Sab, straight question.... Are you high right now? I'm NOT judging or giving you shit, I really am curious. You're kinda writing in riddles and I'm not sure what to make of it. Maybe I haven't been paying attention on JWN since I came back.

I completely agree. Seems to me that when we recognize and accept that bias affects judgment - our own - the next logical step is to figure out how to suppress bias so that we demonstrate better judgment. (Of course, this is assuming the goal is truth, not just peace.)

Personally, I came to hold science in high regard only after I learned the importance of critical thinking the hard way - my experience of being easily misled for so long without it. Then it occurred to me that the scientific method was a form of critical thinking in practice. Critical thinking is it's very foundation. It addressed our inherent biases, it was unfeeling, unconcerned with cherished beliefs. It demanded consistent scrutiny.

I've yet to see such a guantlet for religious concepts.

it does not bother me one bit.

i didnt have it stamped in that shitty reasoning book/babel that i got at the time, so i guess the only place i could find it would be my cards, which are far away..

I don't believe that once you break away from your overlord that the Bible turns to ash, in fact I think that's lazy thinking.

I might use the term intellectually honest over intellectually lazy but to each, his own.

Why would I cut the Bible more slack than any other holy book if not for bias?

Intellectual integrity demands consistency in the intellectual standards we apply, so that we hold ourselves to the same demanding standards of evidence and proof as we hold our antagonists. It means we practice what we preach... that we try to find and eliminate discrepancies and inconsistencies in our own thought and action.

So once we break away from our overlord, do we apply the same scrutiny to El Bibel as we do to the Quran? Or do we excuse the Quran or offer it the same benefit of "presumed mysticism" as we do El Bibel?

To stand back and say, "Okay, I need to drop my old presuppositions and start over fresh from a neutral position," is a far cry from intellectually lazy. That's my opinion, at least.

This has probably already been said but I'll throw it out there:

The goal is to find truth, right? I'd offer that you first need to identify a solid method to separate fact from fiction. Develop your critical thinking skills first, then go on the attack. Learn how to spot fallacious reasoning. Question everything.

If your intentions are pure and Jehovah's Witnesses really do have a monopoly on truth, then you'll wind up back there and your faith will be more solid than ever. But don't make the mistake of contorting everything you see to fit a foregone conclusion.

Learn critical thinking, release all of your childhood presuppositions, start with slate as blank as possible, and follow the evidence wherever it leads.

I Was Offered A Bible Study By The Elders

2 elders, the cobe and his sidekick, a former bethelite and a young ms (elder in waiting) stopped by my mom's home while i was visiting with her.

they were very congenial and eventually asked me if i got invited to the memorial and whether they could arrange a future visit with me and a possible study.

i thanked them and told them i appreciated their invitation but that i was going to "pass at this time" but thanked them for their concern.. they recited a "wonderful experience" about a young man that was raised in the "truth" but wanted out so he decided to go to asia where he could not be found by witnesses.
