I'd say your Mom is feeling guilty for your having left the truth because when you were trying, she wasn't very supportive . Maybe your DF'd friend was teetering between going back or leaving for good and was bouncing things off of you.

Role Reversal: Placing 1969 Awake with JW's Manning the New Portable Literature Displays
by snapdragon4 inin recent weeks the jw’s here in the uk have been setting up their new portable watchtower literature displays in my local town square on a saturday morning.
as they hadn’t knocked on my door for at least five years, and consequently feeling somewhat neglected, i thought that i would pay them a visit instead.. .
the first thing i needed to do was arrange my literature.

Well done. You lived out a fantasy of mine. I have printed copies of these type of articles on the bookshelf in our entry hall at the ready.
I'd also like to print a stack of these and place them on all the windshields of the cars at the KH parking lot on meeting night or mail them anonymously to every JW I know.

I am amused by my new Job offer
by recovering ini have just been hired as the new clinical director for a large company.
i think the following email from them is hilarious.
they want me to basically define my duties by writing my own job description.

"Write your own job description so I can work off it" = I was told to write it but that's too much work. it's easier if you do it since I don't know all that much about it . I'll just tweak it a little and make it look like I know what I'm doing.
Fill out the credit applicaton = You will have a card to use for work related expenses.

You can't sell a poem about sunshine, only one about grey skies and rain,
cause' ones about happiness get tedious, to folks who think poems should have pain.
Though I've had my share of good times, things really weren't bad so it seems,
but a poem about that, would fall rather flat next to one that has nightmares and screams.
If I write a poem about high hopes and things that mostly went great,
to you I could tell it, but I never could sell it, most people just wouldn't relate.
I've been mislead, had a childhood of dread over things that never came true,
and spent my life waiting, never really relating, to people even some that I knew.
So that's why I'll write of and tell you the plight of, someone who's whole life was spent,
listening to others, called them sisters and brothers, but doesn't know where they all went.
No you can't sell a poem about sunshine, but there's one thing for sure we do share.
If we wrote down our stories, told the pain and the glories, we'd all surely be millionaires.

I get what your saying.....they aren't exactly putting their "money where their mouth is" in terms of the nearness of Armegeddon are they? But you can't blame them for wanting to improve their day to day life, especially when on some level they know based on past failures, the New System probably won't come in their lifetime, no matter what they might say outloud.
The thing is, there is risk of ones life involved in these procedures. We know a JW woman who had breast augmentation and ran into a snag over the blood issue. She didn't stop bleeding for several days after the surgery and her doctor was pressing her to take a transfusion. Fortunately the bleeding stopped but can you imagine losing your life over something like this or having to enlist the help of the Blood Liaison Committee about a surgery that maybe you didn't particularly want anyone to know about ?
I think they figure that in the New System, Jehovah will remove their implants the same way he'll remove the hip implants, heart valves and dental work that others have had done. I always wondered what people with Dentures will do while their teeth are growing back ? After surviving an event like Armegeddon and the Tribulation, I suppose they figure this would be the least of their worries.

This is a nice story even though it has a sad ending. I know a JW who had this posted on their facebook and the comments left were about Jehovah's blessings etc.
My non JW Aunt and Uncle were a perfect match and were married very young and worked side by side for almost 60 years. She passed away and was buried on a Saturday and he passed away a day later and was laid to rest next to her the following Saturday. He literally fell apart within a few hours without her, which shows you how much ones mental outlook affects ones physical well being. Although they beleive the two are reunited in heaven now, this was really hard for my Cousins to take and the preperations were quite overwhelming. I imagine this couple's family may be going throught the same thing.

I was born to this world not a moment too soon, for paradise was near, I'd be spared comming doom.
They said I was a sinner, was born weak and bad, even though I was only, a wee little lad.
I wasn't a liar, I did no one harm, but I always felt lacking, others twisting my arm.
My Father too listened, thought it kinda' made sense, they said God would soon kill him, cause' he sat on the fence.
I tossed and I turned at night in my bed, with fear of tribulation and torture and dread.
I wanted to live and make this God glad, but how could I love the one, who would kill my own Dad?
I grew up so worried, the sparkle of youth was rubbed off, they taught me to judge they taught me to scoff.
But as I grew older I learned to be true, to that little boys voice cause' somehow he knew,
one day I'd discover, what I'd known all along, the things they had taught me as truth, were quite wrong.
At first I was angry, sort of lost and afraid, cause' where would I go, if from them I strayed?
Their backs they have turned now, though I've done nothing wrong, I've discovered first hand what it means to be strong.
I'm learnng new skills and I finally do see, that it's never too late to set your mind free.

JW prayers
by Laika inlisten, i know many of you saw the word 'prayer' in the thread title and are just itching to write a post about how prayer never works, sorry to disappoint, but whether or not prayer works is not the point of this post.. jws do believe that prayer works, and as such, what they tend to pray about is, i think, quite revealing about their general attitudes toward other people.. i have heard thousands of public prayers by jws, some of you may have heard tens of thousands.
i obviously cannot remember them all, but my experience tells me that never, or at least rarely (i guess there are always exceptions to the rule) would a jw pray for the solution of a general problem such as asking jehovah to help the homeless, asking jehovah to bring peace in a wartorn country, or asking jehovah to bring about fairness to the oppressed, except as such problems may effect other jws, or except by means of 'the kingdom', which is supposed to solve said problems by wiping out all those suffering them.
they may pray for direct help for members of the congregation going through major problems, but i rarely hear a jw offer to say a personal prayer for someone going through a hard time.

I have heard JW's pray for the Brothers and Sisters where the preaching work is under ban or where persecution is going on but never for the general population or other Christians who may also be suffering. The difference I see between local Chruch members and the local JW Congragations I've attended is that JW's, to my knowledge, won't rally together on a local level to get support for injustices or aid to Congragation members that are in some sort of trouble.
For example. Locally there was an elderly man (non JW) who went on a photography trip to Mexico with his Teenage Grandson, they both were into photography. They apparently were taking random photos everywhere they stopped. While at a shop in a small village picking up some snacks, they photographed the Mexican girl who was working behind the counter. On their way out of town, the local Police stopped them and accused them of taking illegal photos of minors and threw them in the local jail. The were to be held until they either paid a hefty fine or until a trial could be held and apparently that can take up to a year. The Grandfather was in need of his medications and the local authorities wouldn't allow him any medical treatment. The Grandfather attended a Church here in our area. The local Church members organized a public rally to raise funds to help him and they went to the media and the State Governor and Senator to bring attention to this case and demand help, which they received. The attention this case received from the media and U.S Government officials embarrased/convinced the Mexican officials to let the two travelers go.
If I were in the same situation when I was a JW, I can't imagine the Elders or local congragation members knowing what to do or even feeling the need to come to my aid. The last thing they'd want to do is bring any attention to themselves by going to the media. (mush't kick up a fuss in case it might shed a bad light on the organization). Nor do I think any one of them would organize a public fund raising or even know the process for enlisting the help of the Governor or Senator. They'd probably hesitate to do anything without first running it by Brooklyn and Brooklyn would probably tell them not to get involved. I could be wrong but after being a lifelong JW my sense is you'd be on your own unless this had something to do with the ministry. A prayer is probably all you'd get and it wouldn't be a public one from the platform.
