  my people were on this continent first. I dont buy the bs land bridge theory because that is not what I have always heard. And yes there is scientific evidence to support what I am saying. We are definitely indigenous to this continent.

  the thing here is you cant throw salt in old wounds, you have to heal them. You cannot heal them if you cannot open your eyes and heart and admit that there is residual damage caused by the evils of the past. The higher proportion of men of color in prison, of people of color in poverty, is a direct result of the psycological damage that comes with being marginilized to the fringes of society. That marginilization is so complete now that we see these people as disposable, and it is quite sad.

  screw reparations! How about enforcing the treaties (i.e. legally binding contracts) that the US signed with Indian nations, treaties that are still being ignored or CHANGED unilaterally by the US govt to this day. Let's start with that.....can you say Cobel v Norton?

  You are wrong, the state of Florida has successfully prosecuted slavery cases in the last few years.

  The Seminole Tribal Fair is supposed to be awesome....I know lots of people that go. Too far for me. I am in NE, so the biggest one I go to is Schimetzen (the Peqout's green corn powwow). I have never seen so many ndns in one place at one time, it is amazing.

  You should check out the powwow at Moundville, AL. I know a ton of people that go to that one, for the past couple of years Ulali has been there. Plus that place is awesome.

  and I make pumpkin fry bread alot...and fried corn when I get nice corn in the summer. Ever had swap cabbage? that is nice too. mmmm mmm

  What do yout think about the powwows there? I am going to try to come to the big one they have up north of Atlanta, I think it is in Nov

  You cannot possibly think that the only ones who have suffered injury are the people who were actually held as slaves. Think about what the fact that they were kidnapped and taken from their homelands. The people that were taken were from all stations of life, all classes. Once they were on these shores they were property, they were bought and sold irregardless of any family ties that may have existed (husbands and wives seperated, children ripped from parents...)

  After the slaves were freed, they had to learn ways to make a living. They were not allowed to go to school. They were not given access to the jobs that paid well, or for that matter that took advantage of their skills. Up until 40 years ago, less than a generation, it was LEGAL to put up signs that said "NO BLACKS". They got to drink from the dirty water spicket instead of the sparkling clean faucet that stood right next to it. They were not allowed to eat at restaurants.

  Less than 40 years ago. You can go and find people who remember what it felt like to be treated that way, and it was legal, and you had to just take it.

  This whole site is dedicated to helping people get over the trauma of being involved in a cult-like religion. We sit here and share our stories, we validate the fact that we have been harmed and left behind the rest of the population because of what happened to us. Slavery, the Jim Crow laws that followed, and the residual bigotry and hatred that remain was a far worse trauma to have as a legacy. Please believe that this movement for reparations is more of a desperate attempt to do something....anything...to try and get people an even start than it ever was about greed.

  i always look for good websites for my students to view and since today is mlk day i was in search of a good one for them to look at this week.

  this one is from stanford university and has lots of documents, an interactive chronology, audio, quotes, etc... if the story of his life interests you then i highly recommend it.

  at the risk of casting pearls before swine....

  Dr. Martin Luther King held a PhD in Systematic Theology from Boston University.

  I refer to people by titles because it is the expected thing in polite society. I do not believe in organized religion.

  I do look up to the man and the work he accomplished, probably in the same way that I imagine you admire David Duke. I actually agree more with Malcom X and his idea of action. I do not believe it is right to love people who are evil assholes. They dont deserve it.

  COINTELPRO was (and still is) an organization run by our government for the purpose of infiltrating "dangerous groups". If they cannot find illegal activity, they discredit the leaders of the group so that they cannot challenge the authority of the government and status quo. That is where the information about Dr. King's alleged affair came from. After having worked closely with the American Indian Movement (another group that COINTEL is scared to death of), I would take any information that is generated by that agency with a HUGE grain of salt.

  Thank you for your racist, white supremist rantings. You are a prime example of what is wrong with this nation.

  I find it amazing that people can say ..."I think people should celebrate their differences" and then say "it isnt right that there are black only this or that".

  I also find it interesting that most people who say those sweeping generalized comments never attend so-called black-only (or hispanic only or indian only) events. They are open to everyone, and usually everyone is welcome.

  If your skin is light, you are in a club that you do not even realize that you belong to. That is why people of color have had to create their own things....to have a place of peace to be who they are. Not all of us want to be assimilated into some bland version of what an American is supposed to be. Some of us want to retain our heritage.

  And sister cry me a river about what your family-come-lately was promised. My family has lived on this continent for thousands of years, my people were promised things that were supposed to last as long as the rivers flowed, the grass grew, etc etc. That land your family was promised was stolen. If you are southern, there is a good chance you live on land that belonged to my ancestors. How much do you know about the history of the lands that your feet are planted on now?

  Race and class matter. Just because it is uncomfortable to hear about the past, and how our country was founded does not mean that we should not discuss it. We need to open a real dialogue about the economic and social consequences that ou nation faces today that are a direct result of our shared past, as it is the only way to really improve things.

  Wow, Tom Talley, gotta love COINTEL here in the US huh?

  You celebrate MLK day by taking a day ON instead of off, and volunteering and giving back to the community. That is Reverend King's message to us all, that all of us, even those of us who have the very least of all, are able to serve our communities to make them better.

  Although it seems you prefer to keep the status quo that our ruling elite have established by tearing down instead of building up. Keep believing everything the CIA says, if that is who you chose to believe.

  there were several different careers that the wts did not aprove of.

  such as a being a cop, for having a gun.

  couldn't be a martial arts instructor.. maybe it was a well paying career.. did you have a job that was not approved of?

  I was married to a guy from an island nation, and we lived there. In this particular nation very difficult for non-natives to get a job, even if you are married to a native. There used to be a Navy base there, so I went to work at the McDonalds on post, became a manager, all that. It was awesome because I got to be around Americans.....helped with the homesickness quite a bit.

  Even though I was working for a company that was a vendor to the Navy, I was told to quit. Even though finding a different job off-post would have pretty much been impossible. And even though we had two small kids and could hardly pay the bills with my paycheck. I didnt quit and we moved back to the States.

  It is important to remember that it happened, and talk about it.

  Look how many Americans do not know about the Holocuast(s) that happened on the very soil that they walk on every day! That is what happens when you don't talk about it!

  After all, one of Hitler's heros and role models was Andrew Jackson!
