After I DA'd I threw all of the magazines, tracts, books, and notes I had in the recycling bin. I also tossed the library CDs, DVDs, and DVD liners. I did keep the blank, empty DVD cases.

WT books thrown into the dumpster...
by NVR2L8 infor the last few weeks i have been pretty busy as we were moving to a new house.
my wife did most of the packing but when it came to the move, i realized that there are things we own that we had forgotten about because we haven't used them for years!
on top of the list was old wt publications that no longer contain the "truth" and publications available on the wt cd.

I'm Melting....any ideas?
by Patty Cake ini'm living in that zone in the usa which is going thru a super bad heat wave...it's been 100-109 f, with a higher heat index and high humidity for more than a week now.
i don't have ac and can't get one - i live in a baseemnt apartment with 2 windows, both of which are too small to fit a the smallest unit i've seen.
i have fans, but it's not enough.

Lightweight clothing that wicks moisture off the skin (think Under Armor, Nike Dry-Fit, etc). Take a rag, dip it in ice water, wring it out, and wrap it around your neck. Put a block of ice in a tub (to contain the water when it melts) and put it in front of a fan. I'm not sure where you are or how humid it is but you could also get a small swamp cooler designed for a garage and just fill the water tray manually.
If you're sweating a lot drink some Gatorade, Powerade, etc. or eat some salty snacks. If you replace the salt you're losing you'll feel better.

Have friends over and just celebrate. Eat, drink, and socialize. I don't know if you live in the U.S. or not, but if you do most restaurants offer you something free on your birthday. Personally I like to go to wine or martini bars and just hang out with friends while enjoying some good food and drinks. Usually other people will hear it's your birthday and come up and say hi and buy you drinks. I'm a guy and it happens to me every year, if you're a girl like I'm assuming then you'll get more drinks than me.
If you don't drink you can still just go out and have a fun day. Go see a movie, go to a museum, take a small road trip. Go do something you've always wanted to do but haven't. Just make it a fun day for you.
Oh, and happy early birthday!

I would just buy a cable that is DVI on one end and HDMI on the other.
For sound use a 3.5mm to RCA cable (or optical if your computer and TV/receiver have optical).

I knew JWs that would go watch fireworks, they just refused to stand or salute if the national anthem was sung or the pledge recited. And yes, I find it very hypocritical. I could tolerate them not standing/saluting but I also knew ones that would talk during the national anthem at ball games. You don't have to stand, that's your right, but you could at least just sit there quietly and be respectful for a few minutes. I'm sure your sitting and talking gave a great witness to those around you if they bothered to ask why you didn't participate. And then you could run to the hall and give your experience of persecution because your rude behavior angered others.

What shaped your secular/political direction after JW's?
by donny ini have been part of this site for some six years and i am amazed how diversified folks have become on the secular/political front after leaving the organization.
some are far left and some are far right and others in between.. for me, i had just started getting into politics when i became a jw in 1982. my parents have been life long democrats, but i had voted for reagan not so much because i was really familiar with republican policies, but more because i didn't view carter as a strong leader.
besides high gas prices and long lines at the stations, it did not seem like he was making much headway in the iran hostage crisis and a rescue attempt he signed off on ended in failure.. after leaving the witnesses 10 years later, i was going to make sure i did not miss the upcoming election.

I don't vote along any party lines. I have conservative views on some issues and liberal on others. I vote for who I think will do the best job, or occassionally for who I think will do the least damage. I voted for W. Bush the second time mostly because I couldn't stand Kerry. I would have voted for Obama because like you I think McCain is too pandering to the far right. I like him when he's more central and I voted for him in my state election in the past.
Who will I vote for next year? No clue. I'm disappointed in Obama particularly concerning the bank bailouts. They are playing games and I have firsthand experience with the blatant incompetence and lies of BOA. There should have been more restrictions on the bailout. I'm not a fan of big governement or government restrictions on industry but the banks have proven again and again that they cannot act responsibly or ethically. And once you borrow money from someone you have to play by their rules. There are all kinds of stipulations when I borrow money from the banks and there is no reason that government loans to them should not be full of stipulations.
At the same time I haven't seen a strong Republican candidate. I do like Paul but I doubt he will win the nomination.

A Roku player will let you stream Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Pandora to a TV. They range in price from $60-100. An Xbox 360 or PS3 will also stream Netflix and Hulu Plus. They also give you the ability to buy or rent movies and TV shows on demand. Apple TV will stream pretty much whatever you have on your computer and plays Netflix.
The best option is just an inexpensive computer. There are no limitations on Netflix streaming to non-computers but with Hulu there are quite a few shows that it will only stream to a computer.

I cancelled my cable through Cox and just have internet service. Between the subscription fees, fees for the HD DVRs and the DVR service fee I cut about $125 a month off my bill. For my phone I just use my cell. For TV I subscribe to Hulu Plus and Netflix and I watch programs on the broadcasters websites. I will never pay for cable or satellite TV again.
I really like some of the shows on HBO, Starz, and Showtime but I can buy an entire season of a show on Blu Ray for half of what I paid a month for cable without any movie channels. If I really want to watch a movie and don't want to wait for Netflix I just go on Redbox's website, reserve the movie at one near me, and then go pick it up.
