If the government passed a law(s) against polygamy in America and the Supreme Court held that a Mormon could not practice polygamy in America in REYNOLDS v. U.S., 98 U.S. 145 (1878), why can't the government pass a law adding additional requirements for organizations to meet to gain tax exempt status. According to IRS Publications 557 and 1828 , the IRS maintains basic guidelines to determine whether an organization meets the religious purposes test of section 501(c)(3) “that the practices and rituals associated with the organization’s religious belief or creed are not illegal or contrary to clearly defined public policy”.

This petition would make it very clear that intimidating and coercing members is against public polciy and does not require that people believe in freedom of religion or speech. It only requires that tax exempt organizations promote freedom of religion and speech to their members. This petition would not allow an organization to use coercion and intimidation to control how its members think and express themselves. Members of an organization would be free to file a complaint with the IRS to investigate their organization (or former organization). If the IRS held for the members who complained, then that organization would lose its tax exempt status and could continue to intimidate its members without being financially supported by the government.

If any of the people who are against this petition are afraid it would be abused by extremist religions to attack other religions or the government to silence a religion, then I would say get involved in the political process when politicians are drafting a law. There is no way that this petition could silence a religion that cared about its members and its members believed in that religion.

Disillusioned Lost-Lamb - I feel rather socially inept when it comes to anything/anyone outside my job and/or the $ociety.
And don't even get me started on interacting with, GASP, the opposite sex.

Hi Disillusioned Lost-Lamb, So what issues do you have talking with the opposite sex? Are you male or female? If you feel that you are socially inept, have you considered making a plan to become a social butterfly?

New Chapter - Where is Paul Grundy from? I thought it was UK or something. I could be wrong. But just understanding the constitution, I can't see this getting any traction.

Steven Unthank, Paul Grundy, and Barbara Anderson have all agreed to post links on their websites. You will have to ask them whether they endorse this petition, whether they feel that the petition process will help to educate politicians and Americans about dangerous cults, or how they feel about this petition.

New Chapter - Look, we all have the same goal here. But the means do matter.

I am confused by your posts as to what your goals are and what matters to you. What is your goal? Is petitioning the White House illegal? (NO) Does this petition propose violating the Constitution or any law? (NO) Are you saying that you trust religious leaders more than democratically elected politicians as Band on the Run wrote in a thread? Do you know that most religious leaders are not elected by their members in popular elections and that history is full of examples of religious leaders persecuting and killing their own members?

I feel that you prefer to make sensationalistic and unrelated statements as if they were fact instead of having a dialogue with other posters.

This petition is a good way to educate politicians and Americans about dangerous cults, how dangerous cults harm their members, to encourage politicians' to create bill(s), for policitians to debate the bills, for constituents of politicians to send their politicians their comments, and then for politicians to vote on the bill(s). It is not the only way, but it is the way I chose to try. If you came up with a workable and good idea to help JWs and other victims of dangerous cults, I would probably encourage you to try it and might even help you.

Band on the Run - Do you notice that people approve of your goal but not the mechanism? I don't know why a third thread was necessary when the same info was posted on two very recent threads. Starting new threads seems a way of enforcing your will.

hello all, i've just discovered this site and i cant begin to describe how happy i am to have come across it.

i stumbled across this site purely by accident...seriously i was looking at arkham city walkthoughs and a few jumps later i end up here.

i though it was a legit society page at first and thought 'what the hell, this will be good for a laugh', but after reading a few posts well...i couldnt stop reading.

JeffT - Do you believe that a religious or other charitable organization is within its rights to resrict its membership to those that agree with its teachings?

Hi JeffT, What is your point? Yes, I believe that charitable organizations can restrict its membership. Would it be in an organization's best interest? Probably not. Should an organization be allowed to use ooercion and intimidation, such as shunning, to trap their members to blindly follow what the leaders of an organization want? DEFINATELY NOT!!!

for everyone who has responded so far. I'm curious why no one has asked anyone else in this thread a question about their experiences or opinion.

Chemical Emotions - SOCIAL F'ING RETARD.

For example, I would like to ask Chemical Emotions was this because of WTBTS doctrines or how her parents raised her and interpreted those doctrines.

clearpoison - In my view I got very positive social education in congregation. Being that very shy and direct boy could really have halted my social experiences. But holding rehearseal speeches and been more or less forced to communicate with lots of different people and not forgetting to mention going to doors of total strangers helped me to cope with this aspect of life. I am not saying that I would be cured, I'm still shy and cautious but I can freely engage in any kind of discussion even with people I do not not, or when there is need to conduct small talk for example in work related events.
What the schools could learn young people in this area is really minimal fraction of what would really be needed, not all people are social and outgoing by default.
