Aust. Election in 1 week - A review of Kevin Rudd, PM
by fulltimestudent ini'm still determined not to vote - just to write something unpleasant about pollies on the ballot paper.
if i lived in victoria, i just may, as an act of sheer bastardry, vote for julian assange (of wikileaks fame), but i don't live in vic, so i cant.. my objection to voting is that the political choice offers two self-perpetuating oligarchies (who are something like the governing body).
they make up a slate of candidates and election advertising consists of attempting to persuade swinging voters to vote for their slate of candidates.. anyway, i noted that k.rudd has made a video in chinese, aimed apparently at mainland china.

Krudd's put-down of a Pentecostal pastor on the topic of gay marriage:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v89vo3AHUkw
On the topic of the 'naturalness of slavery' it was a line of thought in antiquity. Aristotle, in his The Politics, argues that slaves were a sort of living piece of property and a tool.
And goes on in section I v to consider whether slavery is contrary to nature and concludes that some humans are slaves by nature. It is quite likely that this attitude colored the views of early Christians also - hence Paul's words.

You poms (aussie for Brits) are so lucky. Starting October 3, the British Museum has an exhibition of Shunga. "What's shunga?" you ask. "Shunga is sexual paradise, i.e. just like the depictions of paradisaical life in the WT, that enthralled us and enlivened our hope, so in the tightly controlled Tokugawa society, shunga provided release. A synonym was warai-e (laughing pictures), which sounds coy, until you learn that it also means masturbation.
The advertisement says,
Shunga - sex and pleasure in Japanese art
3 October 2013 – 5 January 2014
Parental guidance advisedSo don't take your ten y.o. son or daughter, unless your willing to provide detailed explanations of the feelings they will face shortly as they expoerience the physical sensations of puberty.

Now I'm not a JW, is it ok for me to...
by Julia Orwell in...drink a lot?
gosh i love wine.
i like a good bottle of wine each night, and i have a high tolerance to alcohol, though i never drank much (except for a couple of times with the vodka, but i don't keep that stuff in the house anymore, way too dangerous) as a jw because getting slightly happy is a 'sin'.

Dear Julia,
The JW organisation is very strange. OTOH some are very down on drinking, but OTOH there is a lot of heavy drinking.
I recall my shock when young, at one country circuit assembly, being sent with a message, after the final sunday afternoon talk, for the District Overseer (one Vince McNee at that time) and finding him and the Circuit Overseer (Ron Walters) knocking back a couple of bottles of beer. Not really very serious, was it, but not what I expected. I think Ron may still be going, though he could be dead. Vince Mc, a Queensland boy, former Catholic and raised in an catholic orphanage and as far as the JWs are concerned with a chequered career. Sent home from Gilead a couple of times, and finally on the out when his wife came home and found him saving water by showering together with his long time lover (as it turned out), a former Bethel boy.
And, I have an eye-witness account, from a long time witness in the Newcastle area, that before WW2 the brothers running the sales dept for the WTS owned radio station (2HD) in Newcastle, would entertain their business contacts with drinking parties in which they would finish up drunk to the point of being paralytic.
Still Nathan Knorr got out to Australia in 1945 (as soon as he could after wartime travel restrictions eased) and rooted out all those evil practises (grin). Though not quite.
Some 35-30 years ago the 2.I.C. at the Sydney branch, a David Madzay developed a serious, serious drinking problem. Nothing was said at Bethel (after all, just what is 'drunkeness?'), until he was picked up by the cops one night, and then the sh*t hit the fan. His drinking got worse, and one night he filled his kerosene heater bottle with petrol and blew himself and his small apartment up.
So Julia you can take your pick of what example to follow - grin.
Are you and your husband enjoying yourselves? And, its not affecting your health, is it?
So have another glass of wine, and say goodbye to the week's cares

Another problem with the Australian political scene is the ignorance of electors. Economics is a complex study and few people in the community can understand the issues. Yet economic statements by political parties requires a great deal of knowledge to critique them.
The problem is made worse by practises such as the Liberal-National parties refusal to release their proposed policy costings until its too late to analyse them. Why would they do that, if all the promises have been properly costed.
My guess is that it is impossible for them to do what they say they will do, that is, to reduce taxes, and at the same time increase benefits to the general community. So some promises will be broken and the excuse will be the same old excuse - the previous government was deceitful and had not accurately reported the true financial. Well that may be so, but in the end the financial reporting of the nation is supposedly in the hands of the impartial and independent Treasury, Finance Dept and Reserve Bank. They should be required to publish annual reports that are independent of the government. Butg I guess that is never going to happen, because western governments are not truly democratic and have little interest in reporting the truth to their theoretical masters (the people).
IF the topic matters to anyone (and, it should to Australians) read the Fairfax's Ross Gittin' opinion on Abbot' financial promises in todays Fairfax newspapers.
See: http://www.smh.com.au/business/why-taxes-would-rise-under-abbott-20130901-2sytp.html
So Tony Abbot's vote buying will be paid for in the end, by? Who else but the taxpayer. So these govt. programs are just a way of distributing income away from the thrifty and sensible to the wasteful, profligate and stupid.
Of course, the plain facts apply to the Labour side - will they also increase taxes? You bet, if buying votes is important to them!
BTW: I love Gittins' introductory sentence:
"Election campaigns have become works of fantasy where, to enter the spirit of things, you have to suspend disbelief. "
Yup! Political party promises are not different to the promises of the Governing Body (the JW one, or the Catholic one, or any) when they promise that if you work hard for them, then you will have a wonderful reward in the future.
BULLSH*T

No! Doofdaddy, I have a clear political stance against BOTH political parties.
But let's take Kevin first. I do not regard the posted videos as being anti-Kevin. The first one sends him up (and, it was made 8 years ago, when the political climate was quite different.
However, my objection to both parties is that both the ALP and the Lib-nats, foster a sense of entitlement among people. Let me illustrate - recently in our apartment block, there was a small group discussion. A single mother was talking about her problems, fair enough! being a single mother is not easy. Someone else pointed out that difficult times may be ahead of us, and that the government may be forced to cut welfare benefits. "Oh!" said the single mother, " whose going to support my children, then?" In the Australian community there is this expectation, that the government should provide.
It is illegal to give somone $10.00 to vote for you. But we have the situation, where electioneering political parties promise to give you thousands of dollars in some program or the other, if they are elected to office. As in Abbot's promise of 6 months (government) paid maternity leave when a woman has a baby at 50% of the normal salary. So a woman whose in a profession, earning $150,000 a year, will get a payment from the government of $75,000, or so it seems. But a lesser educated woman in Sydney's west earning $40,000 will only get $20,000. Something socially wrong in that, outside of the problem of the govt. paying those sums.
I have watched Abbott for the past 3 years. He's clearly in the ahnds of his image makers, going from the stance of a toey, punch drunk, amateur boxer to his new 'statesman' pose. Hockey is a fool. And the previously mentioned Christopher Pyne is like a noxious fox terrier.
Trouble is, fellow aussies - is the ALP really that much better. No wonder more than 30% of Australians express disappointment with democracy. Surely its not an example that the Chinese would want to follow.

Pastor Brian Houston, Senior Pastor of the Hillsong Church Franchise ( I think they are Pentecostal originally) hooked up all 100 (or so) churches in his franchise on Sunday August 18, 2013 and preached a sermon to his true believers:
My friend sent me some information about this sermon. This image was associated with details. Not sure whether Houston is up the end of this church somewhere in teh increasing (new??) light, but I guess that its typical of the gatherings, anyway.
For some reason ( not really explained) Houston and his church has woken up to the fact that gay people exist and are increasingly being seen as "respectable" enough to be considered as candidates for their congregations. (which is praiseworthy, although slightly snobbish). My GAY XJW friend and his partner are likely more respectable than most members of Houston's congregations and indeed even of my friend's former JW congegation).
On Sunday 18 August 2013, a sermon, 'Scandal of Grace' was broadcast to all Hillsong church campuses around the world. Below is the relevant extract.
"The one elephant in the room for churches around the world at the moment is the gay situation. What would Jesus do? What would Jesus do? You need to pray for church pastors and leaders around the world because whichever way you turn the scandal is there. You can turn one way and you can tell there would be a great scandal amongst the Christian Church. You can turn another way and you would just cut off so many people. There's lots of hatred out there but in the middle of it all you know there are three things: the world of the times we live in; the weight we live with; and the word we live by.
Think about that! The world has changed quickly. The world has changed and so I'm not saying that the church ever should be ruled by the way of the world but the reality is we are in a world which is changing fast. Here in Great Britain the laws have passed. The world is changing. We've got the world we live in to consider.
We've got the weight we live with. You say what's that? Well it's the weight when a young person growing up in a church feels like they are confused in their sexuality. They feel like "maybe I'm gay" and they go to a youth leader and they are rejected. At that moment a great hatred comes in. At that moment some of them have gone so far with the rejection and gone to parents who didn't understand and ended up committing suicide - That's the weight we live with.
There's the world we live in. There's the weight we live with and there's the word we live by. And they don't all necessary align. With the word we live by, many people have various convictions. In the middle of it all know that Jesus when it comes to people would let nothing stop Him from breaking through a divide to help hurting, broken, everyday normal people like you and I. -

The (ancient) globalised world - Ancient Israel imported cinnamon from India
by fulltimestudent inone of my specific interests (when i started at university) was the interconnectiveness of the ancient world.
and the more i've learned in the past 6 years, the more i've seen that the ancient euro/asian world was connected.
a network of trading routes and markets exchanged goods and wealth, and along with the traded items went traded ideas and concepts.

Thank you for posting your thoughts, HTBWI.
You asked what time frame? The report stated 3000 years ago.
Where? The report again made a point of saying that the area was then ancient Phoenicia.
If the dating is reasonably accurate, it is difficult to identify the source.

But sometimes, KRudd seems to get it right, as in this speech to students at Beijing University, where he makes a couple of funnies.
