Can I ask elders a question without getting in trouble?
by NiceDream inrecently i found no scriptural evidence to support 607 or therefore 1914. and the new overlapping generation really bothers my conscience because i don't see how it is scripturally supported.. .
if i write a letter to bethel, or talk with local elders, i am afraid of getting df'd because i don't want to cause family conflict (with my spouse's family, not mine).
i asked my spouse if it would be ok if i talked with an elder because i want answers, but don't want to cause family problems.

Recently I found no scriptural evidence to support 607 or therefore 1914. And the new overlapping generation really bothers my conscience because I don't see how it is scripturally supported.
If I write a letter to Bethel, or talk with local elders, I am afraid of getting DF'd because I don't want to cause family conflict (with my spouse's family, not mine). I asked my spouse if it would be ok if I talked with an elder because I want answers, but don't want to cause family problems. My spouse wasn't sure and needs to think about it. This makes me think it's going to end badly.
My spouse and I talked extensively over the last WT about holy spirit and how it gives new light. I asked how can we know which WT statements are directed by God's holy spirit and which are "imperfect men" writing their own thoughts, because things keep changing (1935 sealing, generation, Christ's presence, etc).
My spouse said "I will always be a JW and nothing is going to change that because I know it's the truth." I am afraid I have gone too far asking unanswerable questions.
Would you bother to ask the elders some questions or would you just be at peace knowing that this isn't "the truth" and leave it at that?

I don't know how many times I've been told to "ignore the people, go for Jehovah!" Isn't love supposed to be the identifying mark?
sir82, most Witnesses I know are dysfunctional and on antidepressants or anxiety medication.
"WHOM shall we go away to?," sd-7, I didn't know this until I looked on JWN. It's Jesus...not an organization! Imagine actually reading what the Bible says without WT reasoning. Thanks for posting this falsehood.

No love, too many messed up JW families.
I didn't understand why Jesus would pick the organization in 1918 or why the group got a start in the late 1800s. Once I looked into the history and beliefs, stumbled across Beth Sarim, 1925, 1975 and the treatment of the brothers, there was no turning back.
This recent generation change was the final straw. Why does God use his Holy Spirit to misdirect people with all these dates and keep changing what Jesus evidently meant when talking about "this generation." 3 times in 15 years is a bit much.

What difference does it make if we are born in?
by wanderlustguy inborn in, what difference does it make?.
i was thinking about this one a lot over the last few weeks.
what difference does it make whether you were born into a cult or were brought in as a teen or adult?

Excellent post! I was 4 when my parents became JWs. I didn't fit in at school or at the hall because my parents were spiritually weak. After I married, I was living a lie, trying to be someone I wasn't. I am now 27 and realized why I've been so unhappy, and I feel free and excited to live my life.
We do better when we know better! Now I just have to free my hubby so my son can grow up semi-normal! I'll make sure to teach my son the real truth so he doesn't grow up being afraid or feeling guilty about everything.

I want to know whether 607 is valid or not.
by XPeterX ini seek concrete evidence.explain it in a few words or post links that can contradict jw material.if 607 is a lie then 1914 is lie..

My husband and I searched to "prove" 607 was correct, but we couldn't find any evidence outside WTBTS books. A prophecy isn't a prophecy unless it can be verified with history...607 can't, and therefore, 1914 isn't correct.
Read Gentile Times Reconsidered, the evidence stacks up for 586/587 - Lunar eclipses, secular history of different nations, 1000s of cuneiform tablets.
How do you know 539 is an absolute date without using secular history? There are no dates in the Bible, you need to look at secular history. Why pick one date and reject another? Does that honestly make sense?
Compare King's lists of Babylon/Assyria and Eygpt. The dates work with the 586/587 chronology and Battle of Carchemish. Unless of course you believe that two different nations conspired together and altered historical books so the WTBTS could prophecy and then forget to add a "0" year and change the date again.

Some things you did as a JW that you look back at and laugh about
by gubberningbody ini remember that right after france did a job on the wtbs w/taxes on donations i used an email-harvester and spammed about 250,000 french email addresses with an advertisement for free bible studies and a link to the french site.. .
i remember getting some replies, like "you can't do that, that's illegal.
" and i said "i'm an american, and it's legal here.

In college I stumbled across a book on Jehovahs Witnesses at the library. I was afraid it was "apostate" so I threw it in the garbage!!! I'm not sure what kind of book it was, it had lots of coloured pictures...maybe it was from the WTBTS?
In high school, everyone was assembled in the gym and had to pretend to vote. I was such a loser that I tried to avoid voting, and then lied and told my teacher I already voted even though I didn't cause it was "bad." I guess lying was less bad?

JWs pretended to be someone else at my door.
by myusername inthis is probably in the wrong section, but i couldn't decide where to put it.
i was raised a jw and i still suffer effects from that kind of upbringing.. anyway, they said they were local community volunteers and they wanted to give me something related to the community.
i didn't open the door but they put a jw tract through it.. i don't think it's right to be so devious about recruitment.

Yes, we would have presentations saying we were neighbours that lived in the community or we were doing volunteer work.
I'll never forget using a KM presentation on safety, placing it, and then accidently returning to the same house the following week. The lady was furious with me for coming across as a "volunteer" talking about saftey and then giving her a religious magazine. My husband suggested I could add the magazine was "Bible based" to my future presentations.

Frugal Ideas for a Beautiful but Inexpensive Wedding!
by StAnn inas i've proclaimed so loudly, my oldest son is getting married next year.
we have a small budget (about $5k) and they want a wedding with three bridesmaids, three groomsmen, and a catered reception.
thus far, my son is going to load his ipod with music.

A friend of mine getting married is having raspberry and lime green for her colours and it looks amazing. Very summery colours. The bridesmaids are wearing simple black dresses, and her Mom made raspberry sashes for the dresses. The men are wearing a lime green striped tie.
To cut costs at my wedding we bought all the food ourselves and had some friends help make it. We BBQ'd satays and chicken for dinner. And we bottled our own wine and bought a keg of beer for the bar.
You can make your own center pieces with dollar store vases, floating candles, and those glass rocks things.
I'm not sure if they want an outside wedding, but maybe hanging lanterns (like the ones from Ikea) could add an Asian flair to the wedding without having too many themes?
