  Jw beliefs are extreme. So what?

  When their beliefs turn into actions that harm other people they will be held accountable in our justice system. (USA)

  Individual freedom of thought is paramount to any society. Having a minor share of the population with kooky ideas is part of the price of that freedom.

  The ever popular "jw's will let their children die rather then give blood transfusions" has turned into a moot point here. The state will take temporary custody of a child for the length of time it takes for the treatment to happen. Kid gets treatment, parents save face and all is right in the world.

  uc berkeley orders cancellation of ann coulter speech.

  officials at the university of california at berkeley on thursday reversed their decision to cancel a speech by conservative firebrand ann coulter.. the university had announced wednesday that it was canceling coulter’s appearance following several political protests in berkeley that turned violent.. but on thursday, the university said it had found a venue where it could hold the speech on may 2, instead of the original april 27 date.

  however, a leader of the college republican group that originally invited coulter said the university was placing strict conditions on the event, and he said his group intended to reject the new terms.. before the reversal was announced, coulter had vowed to go ahead with an appearance anyway.. that probably would have put security officials on high alert and might have sparked another showdown in struggles over campus safety, student views and ideological openness.. “what are they going to do?

  Nonjw... I think that is an excellent idea. I am generally against giving subsidies to religious organizations. Take them away from all the churches.

  Td... There will always be kooky movements in the enlightened countries. The religion was not banned but its adherents were rounded up and arrested because of what they did to children. It looks like the movement is essentially dead now. JW or christian scientists who deny their children medical help should be rounded up and arrested as well.

  A government that confiscates a pacifist organization's bibles is the definition of a totalitarian government.

  Finkle... as a side note... do you think mein kampf or the nazi party should be banned as well? I only ask because here in the US neither the book or the party is banned. Their ideology is not taking over...not because our government has banned them but because the book is absolute shit and the ideology is fucking crazy.. and I can (and have) read the book. Our culture has deemed it extreme and has relegated it the few looney toon characters (sorry bugs bunny) that are left.

  banning ideas has everything to do with emotional reasoning (and a money grab) If my family is blown up by christian scientologists who are studying to be jews it will not change the fact that it is a bad idea to ban ideologies.

  Ideologies live and die by logic and reason. The athiest movement is small but it is making headway while the progress is being made despite the iron clad grip that religion had on the world just a few hundred years ago. Our progress as human beings is no doubt slow. That is ok. As Sam Harris has said "climbing down from trees and starting civilizations from sticks and stones is hard work" (loosely paraphrased)

  Who do you want determining what ideas you can or cannot have? Is it ok because the russian government did it???

  Maybe banning the jw religion will reinforce their beliefs. Maybe it will wake some up. If we cannot have the individual freedom of religion or from religion then we dont have much.

  Recognize totalitarian governments when you see them and speak out against them when you can.

  When a child is allowed to die because his parents refuse medical treatment his parents have incredibly stupid ideas with terrible consequences. I was that parent. I personally spoke to my doctors and told them I did not want my 3 day old child to have blood transfusions when it looked like she may need them due to complications during birth. There is nothing in my life that I feel more ashamed about then that moment. My own ignorance and unwillingness to question authority led me to that moment. There is nothing more important then being able to question authority and think freely about ANY and ALL topics.

  I would have been responsible to for my childs death. Not the organization. ME. Ignorant and unquestioning people kill and destroy lives. A free and open society allowed me to start questioning and reasoning that this religion was fucked up.

  My government banning my ideas would not have helped

  Hey orphan,

  I am not in favor of any government BANNING any religion or faction of religion. The only way of truly getting rid of bad ideas(religions) is to keep them out in the open where they can dispelled.

  There will never be a utopia of any set of ideas be they religious or secular. The price of allowing individual freedom is DIRT CHEAP compared to the price of giving your government the power to tell you what you can and cant believe and what church you can or cannot belong to.

  If you want to combat the jw ideology you will have to get in line behind me but allowing the government to do it for you is not the answer of a freedom loving people.

  Hey finkel..

  Drawing a line in the sand to protect innocents is what a moral secular society does. (jw blood issue here in the USA) Banning ideas is what a overreaching totalitarian government does. If you were a jw or are a jw then you know how dangerous thought police are.

  All revolutions, be they religious or governmental come from within, not from big brother dictating what its people should believe or should not believe.

  Being accepting of a government banning ideas because your mom and dad wont talk to you is not a reason to support a totalitarian power grab.

  Memorial

  what i noticed during the memorial is the over organised ritual aspect.

  for a non jw is must be hard to follow.. for me, i noticed that during the memorial there is no attention for the historical jesus and the historical events.

  it's all about the kingdom arrangement with it's central point, the governing body of jw.. do you noticed this also?.

  My kids go with their mother and I remind them every year...

  What does the bible say you should do with the bread and wine?

  What does the man on the stage say you should do with the bread and wine?

  If you are going to be a christian who should you listen to?

  In even better news... my oldest wants nothing to do with the jdubs and the younger on the same path.
