  Michael Brown verdict discussion policy - take II

  i had originally thought that making the rules clear about what was and wasn't going to be allowed when discussing the michael brown verdict that we'd be able to avoid some of the unpleasantness that surrounded the subsequent trayvon martin trial discussions.. michael brown verdict discussion policy.

  i had hoped that once the evidence came out there would not be as many people promoting opinions that contradicted it.

  unfortunately, that appears to have been naive of me.

  All I can ever tell you if what your words make me believe that you think. And I think it's very very clear that there were a good many people who pre-judged the case based on race.

  You don't know that. You can't know that.

  I think that YOU prejudge anyone that brings up anything about racial inequities in America as racist, and it is not true that anyone who brings up racial inequities is racist!

  Can you appreciate that for someone to argue they think the decision is injust based on a whole number of racial equality issues and then turn round and say their opinion of the case is not in the slightest motivated by any consideration of race.

  Considering race or racial issues in society does not make a person racist.

  I think it does when they have already decided the result they want based on race and are deparately picking on trivialities to try and justify their choice.

  How can you know they have already decided the result they want based on race?

  You can't know this. You DON'T know this.

  Heck, with me for example, you could not even know the result I want in this case, let alone why I want it. because I never, ever, even once said the result I want.

  A simple test is whether, if the races of the actors involved were reversed, would opinion of guilt or innocence be reversed too? If you suddenly think the opposite result would be correct then guess what - you're a racist! It doesn't matter whether you are black or white.

  the problem is you don't KNOW how anyone, other than yourself, would respond if a participant on this board is a racist based on this test

  You can only give yourself the test.

  Just because someone does not agree with a verdict or because they see evidence of racial bias does not make someone a racist.

  after a thorough investigation and weighing of the evidence the grand jury has decided not to indict the officer.. the reaction so far seems as predicted - people refuse to accept that the result represents justice despite claims that is what they wanted.. there is now violence and vandalism, including gunshots.

  let's hope the police contain the troublemakers.. .

  You list multiple things.

  Political Representation? They have that already.

  not proportionate to their numbers.

  Education? One generation. Intelligence isn't genetic or inherited.

  So then the children of freed slaves, as a group, would have been just as educated as the as the children of whites, as a group, if they had worked hard enough?

  Wealth? Many more factors - could be one generation past educated for normal people (majority of whites, not the 'elite super rich')

  ok...so you are saying the grandchildren of freed slaves would have had about the same wealth as their white counterparts, if they had worked hard enough?

  Absolutely not! The biggest thing I see holding it back is the culture and those who try to excel at those things being labeled as acting 'too white' or a traitor to their race/culture. Holding back their own culture from advancing then blaming everybody else for the consequences. And I'm talking about today, not talking about 40+ years ago.

  EndofMysteries: ok, so there is nothing biologically holding AFrican Americans back from equality in this country.

  Aassuming African American worked as hard as they could, about how many generations past slavery do you think it would take for them, as a group, to achieve quality with whites as a group in terms of wealth, education, political representation, ect?

  but that does not go strictly on racial lines.

  All African Americans do not have sickle cell anemia.

  if it was a true biological difference in the races, all members of the race would have it. and people other races would not have it.
