Going back to an earlier thread, if the Apocalyse of Peter had made it into the Bible instead of the Apocalypse of John, is it possible that a group like the JWs would have never seen the light of day? Without Revelation there is no Armageddon, the 144,000 or a righteous new world where Armageddon survivors will live forever.

Is The Book of Revelation All About Me & My Generation?
by ClubSandwich injws believe the book of revelation offers an account of what is to come in their lifetime.
but the problem is that every generation for the last 1900 years has thought the same thing.
and, every generation has been wrong, even though each new one thinks it will be about me and my generation this time.. most reputable bible scholars believe that revelation, also called the apocalypse of john, was not written to describe the future for people living today.

What I also find interesting from reputable Bible researchers is that the early Christian readers of Revelation would have understood exactly who 666 was. It was the numerical code name for Rome's emperor Nero--the symbolic beast mentioned in chapter 13.

Like all aocalypses, the prophet gets a strange symbolic vision where the future is described in metaphorical terms. They are not intended to predict the future but to give hope to the readers. And the apostle John wrote Revelation? That would be a revelation to me. I thought Revelation was written by an obscure guy named John, tons of them in the first century, who was squired away on the Island of Patmos.

CA, good comments on Peter's Apocalypse. One can easily see why it was not included in the canon. But why do you think Revelation made it? Do you think the theology of the 4th century had changed enough so that the ruling clergy were thinking this apocalypse applied to their generation? Surely the first readers of Revelation knew how apocalypes work. John was not trying to predict future events. Rather, he wanted to bring comfort and hope to the early Christians who were being persecuted in and around Rome. Help was on the way. God could be trusted to bring all things to a happy end.

JWs believe the Book of Revelation offers an account of what is to come in their lifetime. But the problem is that every generation for the last 1900 years has thought the same thing. Most reputable Bible scholars believe that Revelation, also called the Apocalypse of John, was not written to describe the future for people living today. Rather, it was written for1 st -century Christians in and around Rome. And while Revelation is a bizarre kind of book by today’s standards, apocalyptical books were not unusual in the ancient world.
An apocalypse that almost made it into the Bible is the Apocalypse of Peter. The author claimed to be the apostle Peter and Christian communities as late as the 4 th century thought that this book should be included in the canon, either in place of the Apocalypse of John—Revelation—or alongside it.
So what do you think, Is the Book of Revelation all about Me and My Generation?

Each of us has our heroes. In my personal life Abraham Lincoln is one of my favorites, but I have many. When it comes to people helping people, Ray Franz is in a league all of his own, a very classy, caring person. When I look at what people are doing on the internet to help people learn to think for themselves, I selected five people that stand out for me. But there are many truth-seeking vigilantes out there trying to help others. I in no way want to give the impression that we should be ranking people. One random act of kindness at a time is all it takes to make a person a hero in my opinion. There is no reason to think that there may not be millions of heroes in our midst, no one better than the other. Now I must admit that I do not have, at least at this moment, any cynical people on my personal list of heroes.

WatchtowerWatch.com - a new online resource for Jehovah's Witnesses (a brief tribute to the work of John Hoyle)
by cedars inas many of you will know, juan viejo2 (john hoyle) is a tireless worker behind the scenes when it comes to launching, running and assisting websites that help to expose the many fallacies of watchtower doctrine.
not only is he the genius behind ex-jw.com and insidethewatchtower.com, he also gave me a huge helping hand (before he even really knew me) by setting up jwsurvey.org, thus giving me a platform on which to run my survey and write my articles.. recently, john has also been helping randy watters (dogpatch) with a new improved version of freeminds.org (yet to be released) that will help to ensure the longevity and usefulness of that flagship jw website for many years to come.
if there is an unsung hero of the ex-jw community working behind the scenes to keep everything ticking, quietly tightening the bolts and oiling the joints of the apostate internet juggernaut, in my humble opinion it simply has to be john hoyle.. always looking for the next new project, and not content with already running an impressive portfolio of ex-jw sites, john has now launched watchtowerwatch.com - a website that will hopefully serve as a one-stop resource for some of the best jw-related content and stories on the web.

A very good post on the problems exJWs have after leaving. I am writing a sequel to my first book, Growing Up in Mama's Club, where I identify Seventeen Ghosts that may haunt a person after leaving the WT. I use ghosts as a metaphor for dysfunctional behavior patterns, residue from time spent in a highly-controlled religious group. I found the correlation to your phobias very interesting.
