  Are Men As "Manly" As They Used To Be?

  maybe it's me but i see more males act less "manly".

  I have noticed that many of the women going around these days look like men...and ugly ones at that. Yeeeesh ! Big square bulky bodies, thick necks, short hair and Fred Flintstone feet. They wear tight shirts that show the rolls on their stomachs and shorts to show off their wide behinds and big legs. They are often tattooed loud and tough as well. I often wonder how these women would have looked if they lived in the days when women wore long dresses and feminine clothes....they might still look like heffers but at least they'd have been covered up.

  Men, especially fathers, are portrayed on TV and in movies as immature bafoons or naughty little boys trying to hide their blunders from their wise cracking wives and their know it all children who all the while belittle them and boss them around. If Women or some Minority group were portrayed in this fashion, there would be a revolt. The theme of many talk shows seems to be "Men bad...Women good" or " How to make your man to be more like you and then despise him when it happens"

  Most men are too busy trying to keep the show on the road or have broad enough shoulders to even let it matter to them...so on it goes.

  Maybe the end is near after all......for men ?

  Michael Jackson---What Was Your Opinion Of Him?

  a year ago, mj suddenly died.

  for years, multitudes of people said michael jackson was a "sicko" a "wacko", a "child molester" and an "addict".. once he died, the man was glorified by people, the media and his family.. what did you think about michael?.....personally, i thought he was an eccentric ultra-gifted artist who was childlike and brilliant.

  i was never convinced that he was a child molester but i will say i thought his behavior was "weird" with kids (and adults)..

  The difference between being weird and being eccentric is how in many zeros you have at the end of your bank account balance.

  Michael Jackson was ruined by fame...but he was wealthy....so he survived for a while.

  i wonder if the original word or term that was written in the scrolls had the same meaning or definition as our word "generation" and how would if effect their current prophesy ?

  do other translations of the bible besides the new world translation use the word generation ?.

  Thanks for the comment....interesting stuff. I'm going to look up the scriptures you sited when I get a little time. I would like to look at other translations of the bible to see what word they used if any, in place of the word Generation.

  If they are going to us an English word like generation...then why not use it's English definition as well rather than assign it a definition from Bible times?

  The term Apostate is their word to villify anyone who dares to disagree with them. It has no valitidy or significance outside their organization and no relevance to anyone here.

  Apostasy

  1: renunciation of a religious faith
  2: abandonment of a previous loyalty

  Everyone who belonged to another religion before being a Witness was an apostate, including the founder of the religion C.T. Russell....but that was OK in their book.

  The Jehovahs Witness family weekend

  having been out of the organisation for over 4 years and having finally released my kids from the hellish existance that is life as a jw, it struck me today how enjoyable our weekends are in comparison to when we were jw's.. the weekends are vital for us just now.

  my wife doesn't work but i work full time from very early in the morning.

  i don't get to see my beutiful children in the morning during the week.

  Speaking of Generalities.... Certain generalities / blanket statements when accepted by a group can be a source of much distress for those who don't agree with them or can't concienciously comform to them and yet are more or less forced to comply. Often this includes children.

  Children need a lot of structure in their lives : Or : Children need a certain amount of structure in their lives. Too much structure has been found to inhibit creativity and personal development and the ability to cope in the many non structured environments encountered in daily life.

  Jewish children went to the temple with their parents as much as we Witnesses do: Or : We don't know how many times a week or the exact number of hours Jewish children and their parents spent in the temple as compared to Witness meeting attendance. When they did go they most likely heard the word of God read directly from the scrolls. It is very unlikely that they were subjected to the continuous studying of man made publications containing often inacurate interpretations of God's word and key concepts that need to be relearned once the mistakes are corrected . They likely didn't spend week after week, year after year sitting through and participating in magazine sales demonstrations at the temple or were taugnt how to overcome objections made by those not wanting those publications.

  People leave it to school now to teach this type of structured setting : or: Some people today leave it up to the school system to teach their children in a structured setting since this is often how learning occurs in public schools. Other parents and educators have found that childern/people can learn equally well in a variety of settings. Some children learn much better in a non structured setting such as home schooling, study groups, or with hands on practicle day to day guidance from parents,relatives and instructors.

  Thanks for the input but in my opinion your argument offers little of the objectivness you mention.

  You compare Witness kids who are answering freely, enjoying the meetings and outings afterward, to non Witnesses who park their kids in front of the computer or leave them at babysitters screaming. That's the ol' "Witnesses good....all non Witnesses bad " programming at it's finest. So far the experiences posetd have been in regard to individuals own personal experiences in managing their families while keeping up with the busy scedule of a Witness. No one said it was the same for every Witness family although there have been many articles written in the literature addressing this particular challenge of Witness life so it must be a reality for many. Although the admonition from the Society regarding meeting attendance has always been " Do not forsake the gathering of yourselves together, but do it all the more so as you behold the day drawing near" the bookstudy arrangement has been dropped which goes against what the scriptures say and what they've always admonished but it has lightened the load of every Witness family.

  P.S. Plenty of Witnesses own computer games and often leave their kids at babysitters when Mom and Dad need a break.

  Also...plenty of the kids answering don't know what they are talking about and haven't been allowed to look at any other information before formulating their beliefs.

  Remember, for most families, its not only the time spent at the actual meetings but also the time spent in getting their kids prepared for, dressed up, traveling to and from the meetings. You are made to feel you are making all the effort to please Jehovah when much of what is required was decided upon by a group of men who live in an instutution in New York in an altered state of reality far removed from the real world most of us move around in.

  I enjoyed the picture of your weekend with the family. My boys are grown now but I cherish the Saturday mornings when they'd both crawl in bed with us and discuss all the things on their minds. They did this even when they were big strapping lads in their late teens. We never made them go out in Service. I felt guilty about it at the time but it never stopped me. I grew up as a Witness and didn't want my kids to be forced into doing things they didn't fully understand or secretly didn't want to do. I did however have them sitting through meetings and those long assemblies wearing suits and ties since they were toddlers. We never understood the need for this but we went along with it. Looking back I realize it was part of the Societies "image" conciousness. Wanting to impress onlookers with an outward appearance that lent them more credibility to the organization I suppose.

  You are so right when you realize how quickly their childhoods go by. If you are the father you seem to be and are reasonable with the kids as they get older, and don't shame or punish them for saying outloud what they really feel, you shoudn't have any troube getting through the teen years. Guilt and hiding secrets does so much damage. So many of our friends who did all the things that the society recommended or reqired had big problems with their kids later. One day they were at the meeting and the next they'd have flown the coop and had wound up in some crazy situations.We let our boys be on the school teams and go to the dances ( one was Homecomming King) and I always did a little someting special on their birthday. We didn't advertize any of this because for obvious reasons, but today our boys have their heads screwed on straight and have a mixture of "worldly and Witness " friends and have chosen their own path. One son still attends and is regular in service and that's fine with me. They tell me that of the two groups, the Witness kids tend to be the most seriously screwed up. They have seen binge drinking and use of drugs at Witness gatherings wheras the other group don't seem to be as over the top about this. Which is the opposite of what we were always told.

  To this day I still am elated that I don't have to come home from work, get cleaned up, put on a suit and tie and sit through the same old format of the meetings. Toward the end they had begun to feel more like attending a funeral to me rather than the refreshment of spirit they claimed them to be. Too much time dwelling on how right they are and how wrong other religions are. The steady diet of doom and gloom, dire warnings, overcomming objections and the heaping on of more "works" took its toll on my well being.

  "you get what you pay for"?.

  a couple of years ago i bought a lawnboy mower for $750.

  i probably only used it a dozen times since i'm not really big on yardwork.

  It may be time to bring in one of the other sheep to take care of your lawn !
