joseph smith founded the church in 1830, 10 years after he claimed to experience a vision of god and jesus in a grove of trees near his family home in palmyra, n.y. he also said an angel named moroni led him to a set of buried gold plates that contained the ancient records of christ's dealings with the inhabitants of the americas.
smith's translation of the plates became known as the book of mormon, the text on which mormons base their religion.. smith's original church had just six members, mostly his family, and only 5,000 copies of the book of mormon were published at first.
he sent out a handful of missionaries.. today mormonism has more than 12 million members half of them outside the united states.

desperation.
the evidence mounted that your faith which you mistakenly built upon men, your entire spirituality, your life, was standing precariously high upon the wobbling foundation of an artfully contrived fraud.

Well Auldsoul,
I should have known that word, "better", would not escape your attention. Good to see you survived you coming out party last night.
Onesong,
I had a true certainty of who I was and what I was doing. I honor and celebrate all those brave enough to be themselves!
Salute to all who find the courage to be themselves. Thanks for the thought, Onesong.

after much deliberation, i decided to go "out" at the end of a public talk.
it didn't go down too well, but at least i was able to give some of my reasons for leaving.. i've put some of the details on my homepage.
i'll update it more when i get the time and the strength.
LT,
Tomorrow evening I give the short lecture part of a Christmas Watchnight service, especially for the kids, that's to be broadcast on the local radio. What a change from this time four years ago, when I was at the Elders' School, with my DA talk already on my mind!
You'd better believe I'm going to take the opportunity to mention the JWs

Narkissos,
What I remember is the sense of being unheard and unseen, like a ghost among the living (or the contrary).
I would say the contrary, but I remember how numb and lost I was. I'm not sure if I was fully alive or dead. Like limbo. This process is surprisingly slow because, as Belbab said, we have faucets of it still controling pockets of our soul years later. Still deprogramming, but at least I feel ALIVE now. Hope you are doing well, and the family too.
Yes, there is life after all.

Greendawn,
I liked that expression "artfully contrived fraud" it describes perfectly the nature of the FDS and their watchtower society. It's useful for those who think that the FDS is a well meaning though deceived group of people. They are far more sinister than that.
Yes it is contrived and sinister but many, even some in high places, are also duped. They didn't get in their possitions for being great thinkers, but for shutting down independent thinking and displaying loyalty. We at one time thought that was the right thing to do too.
The culpable supporters of this 'artfully contrived fraud' are the folks who saw what we saw or knew what we know and stayed in instead of 'speaking out'. Strangely, there are a lot at Bethel who haven't figured it out, but keep the contrivance in motion.
fullofdoubtnow,
You have been here almost two months. How's your doubts? Hope some are becoming new confictions. Nice to hear from you.
Prophecor,
It was a moment much like you described for me, Steve. I did not wan't to believe the truth about the truth. I panicked. I felt my entire world come to an end, overnight. I refused to believe at first. This was my dream, this was my only everything. That there was an earthly organised society of ones who knew who God was and knew exactly what he wanted from those who would serve him.
I like your way of expressing this. And the idea of an ORG who knew who God was and exactly what He wanted from us was a key part of the FRAUD. It would have been so wonderful to be true. Didn't we WANT to believe it. Thanks for you comments.

i know this is here somewhere but can't find it in 4000 pages of threads (no duh really) anyway my wife has made me promise not to go sunday... .
what i want is a scan or quote from the elders manual (shoveling the shit to the flock or whatever it's called) that says that someone who's not claiming to be a witness and doesn't recognize the elders authority should be left alone... i know it won't matter but i would really like to at least send something!
i'm going to give it to my mom to take to txx (elder) but she's going to be here at 3:30!!!!!
Mkr,
There was a time, I think in the 1980's, when the printed policy was to leave them alone if they hadn't attended meetings for 2 or 3 years and did not claim in the community to be a JW. I looked for the quote but could not find it quickly.
However, they do what they want know. If you make noise, or they just do not like you, it doesn't matter how long you have been away. They will even make the announcement without contacting you if they feel you have been gone long enough. They did this to my daughter after being away for about 3 years and they did it to Barbara Anderson after being away much longer.
They seem to be in a desperate "cover thy butt" mode as far as dealing with opposers. But I hope someone finds the quote just for your mother's sake.

Trevor,
Thanks, and yes, it is just a growth spurt and the process continues through life. Suffering for being true to ourselves is a process that may be experienced several times in life. To avoid it growth so as to avoid the pain is a bad choice for everyone.
Confession,
now do I see that "I was not of their sort"
I sympathize. In fact, the very minute (23-Dec-05 12:52) you posted the above to my thread I posted to your thread at http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/103681/1803772/post.ashx#1803772
You and I would have gotten along famously on an elder body, but that's probably why both of us left.
Where ever you are, we must have a direct energy connection of some sort?
Steve
so now that the entire midwestern region seems to know about this "confidential" judicial committee, i suppose it was time to get started with it.
we arranged to have both accusers come at specific times.
i ask, please, for your level-headed, thoughtful advice.
Interesting synchronicity took place here at 23-Dec-05 12:52

blood and the wts blunder machine.
since the inception of its infamous blood doctrine prohibiting jehovahs witnesses from accept blood products under pain of punitive congregational repercussion the wts has meticulously avoided use of the term transfusion in relation to any blood-based therapy permitted to jehovahs witnesses under its doctrine.
as the wts current blood doctrine has developed through the decades it has had to take ever increasing pains to avoid using the term transfusion in relation to blood and blood-based therapies jehovahs witnesses can accept because the wts has over the same period allowed more and more in the way of use of blood under its infamous doctrine.
Marvin,
WTS has again provided information that punishes any notion that Jehovah’s Witnesses abstain from any and all blood transfusions. What makes this blunder of the WTS even more incredible is that its 2001 instructions for US publishers contained a line item of language that completely debunked the notion that Jehovah’s Witnesses abstain from blood. That line item read:
“I accept all fractions derived from any primary components of blood.” (Underlining added)With that statement the WTS used language that in exactly so many words expressed the idea that a JW would be willing to literally accept all of all from blood, yet the WTS;continued wanting everyone to believe ;that JWs abstain from blood.
Big Oops for WT.
This thing is so convoluted, how long will they even try to defend it?
OH, yeah. The legal department. They are surely involved now.
