Why Rational People Buy Into Conspiracy Theories?

my wife is taking a literature course at a local college.

this was her final topic of the semester: why rational people buy into conspiracy theories?i automatically thought of this site and of jws.

the jws i knew, were the kind of people that would believe in conspiracy theories, and i noticed a small following on this site.. the article that was referenced for this course was: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/26/magazine/why-rational-people-buy-into-conspiracy-theories.html?_r=0.

I think there are a few keys to this. One is the feeling of superiority. Knowing what other people don't know. Some people just love to feel superior to others.

Also there is the delusion of thinking there is some sort of control over everything that happens. I heard people giving off comments about the attack in Paris being a "hoax" after only an hour when no official story on it had even come out. Maybe it's a feeling of security knowing there is a secret meaning behind all of this stuff and there aren't crazy people who would just go out and murder people.

with all the surprises that were delivered around the nfl tuesday, jason worilds has pulled another.

the steelers free agent linebacker announced early this morning that he was leaving football.. and the steelers believe he means it.. steelers sources told the post-gazette today that they believe worilds, who became an unrestricted free agent on tuesday, is serious about walking away from football at the age of 27 to work for his religion, jehovahs witnesses, and that there is no hidden agenda involved in his decision.. i appreciate all of the interest from the organizations that have reached out to us the past few days, worilds wrote on twitter.

and yahweh and jesus don't seem to mind, they arn't hurling fire and brimstone or making it flood everywhere.

life goes on as normal, people are, "eating and drinking, men are marrying men and women are being given to other women, just as they have been doing in many places on this globe for as long as humans have been on the earth.

Even when I was a believer I used to think it should be legal. It doesn't affect my life so why should I care? Heck, even my uber dub mom thought the same way.

an oregon bakery that refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex marriage has lost its appeal..... the judge has ordered 'sweet cakes by melissa' to pay $150 000 damages to rachel and laurel bowman-cryer.. discrimination is illegal, and religious superstition is not an excuse.

how long before jws land in court under similar circumstances?.

On one hand if I were being gay married and they refused to make a cake I'd be more than happy to take my business elsewhere

On the other IT'S A FRIGGIN CAKE. JUST BAKE THE FRIGGIN CAKE. I can understand if you are a priest or something and you don't want to perform the wedding but IT'S A CAKE. YOU AREN'T ACTUALLY MARRYING THE PEOPLE

American Sniper - courage or cowardice?

the movie american sniper is breaking box office records and of course there is some irony that a movie about a sniper is released on martin luther king day (who was shot by one).. but of course there is a world of difference between an assassin and a military sniper ... or is there?.

some are making a big stink about it and claiming that "snipers are cowards".

it seems unfair to me.

I've found that most of the people who don't like the movie just don't like Chris Kyle. I have also found that people project their particular views of the war on the movie. I wish they had focused more on the PTSD aspect a little more especially after his last tour.

Consequences of staying on the recommended Hotel list

i wanted to share an experience i had and see if anyone else had encountered this same matter.

we always tried to make an extra effort to ensure we stood on the approved hotel lists when going to our special day conventions or district conventions or what they now call regional.

we use to stay many nights a year and i would save up my hotel points to use at a later time.. i remember checking in at popular chain hotel and asked the hotel clerk how many points would i earn for the 3 night stay?

The people closest to the Presiding Overseer were always the ones to get first glance at the list of hotels. So we typically got stuck with the cruddy hotels 45 minutes away.
