There's just something about theists that say they were once atheists....
by logansrun inyou know the type, the ones that say, "oh yes.
i tried to not believe in god..." or "when i left the jws i became an atheist, but since i found jesus..." simply put, i don't believe them.
i don't think they ever really stopped believing in god.

Why is it so presumptious? Agnosticism in whatever flavor (theism or atheism, with extra credit for atheism because of the lack of extraordinary evidence) is the only rational decision.
It is presumptuous because you are presuming that all theists have not thought things through. You saying that agnosticism is the only rational decision is just the sort of comment I was talking about in my ‘number three.’ It is just so…smug. (sorry.)
But you have a right to your belief that you and people who believe like you are the only rational and correct people in the world.
I thought “Mere Christianity” was a logical explanation of Christianity. Others here do, too. And, of course, some others do not. (That would be all the thoughtful, rational, smart, correct people, right?)
Thanks for letting me rant again, and please have the last word. :)

Ok, I don’t want to start anything here, but I have to rant because this thread really gets me. My thoughts:
Number one, regarding CS Lewis:
Because Lewis lost a debate one time (‘one jarring bump in his intellectual road’) about his book Miracles, we come to the conclusion that he has a ‘sad grasp of logic’?
I don’t think that conclusion is based on good critical thinking… or logic.
Number two, regarding atheist converting:
I think it is ridiculous to say that an atheist can’t come to change his or her mind about what they believe and become a theist… and then perhaps convert to a particular religion, like Christianity. Give me a break it happens all the time. It just pisses off some current atheists.
Number three, ‘and another thing!’:
It’s is as if some atheist think that if everyone THOUGHT hard enough about what they believe, everyone would be atheist. I find that very presumptuous.
Thank you…I will now step off the soap box…..

Are there any teachers on this board?
by logansrun inso, i'm thinking about becoming a high school teacher.
i'm finishing up a summer course at my community college and will be going to northeaster illinois university in the fall.
i've been thinking about majoring in biology and secondary education (instead of history and secondary ed.).

I would recommend trying out my job while you go to school to see what the classroom is really like. ( I am an aide in a continuation high school and am working slowly on my degree to one day teach.)
You can try out being an aide in many different teaching environments, see what different teachers do, see what the politics really are like, and see if you have a real love for the profession. I know I do. I had my job in the classroom for a week and I knew I would never leave. I also knew I would never go over to the ‘regular’ high schools.
I just think you have to actually be IN some classrooms for a little while to decide if you might like teaching.
There are a variety of types of schools and administrators, so jobs for high school teachers vary widely in many ways. Volunteer in variety of classes for a semester if you can’t get a paid position.
Just my two cents J

What do you think of Baha'i Faith?
by Eyebrow2 injust a little curious....i had gone to one of the websites i found by searching baha'i faith online.. i found a site that wrote on 9/12/01 saying:.
the destruction of the trade towers and the attack on the pentagon and its related events should be considered a terrible warning for the safety, security and salvation of humankind.. the second international baha'i council condemns the use of terrorism and violence as a means of change, but we have tried to warn the people of new york for years of these coming disasters, accurately predicting on national television the first act of terrorism against the trade towers in february of 1993. these acts of horrific destruction are only the beginning if the governments and peoples of the world do not submit to the authority of god and his messengers and their clear and evident proofs.. what is up with that???
i know nothing really about it so i figured i would pose the question on this board: is this religion a bit fanatical?

The Watchtower Society Is NOT A Cult!
by SpannerintheWorks inok, don't get too excited, that is not what i think.
but it is what my wife (brought up as a jw) informed me this morning, after i said that i think the wbts is a cult.
the thing is, she has kind of "challenged" me to prove it!

As I skimmed through these posts I didn't see anyone mention Steven Hassan and the book, "Combatting Cult Mind Control," This excellent book does not talk about the JWs, but talks about cults and anyone who has been a JW can make the connection. EXCELLENT.
Also, Steven Hassan has a website with lots of great info:

If this has been mentioned already, sorry!
