VM44 thanks for stating it succinctly. I think that says it all.

NC wrote: It is a cheap shot and ad hominem attack. But people I know that were never JW's don't often use this against me. Unfortunately, it is more commonly lobbed by fellow ex-JW's.
Yeah, the ones that did it to me briefly attended the kingdom hall and were around witnesses long enough to know the culture (they "grew up around the truth", to use a witness phrase). It was nothing especially malicious, just something they said in the heat of the moment - but a sucky move nonetheless.
Sad really. We have come so far, and they feel the need to continually counsel us and throw in our faces that we once made a mistake.
Yeah, I think it's a douchebag move to throw anyone's mistake in their face during an argument. Everyone's made mistakes during their lives. And no one is the same person they were years ago. So when someone attacks you or your background while arguing a topic, that means that they're losing the argument.

I AM THINKING OF BECOMING A CULT LEADER- ANY SUGGESTION?
by Mr Facts ini am quite impressed at the power the gb wields globally and it prompted in me the strong desire to start my own religious cult.
i wouldnt any hurt anyone though, my goal is just to experience the privilege that power and authority gives and in the process grow financial empire.. i am presently putting down some strategies down in paper and i have been watching many videos on youtube and accessing cult-related materials, learning from cult leaders arround the world and observing their modus operandi.
please if you do have any suggestion, freely offer it, i will appreciate it so much.. .

Pretend that your God's only channel, recruit some families, and make them watch a DVD entitled: "Become Yahweh's friend: Listen, Obey, and Be Blessed."

Yeah, I found some of the language to be different from the typical JW speak as well. Just the fact that it is a Pixar style cartoon is quite a change from the graphic depictions of "My Book of Bible Stories." Could this be a first attempt at increasing manstream appeal? Evangelicals and other fundie types love to use words like "blessed" and "godsend." Maybe the WT wants to reel in some of these folks and their kids due to all the young'uns leaving. This presentation is as vanilla as it gets.
Then again, any religion that freaks out over an innocent wizard action figure will turn off a lot of people.

Yeah, and the whole 'Obey' theme reminds me of the artist Shepard Fairey's creepily ironic 'Obey' poster:

Gotta love how Morris holds up "My Book of Bible Stories" and says "What a godsend this proved to be!" That book probably planted the seeds of my rebellion against the Watchtower- seeing the temper of old Jah fully illustrated sealed the deal. I never got baptized and kept away from the Bible for a while. Thanks for the push, GB!

The Gladiator wrote: There are forces at work throughout the universe that have been present for billions of years. The universe may be conscious of its existence, though not in the way we think of consciousness. There may well be other life in far away galaxies.
To me, this is billions of miles away from a personal god we can kneel down to, worship or talk to.
To me, this IS God! I guess it's just a matter of semantics at this point. To me, God is not about worship or a personal relationship, but about awe. It's also not about creation, or the origin of the universe. God IS the essence of the universe and existence, similar to the Chinese conception of the Tao.
Now I realize this is not what most people think about when they talk about God. But it's just because we're stuck with the God 'image' from the Hebrew Bible.
