a SIMPLE answer re: 607 please
by RayPublisher ini know it's a complicated topic, and i've spent gobs and gobs of hours studying it and realizing that 586/587 is the most likely date.
so anyway, here's my question:.
how could jerusalem's fall be 587 but still be in line with the scriptures about 70 years of desolation that the wto uses to push 607 so strongly?

The WT cleverly substitutes the word "servitude" with the word "desolation" whenever attempting to justify their erroneous chronology (as if these could be used interchangeably when discussing the 70-year period)... The fact is that the desolation (of any of the nations serving the king of Babylon) only resulted from not having submitted to the 70 years of servitude... For example, Judah stopped serving Babylon after about 20 years and suffered the consequence of becoming desolate for the remaining 70 years of that servitude... It's as simple as that.

by Alfred ini have a jw nephew in another state who was at very the top of his high school senior class this year.
because of this, my sister (an elder's wife) had planned and sent out invitations to his "graduation party" which would be held at a community center with all the bells and whistles.
i actually bought plane tickets for my wife and i to attend this party immediately after receiving the invitation in the mail.

Thanks everyone... @leavingwt... I had time to think about it and you're right... I do need to ask the right questions and I only have one shot to get this right... @skeeter... I am almost certain he is going to college... Haven't confirmed it yet but he has brought up the subject a few times... I'm definitely monitoring this situation and will post something in a few months... Thanks again to all... Looking forward to more comments...

I have a JW nephew in another state who was at very the top of his high school senior class this year. Because of this, my sister (an elder's wife) had planned and sent out invitations to his "graduation party" which would be held at a community center with all the bells and whistles. I actually bought plane tickets for my wife and I to attend this party immediately after receiving the invitation in the mail. Now my nephew is the most wholesome, harmless and kind-hearted kid you will ever know. So this graduation party is well deserved and earned.
Unfortunately, his JW friend from his KH found out about this party and grew insanely jealous so he decided to expose my nephew on Facebook... What was my nephew's crime? He simply fell in love with a non-JW girl from his high school and he occasionally borrowed his father's car to go see her (while telling his elder father that he was going to his JW friend's home). Of course, my sister and her elder husband eventually found out about this unapproved relationship and immediately suspended his driving privileges and prohibited him from seeing her again while he lives under their roof... and as if that weren't enough, they also cancelled his graduation party!
I really hope this serves to wake up my nephew... he does have an analytical mind and I'm sure he has already given this a lot of thought. I think it's a matter of time before he figures it all out. In the meantime, I'm just going to wait for the right time and give him a call... I have a pretty good idea on how to "break the ice" with him but any ideas or advice on what to say to my nephew (if/when the appropriate opportunity presents itself) will be extremely welcome...
thanks...

Welcome JB... Sounds like he left the JWs because of something that happened to him personally (an incident or series of events) versus actually discovering for himself (through in-depth research) that it is just a big lie and a scam... You really need to ask him the right questions to find out exactly why he left. If he left for personal reasons (and not because he "woke up") then I'm afraid you're in for a very bumpy ride...

2011 District Convention "Let Us Be Bored and Confused Into Obedience"
by ranmac inthis has already been discussed but i need to vent.. i just spent the most painful weekend of my life sitting thru this years dc.
what an unbelievably pointless, soulless and demeaning spectacle the assemblies are.
the three days were a blur of monotanous droning and brainwashing.

Ranmac... I didn't go to the DC this summer (or the 2010 DC either)... Could you elaborate on what they said about the "clergy" helping the poor, building hospitals, etc.? Did they explain why these things amount to worship of society? I'm just curious to know what twisted reasoning they're using lately... Thanks...

SparrowAmongMany... Are you serious? How can you say that Watchtower publications are very similar to New Testament writings? Do you realize that Watchtower publications are littered with twisted reasoning, intentional deceit, false predictions and flat out lies? How can you possibly make such a statement?

Circuit Accounts Servants Confesses how the SCAM WORKS!!
by JT inyes, i too have wondered how an assembly that is held in a fully paid for assembly hall, with no food service, could possibly have $10,000 in expenses.
i suppose the bethel speakers have transportation expenses - maybe $1000 or so.
as for rent on the assembly hall, well you have already paid for it once, why pay again?

@Baltaar447...
good idea... also, I sense that there are some who have been out a while but still tend to give the WT the benefit of the doubt when it comes to money matters... so I'd like to share this anecdote...
In the early 90's, I was in a DC assisting the Accounts Servant count contribution money... well, I was really just sorting money, facing the dollar bills up, straigtening out the wrinkles and making perfectly shaped "bricks" after the money was counted. About 4 times a day, 10 or so brothers would show up with trash bags stuffed with cash. There was never enough table space to put all the money so it was usually just thrown on the floor where two of us would sort out the bills and hand them over to an elder who would count them (along with the accounts servants) and then we would prepare neat bricks for deposit.
Well one day, while two of us were on the floor in the "accounts room" sorting a mountain of cash, we all heard the "deficit" announcement that came from the platform. I can't remember the amount but I remember thinking "no way!"... we weren't even done sorting the 3rd pile of cash (with a 4th one still pending) and this guy actually announced a large deficit. I asked the accounts servant if that was true and he just looked at me with a defeated look on his face... like he wanted to say "no" but bit his tongue instead. Another elder, noticing the awkward silence, jumped in and changed the subject...
just thought I'd share that (for whatever this anecdote is worth)

MommaTossedMe... The money will come from their Hedge Funds and Dumbo Property sales as well as KH remodel loan interest payments and KH flips...not to mention the contributions at assemblies where they invariably claim "operating deficits" on the last day... Did I miss anything? Bottom line: They've got it pretty much covered...

By 1978 or so, it appears the WT figured out that Armageddon isn't coming at all... Since then, their entire focus has been on tightening control and building the business (rather than on the substance of their message).
