder at one time, I know how these things work. Still, it's pretty bad manners. My wife is fully in and of course is invited (it's her brother's daughter that is getting married - - after the typical very short dating period of a young couple). Attending the wedding will require a modest bit of travel and expense. I'm not disfellowshipped. These family members have no problem visiting with me when we do cross paths ... Just another one of many invites that I, the uninvited inactive JW, will be expected to fund but not attend. ;)

2nd - and this is really the one that gets me - how my daughter is treated - this daughter of mine is no longer a believer but was never baptized. Fortunately I woke up during the period that I was encouraging her to get baptized and changed from coaxing her towards baptism to encouraging her to make sure of things. Do her own research. After all, JW's are to "make the truth their own" ... right?

My daughter and her bride to be cousin grew up very close, best friends.

A couple of months ago my daughter was invited to spend a day out of town with the cousin and her mother to shop for a wedding dress and bride's maid dresses. I was surprised by this when she told me and we both thought it was odd, but she was very happy to have been included because they had been so close and during their younger years they often talked about their wedding plans.

My daughter returns from the two day shopping trip and tells me what a good time she had with her cousin and aunt and that she was going to be the maid of honor and ordered her dress.

Again, I was surprised by this, knowing the family and knowing how weddings are micromanaged by the elders. (I had already gone through a Kingdom Hall wedding with another of my daughters ... another story.) My dear daughter told me that the wedding was not going to be held at a Kingdom Hall but would be on a beach on an island and her cousin wanted her to be her maid of honor ... it's what they had always planned. Well, this eliminated the Kingdom Hall problem and JW's can have some latitude if they aren't asking to get married there. However, she told me that an elder would be performing the wedding. I asked if this was already approved because I can't see an elder performing a wedding where non-JW's are part of the wedding party. She said that her aunt and cousin spoke as though all was well.

A month later she gets the phone call. Her cousin notifies her that she can't be in the wedding. Apparently they hadn't gotten the approval to include my daughter in the wedding party and the elder said no. Also, the groom's family refuses to be a part of the wedding if my daughter is included. Breaks my heart, but I wasn't surprised. My daughter, while hurt, wasn't completely surprised. BUT, they still want her to be at the wedding and offered to reimburse her for the maid of honor dress (which she declined) ... and, she can't bring her boyfriend to the wedding. The cousin wants my daughter to still be there at her side throughout the day, getting their hair done together ... although I cautioned my daughter to not be surprised if this changes too.

She loves her cousin and still plans to attend the wedding and wear the dress.

Yeah, it's a cult.
