I believe mind control DOES exist. Interesting links by the way. All of this reminded me of my husband's uncle. He was one of those who died at the mass suicide at Jonestown...ie: People's Temple. I've heard my inlaws discuss this at length many times. He was well educated, working as an engineer in the Bay Area. Apparantly, the family claims they "lost touch" with him. He had moved to Ukiah, CA. before anyone found out he was no longer working at his profession. As time went on he had less and less to do with family and friends outside the Peoples Temple. Again, it wasn't till AFTER he moved to Guyana that anyone found out. The Peoples Temple believed in "doomsday". Many of it's followers had an intense fear of an immediate (any-day-now) end of civilization. Of course, their salvation teaching was that the sooner this happened, the sooner they would be whisked away to another planet/paradise. I think this qualifies for a case study in mind control. I've always wondered why so many cults require intensive training, studying, schooling? I believe it retrain the ole noodle, via mental gymnastics, to think albeit subversively in a borg like fashion. If there's a Dx axis in the DSM IV...then there must be a reason why.

Does Mind Control Exist?
by Dogpatch inthere have been several newspaper stories published recently implying that brainwashing and mind control do not exist.
this is very unusual in that, suddenly before the trial of suspected terrorist cult members, we start seeing spontaneous articles from different news sources telling the american public that mind control does not exist.. this has happened before.
if you want to see an excellent reply to the last time a similar disinformation/misinformation campaign was activated then read the article below the dotted line.

Mouthy,
Your post reminds me of several things I've noticed "missing" from my mom's. The first thing I noticed gone from the bookshelf, is the OLD red leather family KJV Bible. It was given to my mom, by my grandma (it had a lot of family information in it). The other thing that I've noticed is a picture of me at my confirmation (raised Lutheran)...of course, I'm standing there with the pastor and the youth pastor (who were wearing their white get-ups with crosses on their sashes) EVIL!!! I wish I had the nerve to ask where these things are. I hope they are hidden away, rather than thrown away. I would have liked the opportunity to have them, if she didn't want them any longer. -

Knock Knock...
by KistByQpid ini'd be interested in hearing some of the exjw's door-to-door experiences.
i've probably had the saturday morning door knocking...maybe 6-8 times.
i've never been "rude" except for once...when i had a particularly aggressive pair who wouldn't take "no thank you" for an answer.

Did you like it? Hate it? Were people rude to you? Bet you folks have some stories...who wants to share?

Ok...I'll admit I watch it. It has developed it's little demographic "formula" of the contestants and it's totally mindless entertainment...and I'm hooked! My JW mom especially HATES the show! "It's not REAL, those people don't KNOW what REAL survival IS" Ya don't say? No kidding?

Hi Sadie,
Thanks for your suggestions...and everyone else's too for that matter! Do JW's realize how inappropriate their "witnessing" can be? Do they care? I wonder. My mom used to be a really fun, positive and rather "hip" ole gal! I hate to say this, but she has turned into a rather bitter and negative person. In mixed company, she's let loose with some rather socially retarded rants...usually they start out with that zealous preface, "The problem with the WORLD is..." Several months ago, she pulled this in front of a friend of mine she had JUST MET! Later, I apologized to my friend and explained the situation. It is kind of funny/sad that as time goes on, she includes more and more of her new found vocabulary. At first she used words like: the hall, brother/sister, so-called, Christiandom. She really avoided "Jehovah" at first, but let me tell you what, she's wearing that one like a badge of honor these days, "Jehovah-God" The bible says, "Jehovah-God______fill in the blank" I agree with what everyone has said so far...and realize I need to establish some boundaries. Because she has broken my trust by witnessing to my kids behind my back, I need to be carefull not to give her additonal opportunities to do that. Oh yeah, my kids are 12 and 7. -

Thanks for the welcome,
My story: Very shortly after my dad passed away, the JW's came knocking on my mom's door. Now, I'm a "thirty-something" and certainly believe my mom can do as she pleases...BUT...and I feel like a real baby saying this, but I started to feel like maybe I had lost both my dad AND my mom. In preparing for her baptism, she began to get more and more um...zealous, so to speak. She has been baptized now close to two years. Since that time she has less and less to do with me (we live in the same town). Every time I see her, it is LESS about talking to be and MORE about ranting and raving about how my church is the "whore of Babylon"? She told my seven year old daughter (behind my back) that she wouldn't go to heaven. Yes, I was pissed. Partly because she knows I'm not "receptive" to the JW indoctrination, she will say these things to my kids on the rare occasion they are alone with her. I've taught my kids that we love grandma no matter what she believes...but...good grief, I'm afraid of leaving my kids alone with her! I am torn about how to deal with her. Where is the mutual respect? It's ok for her to rant and rave about "so-caled Christians" but if I try to engage in any conversation that she finds uncomfortable, she says, "I don't know, I'll have to ask "sister" so-and-so about that." Why would I care what "sister" so-and-so thinks? Then I won't see her for weeks at a time and my kids wonder if grandma is "mad" at them. Let me tell you, I try my hardest to avoid religious debates with her...it is like running through an obstacle course while being chased by a striped ape! Someone help me understand this insanity!!!
