Now that's really an act of kindness that's hard to forget. It reminds me of a time in high school. My teacher saw that i was only having a small peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a bottle of water for lunch. So she gave me a bag of chips from her lunch wrap. She was Catholic and knew that i was a jw. i suppose that she had that unconditional acceptance all along.

Did you have higher ed when you were in? If so how were you treated as a result?
by highdose ini went to both collage and uni when i was a jw, i got marked and shunned as a result.
it seemed like every week there would be some dig made from the platform about " those that chose higher education" , my so called "freinds" were constandly on at me " why don't you pioneer highdose?!!".
i even had the ciruit overseer denounce me from the platform as being "spirtualy weak" never mind that most of the peers i grew up with had got themselves reproved or disfellowed and that i was the only who had been good!.

Yes, I got mixed reactions as part of the R&F. Before I enrolled in college, there was a lot of pressure to forget about college and pioneer. Even a missionary CO's wife from a another circuit was discouraging me to go. However, my parents insisted heavily that I go (Asian parents value education a lot, in fact i met an Asian mother in field service that wanted to throw away a WT because it was bashing college). So I did.
Ever since I was in college I was told that it was "a waste of time, you're better off pioneering, it's a foolish choice because armagedon can come any second, what if college interfered with your meetings and study," and other negative opinions. It affected my standing in that "I have weak faith and relying too much on the world."
Others were curious about college and asked a lot of questions like what i was studying, which college i'm going to, and what college was like. However, a lot of witnesses asked me how many years I had left to graduate...at almost every meeting.
I guess they weren't too happy when more R&F were considering college after I proved that going to college and remaining an active JW was possible.

Insulting Terms used by the WashTowel
by punkofnice inloading the language is a propogandist tactic to trigger a reaction in the mind.
a prime example is the word 'apostate'!.
i have been called 'spiritually weak' for quitting field service, meetings etc.. how would you respond (without swearing or giving a punch up the hooter), if you were called this?.

"Bad associations" - I remember that it applied to everyone outside the borg, even straight A nerdy kids who never get into trouble. Even some witnesses in the hall were called that because they rarely go to meetings, report a few hours of field service, etc. (spiritually weak) Of course other witnesses can accuse you of being a "bad association" and you're suddenly ostracized. My Bible teacher / "spirtual mom" once told me to be careful around a certain brother just because he hasn't been to the meetings often. It turns out that brother had a skin condition that prevented him from going. I can certainly feel the love of this borganiztion [not].

What video games were banned when you were a JW teen?
by BlackTwisted ini'm not a jw, but i'm kind of studying to be one though.. now that's out of the way, i remember mortal kombat was banned within my home-my mom isn't too fond of blood in video games..but yet, she plays dinosaur crisis sometimes....but then again, that was when i was 9...lol now that i'm 15 and i wanted mortal kombat 9 (still) my mom stil lsaid no...but then again, she would let me play it online..i dont know why..its strange, but hey, whatever works for her and me i guess.. .
um...lets see..any shooting games, or any games that has blood in it, she wont let me get.
so i can still play fighting games, just not the ones with blood...eh, oh well.i'm surprised she even let me play "dead or alive" and "soul calibur"!

Any video games with that M rating...
I even had to watch out for some of the T rated games. Kingdom Hearts was questionable even though it has that E rating, but no one
complained about Tetris...but I still got nagged that it was time wasted, and that I could have been doing something more "spiritual" (field service,
studying, anything WT related)

Some borderline, questionable stuff included: The Simpsons, Dragonball Z, Final Fantasy, Fighting games, and radio music

I'm just throwing this out there, but since you live in Philadelphia and I don't know what language you're looking for.
On google there's some language clubs in Philadelphia. For instance, there's a Japanese Language Conversation Club. They're free of admission and they welcome beginners, experts, etc. Here's their faceboook pages for more info:
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=157350194312523 - Feb. 1
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=168884756488154 - Feb. 17
You might find native speakers at their events and celebrations. For example, I found Japanese speakers at the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival, which was in Fairmount Park btw.
Another option is to scope out international students or immigrants at CCP, Temple, Uni. of Penn, or some other college. There's some students who studied abroad. I met a girl who studied abroad in France and Sweden. One of my friends came from South Korea to study at a university here.
There's always the library. If your library stocks foreign language books, then there's a good chance that you might meet some people who speak that language. You might even find foreign language instruction CD's and books. The Northeast Regional Library has pretty wide selection. I've seen Albanian, Arabic, Swahili, etc.
So don't just see the WT organization as your only option.

Hi Ponos! Welcome to the forum, I hope you'll have a great time here.
I'm from Philly too, and I'm in the process of fading since last year and going to leave.
In the 3.5 years you were gone, some changes were made like...
- - new song books were issued, some songs were taken out and some new ones were put in which sounded like...
- - no more book studies at homes, instead it's combined with the theocratic ministry school and service meeting
- - literature is delivered from Bethel to the Assembly Hall where it can be picked up by congregations
- - there's a public watchtower and a private watchtower, the public is for field service and the private watchtower is studied at the Sunday meetings and can be obtained at the hall or online: http://www.jw.org/
- - public talks on sundays are now down to 30 min., the watchtower study is still 1 hr.
- - there's magazine day which is the 1st Saturday of the month, where everyone meets at the Kingdom Hall for field service
but just to let you know, they still...
- - hound you to go out to field service
- - hound you to spend more time in field service
- - hound you to go to meetings
- - do those tract campaigns about the memorial and district conventions
- - have the same old methods of preaching: door to door, phone, letter writing, and informal
- - have nepotism
- - believe that the end can come any minute
Well this is all I can think of at 2 in the morning, so I suggest you read more posts on this site for more updates on the WT.
Other than that, I'm looking forward to your story.
