I would say that in many of the instances of what you called a strawman, they are just assuming what they have yet to prove. So I would call that "begging the question," if I had to give it a label. But when we're talking about articles that are really meant for internal use, they're not going to continuously go back over teachings and doctrines as if their audience is unfamiliar or unaccepting of the idea being assumed. Nor would I expect them to. It's just that we (most of us on this forum) would find fault would some of those conclusions that the Watchtower just assumes because we are no longer willing to accept the arguments and basis for teachings that we once did.

In order for the Watchtower to be guilty of a strawman, they'd have to misrepresent someone else's argument. How did they do that?

After thinking about this some more, I think I probably was too sarcastic in my responses in this topic. I apologize.
JPMorgan why would I google who killed goliath. According to the way I was raised, it was David. I didnt need to look it up when I was asked this question. I ws never told of this other person who also killed Goliath. You know that oxygen is what humans breathe. Did you look it up on google? YOu have been told this your whole life. DUDE SERIOUSLY? why would you beleive that it is OXYGEN you breathe just because you grew up hearing that damn near everyday and was forced to accept this at face value? Was the internet available widely when you wer growing up? Hmm SERIOUSLY???
Ok, I deserve some of the angst expressed here. All I was trying to express is that if I was told something that bothered me, something that was different from what I was previously told, then I would absolutely verify what was being said with at least doing a google search. I would also dig deeper, evaulate the sources, and then make a decision. Believe me, there have been issues that have come up, and positions I've had to abandon that were once very important to me, and I didn't let go easily. But eventually I had to make the choice based on the evidence that I had.
Thanks,

@ Sulla
The thing that bothers me the most about these kinds of topics is that the 'struggling believer' goes out, reads a single book, and the matter's completely settled after that.
"Let's not bother with checking out the other side to these issues, the Bible must not be true, and God must not exist. Because I read a book. I'm going to watch Jersey Shore now!"

Absalom prefigured young JWs who fist bump, play video games, and take pictures of themselves with the opposite sex
by JimmyPage injehovah's witnesses top the list in not being able to hold on to their younger members.
so what do they do to combat this?
do they go out of their way to change things to keep the next generation, their only real hope of long run survival?

That's my impression of the most recent WT study which had an artist's rendition of an ordinary teenager doing ordinary things- fist bumping their friends, playing video games, and taking pictures of themselves with the opposite sex. This poor ordinary guy gets labelled a modern day "Absalom" and the WT conductor says the only answer for others around him is to "cut off all association with him".
Whoa. Which Watchtower is this? If this is true (and I'm sure it is, after seeing the picture), then they've alienated....everyone.... that I remember growing up with.

5 Reasons Why the DEAF Masturbation Video is different than anything before...
by BluePill2 inas some of you have noticed the asl video warning against masturbation (another guilt trip) is creating waves.
this is not small fry.
1. it is humorous - most topics (like other policies) are serious/depressing (blood, shunning, pedos).

rebel8,
The issue has nothing to do with ASL, never has, never will. I believe you're deliberately trying to not hear that.
Not sure if this was directed to only KS, or the both of us. I assume the latter.
If you post again, could you please clearly explain why this has nothing to do with ASL? Given that the deaf people here have stated that, linguistically speaking, the gestures themselves are right in line with what's considered the best ASL? That's what you primarily have a problem with, right? The graphic nature of the gestures?
You keep trying to pretend the only audience to this pantomime is ASL speakers, so we shouldn't be offended because they aren't (despite the fact that you've seen videos of offended ASL speakers protesting).
Again, not sure if this is directed to me or not. But I haven't "pretended" any such thing. I agree with you that the gestures are graphic and inappropriate. But a lot of deaf ASL users don't agree, they think it's just fine. I'll say it one more time: That's a problem you have with ASL, it says nothing about the Society.
And I can't understand what those deaf people are signing when you say they "object" in their videos. Are they objecting about the signs, or are they objecting about the Society's message?
It's on the www for all people who speak all languages can see the demo, so it doesn't matter what language it's in--it translates into something generally considered offensive in the native tongue of the wts and most its members.
Yeah, agreed. But I think most reasonable people will laugh, and then when they realize that they're laughing at, namely, deaf people using ASL to communicate their ideas, they'll probably feel a little crummy. I know I did initially. But after thinking more about it, especially after looking at the Japanese version of the video, then I thought, "why don't American deaf people just sign these things more appropriately?" I think it's a kinda jerk thing to just dig your heels in and insist upon your own way of doing things, when you know that it makes others uncomfortable, and when you can easily change whatever the behavior is.
You said it would have no affect on kids, so you should not have any objection to pantomiming it yourself at a daycare.
I don't know if you're just upset because I'm disagreeing with you, or what it is, but I never said that. What I asked you to do was to provide a hypothetical that illustrated how exactly this would affect kids, and upon what circumstances, and how that would that even work anyway. Except for giving me the ridiculous suggestion to put it upon myself to go visit some daycare and perform the ASL about masturbation to kids that don't even know what masturbation is, which would result in more confusion (but, I admit, also sounds hilarious - like it belongs in an Adam Sandler movie), you haven't even come close to doing that.
I would also argue that despite the bubble you're wanting to put kids in, they're likely to see a whole lot worse standing in line at a grocery store near the magazine rack, than viewing a bunch of hand gestures in a religious context and when they probably won't know what they mean anyway. (And if they do, they won't be traumatized by them!)
Now you are claiming I haven't addressed your questions. Poppycock; I've addressed them multiple times.
Haha... poppycock...
Yeah well, no you haven't. Not only that, but you've misunderstood me on several occasions now. If you're going to continue, you should slow down, quote me directly, and then respond. That way I can be sure you're actually interacting with me, and not with some version of me that you've invented in your own mind.
Thanks,
Jack
