  I've given the subject some thought...

  ...and I've come to suspect that the death penalty is less a punishment for the guilty, and more a symbolic act for the "benefit" of the public at large...

  ...in part, because some crimes are so egregious that many people find it simply intolerable that the perpetrator of said crime be permitted to continue living.

  the non-profit organization behind the jehovah's witnesses in kraainem, belgium has been convicted of inciting discrimination and hatred or violence against former members who chose to leave the community.

  the court in ghent has fined jehovah's witnesses eur 12,000 but due to the indexation adjustment, the actual payout to the victim will be (at this point) 8 times higher.

  the multiplier seems weird to us, for those familiar with us law, the eur 12,000 is the statutory fine, taking into account the devaluation of currency, the court system sets an indexed multiplier for fines, currently at 8 - similar to how fines in the us were set in the 1800's at $100 would now be several thousands of dollars.. it is likely that the jehovah's witnesses will pursue this case to the european court.. according to the prosecutor, this case is therefore mainly about recognizing the malpractices within the community, not so much about sanctions: “in our opinion, this is a blatant violation of the discrimination law.

  most of the witnesses i knew never really talked about sex.

  whatever couples did was pretty much kept quiet.

  every once in a while a wife might complain to the elders or a friend that the husband is too demanding or even immoral because of the sex practices the husband wanted.

  It's kinda funny, actually.

  They're in a very weird place where - from their POV (due to 100-plus-years of ideological policy and internal stated standards) - they have to believe it...

  ...but...

  ...on a fundamental level, they don't dare try to really and truly prove it, because...

  a) ...any such proof ends up being so much conjecture, supposition, and unfounded assumption that it's pretty much nonexistent, and...

  b) ...virtually all authentic, demonstrable evidence (based on history, science and logic) almost always ends up disproving the claim.
