Ghosts and Spirits

i've been watching the bio channel lately and hearing people relate their stories of ghosts and the supernatural.. although i think some people do experience demonic presences, i think some people (for whatever reason) find it difficult to move on.

jws believe everything is caused by "demons," but there are many near death experiences where people clearly seem to see family members who have helped them and who have manifested themselves with feelings of peace and serenity.

since i don't believe that satan can duplicate these feelings of well being, i was wondering what you think of such manifestations, good or bad.. also, have you ever had any experiences, again, good or bad, in your lives?

C'mon, Joey, I'm just trying to reason with you. If I'm being too skeptical does that mean you believe the J.Smith/Moroni/golden plates/11 witnesses/Book of Mormon story is true? All I'm doing is trying to be consistent in scrutinizing outrageous claims. In post 134, you balk at some paranormal claims and accept others. What consistent criteria do you apply before you accept a supernatural explanation for an unexplained event?

So when you were a kid you were at a bookstudy and after it ended, everyone walked outside and witnessed a possessed broom thrashing the chickens, and then someone performed an exorcism in which they offered it food? I'm just curious how old you were at the time.

Around 15 people saw that, now what makes you so sure the me and everyone else perceives these spirit encounters?

Well, first, I wouldn't be questioning the perception of 15 eye witnesses, I'd be questioning the memory of a perception of one person who claims he shared the same perception with 14 others many years ago. Right now I only have the testimony of one person, not 15. And since I don't know you personally, it would be ridiculous for me to just accept your word, right? I mean you acknowledge all that other stuff is ridiculous but you expect me to take your word that you witnessed a broom chase chickens around the yard? Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

And yet if I should take your word at face value on something so fantastic, I should also accept Joseph Smith's claims about the book of mormon since there were supposedly 11 witnesses to the golden plates. Now what makes you so sure Joseph Smith and everyone else didn't really see the golden plates from whence came the Book of Mormon?

Aside from that, please re-read your question above. Everything we sense via sight, sound, touch, etc.. is a perception, is it not? So even if the real cause of the thrashing broomstick was, in fact, an angry demon who was pissed at the chickens... it was still a perception. So my question isn't whether or not you perceived it but, specifically, how do you know that your perception was unquestionably caused by a demon? Explanations for unexplained or inexplicable events - that's where I have an issue.

BTW, did you offer him some food to calm him down?

Yiz, no offense, but this feels like arguing with JW family. Reason and logic fly out the window because magical powers can be used to fix anything.

But what if we take away the blinding presupposition that caused us to accept the bible in the first place? Maybe then we will see the self-refuting contradictions for what they are.

Quick example:

God is perfect... meaning he is complete and needs nothing

BUT

God yearns to be praised, demands to be loved, and is jealous

That is a contradiction in terms. Yahweh, by definition, cannot be perfect.

Based on the old thread in which you quote me above.... to my knowledge, there's no evidence against the existence of a spirit realm. But there also isn't any empirical evidence for it either. Are those unscientific statements?

But there is evidence against a global deluge. So, based on the evidence, how is my assertion that the global flood was a myth "unscientific"?

I can't state that a spirit realm is impossible but I can state that the god described in the bible is self-refuting, therefore cannot exist in those terms. Is that unscientific?

You mean they're not with God being basked with His love and their lives will be restored fully whole on the coming day of the resurrection?

That's correct, they're not. Because - among other reasons - the global flood story is a myth.

But even if the deluge was real, what's the basis for the above rhetoric?

There are numerous bible accounts of children being killed on account of being in the path of god's wrath. Take the flood myth, for example: Infants and children who drowned to death didn't get a choice. Is that justice?

I think my first question is WHY do those people believe such things to be reasonable?

Do you not agree that a Muslim's reason, though based on false presupposition, would still seem completely valid to him? Is there any way he might be able to identify the flaws in his reasoning (without, say, any significant knowledge of the bible or Christiantity)?
