My Wedding Photos are. . .

with the exception of my wife and my best man, they're all jws.

I know how you feel about the wedding photos being chock full of JWs. Ours was a KH wedding back in the mid 1970s, but as we moved to different congregations over the years, then stopped going to meetings altogether over 20 years ago we haven't got a clue who many of of the faces on our wedding photos belong to, apart from family and a few friends.

A lot of the other guests were members of our congregation but could have been total strangers who wandered in off the street as far as we know, we haven't seen them in all these years and just don't recognise them!

Our lives have changed so much since then, it's like looking at the wedding photos of another couple. Quite surreal.

Watchtower 2011 July 15 Study Edition: Are all study editions like this?

so during my research on the wts, i stubled across a link to the july 15th watchtower.. .

i'm assuming that the study editions are the ones that they only give to members/ those who attend meetings.. .

I quite agree punkofnice, I feel the same way about my loved ones stuck in the borg being brainwashed into believing this rubbish, which is why I am hoping that the occasional quick, funny, throw away comments such as yours will be helpful to use in defence against a JW in full flow. It throws their OWN doctrine back at them in a way that makes them sound ridiculous, and catches them unawares before they are able to allow their eyes to glaze over and revert to 'dubby dreamworld' as you so accurately put it. You are not arguing with them, just passing a comment.

I would guess your wife was angry because it hit a nerve. A similar thing happened when I made a flippant remark to my sister about how clever Rutherford was to get away with living a life of luxury in Beth Sarim back in the 1920s by telling everyone he was looking after it for Abraham, due to be resurrected back onto the earth at any moment. I said, you've got to give it to him, he got everyone believing him so he was a clever bloke wasn't he. She was not amused!

Hopefully these short, flippant remarks of ours will awaken something in their subconciouses to make them start thinking for themselves before the instruction in WT 6 (16) Avoid false teachers (and apostates, especially those damn apostates) takes over their brain.

The site is full of experiences where similar things have happened, so who knows!

What made you leave "The Truth"?

for me it was many things.

most concerned certain teachings that invloved genders, children, sex, sexuality and sexual orientations, disfellowshipping, apostates, blood, rape, and few other things, as well as the jw's unloving attitude toward so many people..

I had known it was not 'The Truth' for many many years and just kept going because of not wanting to hurt my parents and later, for the sake of my marriage.

It all started a few years after I was baptised when I found a load of books and Watchtowers going back to Russell and Rutherford on a book shelf in the house of a very elderly brother, including a Birthday Book! I couldn't believe what I was reading and how the Society had changed so many of its doctrines. The scales fell from my eyes that day but I was terrified of telling anyone how I felt for fear of being disfellowshipped and shunned by everyone.

I started to fade as best I could after the birth of my second child using every excuse I could think of to miss meetings and not go out knocking doors, but was just considered 'weak'. There was no internet support in those days and I wasn't even aware that there were other JWs who felt the same way I did.

Like knitting!! It does not involve riotous celebrations or excessive risk taking, and ticks all the right JW boxes.

I wish JW's would stay home when they are sick!

as some of you know my husband got pneumonia on the way down to lake tahoe and wound up in the hospital.

we have not been around anyone that was sick nor did he seem to have a cold he just got pneumonia.

i had, had surgery for hernias amost three weeks ago but i doubt that gave him exposure to pneumonia.. well out of the blue while i was in tahoe a older sister called me and told me one of the elders had bronchitis really bad.

Back in the 1960s, it was the unquestioned rule that as long as we could actually stand up we felt obligated to attend all the meetings and assemblies however ill we were. People would literally drag themselves up off their sick beds to attend.

I used to hate the disease ridden meetings and assemblies, especially in the winter months as I knew if there was someone there sneezing their heads off (as there frequently was) I would be in bed the following week with a bad cold and asthma which would develop into bronchitis or pneumonia. It happened every year without fail! One year after repeated visits to the doctor and yet another prescription for penicillin I remember my doctor pleading with my mom to keep me away from "hot crowded environments" as I kept being reinfected and my health just couldn't take it. Of course as soon as I was well enough, I would be there at the next meeting being sneezed and coughed on all over again.

My health has improved greatly since I stopped going to those virus infested boasting sessions 20 odd years ago thank goodness, although the constant infections of my youth has left me having to take permanent medication.

Comments like the one made by fairplay 105 make my blood boil. Sorry because I know you are new and welcome to the board by the way, but it is the truth. I can only think that by making such a comment you have never suffered from a low immunity system. If I am in a shop where someone is obviously ill, I hold my breath and walk past them as soon as possible so as not to breathe in their germs. You can't do that when you are forced to sit by someone coughing and spluttering in a stuffy meeting hall for two hours!!

Was there a clique in your congregation?

Just about every congregation I have known has had cliques. When we first started going to meetings when I was a teenager this was made worse by the fact my parents would only allow me to have 'upbuilding, spiritual' association which was mostly the very cliquey and bitchy elders' daughters who did not like me as I was reasonably good looking and therefore unwelcome competition. My mom found out years later by chance how badly I had been treated on one particular occasion and was very upset about it.

Another congregation we went to when I had a young baby was just about as bad. There were a couple of lovely sisters (just humble publishers) I could call friends but most of the others (mainly elders and MS wives) were so engrossed in their clique they didn't even notice when I was ill and in need of some support. That congregation also had a strong male clique, which my husband was offered the dubious privilege of joining but he chose not to suck up to them, they were so pompous and full of themselves it was sickening. They were like a bunch of schoolboys the way they treated hubby because he didn't join their little gang, and punished him by not giving him 'priviledges' at the meetings

I could go on and on with my bad experiences involving JW cliques

what religion are you now?

its been a while since ive been on how is everyone doing?

but just curious after you left jehovahs witnesses did you look into other religions?

or are any of you currently involved in any other religions now?.

Like 30 years out I am also drawn towards Wicca (though not practising as this would freak out my JW relatives big time) but my 'religion' is feeling at one with nature, hugging trees, got a garden full of wind chimes and I listen to Wicca songs and New Age music
