Jehovah's Witnesses and Religious Tourism in Africa
by OrphanCrow inabout a month ago, i had started a thread about a video the wts had released of an interview with the minister of tourism for zimbabwe.. http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/topic/430330002/interview-zimbabwes-minister-tourism-jw-hq.
the video in that thread is no longer online.. the following article highlights the relgious tourism that the jehovah's witnesses have brought to africa.. african govts must prioritise tourism for economic growth: mzembi.
african governments must prioritise tourism development to stimulate economic growth and development on the continent, tourism minister walter mzembi has said.mzembi, who is also united nations world tourism organisation (unwto) chairman of the commission for africa, said tourism had long-term intangible benefits that came with enhancing destinations amid reports that zimbabwes projected 5,1% tourism growth for 2015/16 was ahead of all other economic sectors.. he advocated for the scaling up of religious tourism, telling the audience that jehovahs witnesses who thronged zimbabwe for their first international convention in the country had set a fine example which should be followed by all church organisations.. jehovahs witnesses held their international convention in harare.

That book sounds like the story of many South Africans. My own dad was a victim of a car jacking where the perpetrator shoved a pistol against his temple and pulled the trigger. Fortunately the ammunition was old and defective and did not fire. My dad calmly got out of the van and they drove off with it.
Since Mandela was released and the ANC won power through democratic elections, many white South Africans have immigrated to other countries. The tragic part is that many of those who left were professionals like doctors and engineers who were sorely needed in the rebuilding of South Africa. Most would say they left because they had fears of South Africa going the same way as other African countries like Zimbabwe for example. Personally I do not get on well with most white South Africans as my wife would tell you, they are simply too negative and bitter over having lost "white control" over South Africa and many even hope that South Africa spirals into complete disorder and chaos so they can say "see I told you so, those monkeys can't run a country". They would rather see South Africa become a political and social disaster to prove their disgusting point than see it become a success story of racial harmony. Truly disgraceful.

Blurring of genders
by Saltheart Foamfollower inas sometimes happens at elders meetings with the co, he has a letter from the branch to read out.
this rarely is made available later so any policies have to be acted on from memory.
this visit a letter was read about blurring of the genders and in particular brothers dressing in a metrosexual style - tight clothing was mentioned again.

Why would anyone be surprised that the GB have an issue with "worldly" dress? Just look at those seven pasty white doughboys and it makes complete sense. What Data-Dog wrote is spot on. I am way past caring what the GB say but I do love an opportunity to laugh at those silly old geriatric doughboys who hold sway over millions of lives. It boggles my mind how people let these seven pathetic excuses for men dictate their lifestyles. I would love to shake their hands and bully them innocently with a little over zealous squeezing - there's nothing like some classic good old fashioned alpha male behavior to demonstrate just how much one is not intimidated by their soft pastry-like presence. -

Although I have not read it myself, it does look interesting and as someone who is very well read in sub-continental African history, I can say that small quote from the book indicates he knows what he's talking about.
You're clearly interested in African history and the impact religion has had on it so when I get back from vacation I'll go through my books and put together a list of recommended reading if you like (we get back tomorrow so I'll have a good list for you by Tuesday).
During the Rhodesian and Mozambique war in the 70's and 80's there was a constant ebb and flow of refugees between Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), Mozambique, Malawi and South Africa. Unfortunately for the refugees they often traded one poor situation for a worse one. South Africa offered the best stability but most often they were not welcome there and when they were, they would find themselves under the heel of apartheid. Since much of the labor in South Africa consisted of migrant workers from Rhodesia, many refugees used this as a cover for escaping to South Africa. A truly sad and hopeless situation for so many.
One of the strangest observations for me growing up in Africa is the odd relationship which exists between those who call themselves Christians and their cultural superstitions and beliefs. It's as if mainstream religion has created a continent of confused religious orphans who can't quite decide which beliefs should take precedence in their culture.
Interestingly, Zionists have enjoyed a large and ever growing following on the sub-continent.

Christianity and Islam have played a huge role in the shaping and destruction of African cultures. The fact that missionaries were a necessary part of successful colonization was not lost on those rebelling against colonialism and imperialism. From the very early uprisings in Africa (particularly the Mau Mau uprising) missionaries were particularly targeted for being associated with colonialism and I can't say I blame them.

Touche OC. Even Neville Chamberlain thought Hitler was a "Decent and reasonable" man. That old adage "the devil looks after his own" could certainly prove a point for Mugabe and his seemingly endless rule. -

What I do find hilarious about this is Mugabe's old ZIPRA party used to persecute Christians, particularly JW's. Africa is not without a sense of irony. -

Sounds exactly like Jim Jone's last few sermons before declaring that chugging cyanide was the way to escape to god's kingdom. I kid you not, almost identicle words if you replace "Assyrians" with "Satan's persecutors".
