  that's the facebook message i just got from one of my friends on facebook that is studying ..she was raised a jw but the family left for years.

  her mom (widowed) is now back in and is trying to get her 35 year old daughter now staying with her to come in by telling her how she wil lbe destroyed if she doesn't..same old love.. snoozy.

  Wrong. I am an anesthesia provider and I can tell you for a fact that blood transfusions, per unit, are a little less than $500 per unit depending on type, be it packed red blood cells, platelets, or fresh frozen plasma. Surgeons and anesthesia providers do not use blood products as a crutch...the risks are possible but are very rare and usually involve an antibody reaction. Blood products are necessary to have on standby for major surgeries, especially ones involving highly vascular organs, like the liver or spleen.
  
  Your claim of 25 units of blood for a major surgery are a stretch. The last time we transfused that much was for a multiple gunshot wound months ago. And we get plenty of those on a regular basis. We can do a liver transplant with less than 5 units of packed red blood cells. EPO is not a blood substitue; it enhances blood production and is not effective during surgery. Hospitals LOSE money on blood transfusions secondary to cost of having staff supply them, test, and make ready those transfusions. Blood substitutes, such as LR, D5W, and NS do not carry oxygen, which is why we give blood.

The study you (Jehovah's Witness Watchtower troll) cited is a retrospective study involving numerous other medications that impair healing, especially bone healing in the cases involving Toradol as a pain adjunct. The few studies, all retrospective, provide no empirical evidence for change of practice regarding blood product transfusion. This is cited in the implications of the data in all studies.
  
  The risk of transfusion reaction or infection is approximately 1:200,000, and varies with virulent strains and antibody type. In all, adverse reactions are very rare. Statistics are not "alarming" as you propose.
