those of us who have previously spent years and even decades reading and studying wts materials regarding the "beasts" of bible prophecy and how "false religion" has supported such know full well the wts's habit of slicing and dicing quotes so as to make it appear that "christendom" has turned their back on god in favor of world governments and especially the united nations.
in the july 8, 1996 awake, pages 22-25, an article entitled, the pope's un visit _ what did it accomplish?, criticizes the pope's visit and speech to the un during its' october 1995 50th anniversary celebration.
typically, the article begins with sliced/diced quotes which "seem" to "prove" the wts's historic proposition that, although well-intentioned, christendom's faith has been misplaced in man himself, and the un.

Well, the USSC hears this case Tuesday, but it will likely be some time before they issue their decision/opinion.
The vast majority of legal minds are expecting this to be just one more USSC victory for the WTS/JWs, so for someone to say "the WTS is going to win" takes no great effort.
HOWEVER, I AM NOT JUMPING ON THE MAJORITY'S BANDWAGON.
I have a gut feeling that the USSC is going to surprise folks on this one. Given the current "security" climate in the US, I believe that the Court will make a decision that will accomodate both the local governments' security interest and that of freedom of speech.
Possibly there could be fee-less registration of "groups", rather than of the "individuals", with groups issued "group ID badges", which they themselves are allowed to control.
In any case, I just don't see the WTS walking away with a clear victory on this issue at this point in history.

OK, so I'm a stupid ass. What's new?
Here are "easily-read" scans of the Issue from Front Cover through page 14.

It would still be nice if someone would post the text from the Russia and France articles.

Name:
There's all kinds of good stuff going on with this AWAKE issue, but it's up to us to try to uncover some of it.
First, there is likely significance in the fact that copies of the feature article were sent in these languages:
English, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Japanese
Why not Spanish, Portugese, or any number of other prominent languages?
Are these countries where at the time there were ongoing PR, Legal, or other problems?
What initiate this "PR" AWAKE? Something that happened prior or something anticipated?
On and on...
I don't know the answer to these questions,
BUTTTT
something is "SPECIAL" about this AWAKE ISSUE.
The fact that NO FEEDBACK was ever published on this Issue, EXCEPT on the "fluff" articles, PROVES TO ME that something happened at Brooklyn after the Issue was published.
Everyone knows that the WTS has always manipulated FEEDBACK printed as "QFR" in the WT, or "FOR" in the AWAKE. The fact that NO FEEDBACK was ever published re the THEME ARTICLES would seem to indicate a
serious split, otherwise SOMETHING would have been pub'ed, even if it was only "thank you" letters.
IT WOULD REALLY BE HELPFUL IF SOMEONE WITH THE CDROM WOULD POST THE VARIOUS ARTICLES, OR HOPEFULLY AT LEAST THE LAST SUBHEADING FROM PAGES 13-14.

Dino:
My "private email" remark was facetious in light of the post made a couple days ago on the other thread about how UN threads were pushing the "fluff" off page 1.
I think that this week has shown that there is still more to be uncovered on this issue if we go back over our tracks.
I don't have the 1998/9 KMs, so I'm hoping someone who does will parse them for any references to this AWAKE issue.
I get the feeling that this issue caused a "stir" at HQ, as well as with those r&f who actually know to watch the fine points of WTS Pubs.
This AWAKE may have been the very first WTS Pub which contained any significant amount of UN content, which did NOT also include an unmistakable (to the JW audience) concluding condemnation of the UN.
It would be great if someone with the cdrom would post all the UN articles, as well as the ones re Russia and France.
Name: Any research you can do on this issue would be appreciated.
yesterday docbob and i were in yahoo chat and he gave me these links which are contained in this thread re: rand corp:.
i was going to post them, yet i had succeeded my posting limits on new threads, so he did it.
SF:
Appreciate the thoughts.
RE: Rand
I briefly looked at the link that DocBob posted, and found the "pending" lawsuit interesting. It would be nice if followup info could be obtained, maybe someone could even email the guy who sued McCann.
Its been awhile since I looked at the other links, so I don't recall if Mc's DONATION could have related to his lawsuit????
As for the fact that McCann's technology might be used to build diesel engines which would find their way into tanks, military trucks, etc., that MIGHT be a problem for the WTS LATER, dependingon developing specifics. However, they could easily dispose of the stock (in consultation with McCann) if circumstances developed such that a conflict of principle developed.
Re: CHAT
I have twice sent you emails via your buddie, but you failed to answer both.
I HATE CHAT, and will not bother with such for other unexplained reasons.

Maybe we should take our discussion to private email so as to not bother everyone else with this nonsense.
OH WELL.
I'm really beginning to doubt your research skills. :)
You mean to tell me that out of all the HUMAN RIGHTS THEME ARTICLES, including those re the WTS's problems in Russia and France, that all the FEEDBACK for this ISSUE that you could find were 4 LETTERS regarding the "Young People Ask" article, 1 LETTER re the short "Washing Hands" article, and 1 LETTER re one of the "Watching the World" blurps?
Surely, you are missing all the FEEDBACK regarding ALL THE REALLY IMPORTANT ARTICLES FROM THAT ISSUE?
i'm pulling this out of the original thread since people are blowing by this as if it were nothing.. the blue portion appears on page 17 of the june 1, 1991 watchtower, in the article titled their refuge--a lie!, which criticizes "christendom" for seeking help from the united nations rather than jah.. .
"prayer and meditation at the united nations"-- robert muller .
"prayer, meditation and spirituality at the un are fascinating subjects.
BTTT for any lurkers who may have missed what is probably the BIGGEST FIND on this topic since the NGO Discovery itself.
Its a shame that "board politics" gets in the way of what is a "knock-down" punch to the WTS's head.
I didn't comment on Nab's first post, because I though that he demonstrated/made some very insightful points re this online xjw community.

Thanks for posting that link Hawkaw. Evidently that thread was posted at a time when I was extremely busy, because I had forgotten it, assuming I even seen it.
HOWEVER, even though that thread does make some mention of the UN articles, THE ARTICLES RE THE WTS's PROBLEMS IN RUSSIA AND FRANCE WERE NOT DISCUSSED, NOR WAS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ARTICLE AS A WHOLE DISCUSSED
NOW FOR A BIGGIE!!!
All AWAKE readers know that practically all issues contain FEEDBACK re previous articles in the "FROM OUR READERS" section.
I'm not going to spoil it for the other researchers here, so fast-forward to later AWAKE issues and take a gander at the FEEDBACK re all the pertinent articles in this issue (UN, Human Rights, Russia, France, etc.)
WAIT!!! Before you LOOK, make a prediction whether JW READERS were "shocked" or "fully supportive" of this "new light position" re the UNITED NATIONS.

SPECIAL AWAKE ISSUE PUBLISHED FOR UNITED NATIONS
A few months back Dino posted this link:
This long page showed:
------------------------------------------------------------------
A Long Job Finished
English, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Japanese
Awake; 22 November 1998; p. 3-5; Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, Inc., 25 Columbia Heights, Brooklyn, NY 11201-2483, USA
Commemoration of the signing of the UDHR and the role of Eleanor Roosevelt
------------------------------------------------------------------
That page actually links from this page:
=========================================
Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Worldwide Collection of UDHR Materials
This section presents OHCHR's worldwide collection of materials on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), including various resources developed by governmental and non-governmental organizations both on the occasion of the Declaration's 50th Anniversary (1998) and prior to/after the Anniversary year. The collection is unique in the world and comprises more than 400 items and includes:
printed material (such as books, books for children, books in braille, newsletters, pamphlets, calendars, articles, photographs, posters, campaigns and documents, etc.), multimedia material (including audio cassette recordings in various national and local languages, CD-ROMs, videotapes and documentaries on the UDHR) and a broad array of souvenirs (bookmarks, key chains, magnets, stamps, pins, postcards, stickers, etc.).
The establishment of this collection - a selection of which is permanently displayed at OHCHR's Headquarters in Geneva - is a contribution to the global dissemination of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as envisaged in the Plan of Action of the United Nations Decade for Human Rights Education (1995-2004).
===========================================
NOW FOR MY POINT!!!
Although the archiving of this article by UNHCHR was briefly discussed, with Hawkaw indicating that he would try to obtain any cover letter that might have accompanied the article (which I can't recall the outcome),
I DON'T RECALL ANYONE EVEN BOTHERING TO POST THE ARTICLE, MUCH LESS DISCUSSING THE ENTIRE AWAKE ISSUE, WHICH WAS OBVIOUSLY PUBLISHED FOR UNITED NATIONS CONSUMPTION. (Please post link(s) if my memory is failing.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The FRONT COVER is a collage of 7 photos of people of different racial/ethnic groups from around the world, with the title of the issue:
WILL THERE EVER BE
HUMAN RIGHTS
FOR ALL?
------------------------------------------------------------------
The INSIDE Front Cover, top half, is also a similar collage. The bottom half is the "index of issue articles", with 2 Articles "specially featured". (More on these later.)
------------------------------------------------------------------
The feature article is the UNHCHR archived article:
A "LONG JOB FINISHED"
Pages 3-4 is the text, with page 4 including a quarter-page box titled, "What Are Human Rights?"
Page 5 contains a fullpage box entitled, "The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights", featuring a large photo of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Pages 6 and 7 feature a one-on-one interview with UN Headquarters Chief Liason for OHCHR, with page 7 including a 2/3 page box titled, "The International Bill Of Human Rights", pasted over a large photo of the UN buildings and emblem.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Pages 8-11 feature the article, "Human Rights and Wrongs Today", which is a listing of some of the rights in the UDHR, with "evidence" that such rights are NOT being met around the world.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Pages 11-14 feature the article, "Human Rights For All--A Worldwide Reality", which is a PROMO for the WTS's "worldwide literacy program", as well as AN EXTREMELY TONED-DOWN VERSION of its end-times theology.
Pages 13 and 14 each feature a halfpage box titled, "The Source Of Human Rights", and "Education For Peace".
----------------------------------------------------------------
SO, THE ENTIRE FIRST HALF OF THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN A DEMONSTRATION OF HOW CLOSELY THE WATCHTOWER SOCIETY AND ITS ACTIVITIES INTERELATE TO THE UNITED NATIONS AND ITS WORK!
Now, what about those 2 Articles "specially featured" on the Inside Front Cover?
----------------------------------------------------------------
The first of the two appears on pages 19-22, and is titled, "The Edict of Nantes--A Charter for Tolerance?".
Is this article UNRELATED to the theme of this Issue, like the preceding "Lake Victoria" article, or the following "YPA" article?
Well, the title of the halfpage box covering pages 20-21 should anwer that question:
"Religious Freedom In France Today"
Coincidence that this "issue" appears in this AWAKE? I don't think so.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, the second "specially featured" article appears on pages 26-27. Its title is "Russian Judical Chamber Vindicates Jehovah's Witnesses".
Coincidence that this "issue" appears in this AWAKE? I don't think so.
----------------------------------------------------------------
"Watching The World" includes an article quoting UNESCO re "Water Crisis", as well as one titled "Blood Seminar In Bulgaria".
----------------------------------------------------------------
"From Our Readers" includes "feedback" on previous articles re "Russian Press", "Family Resists Nazis", and "Racial Pride" (equality).
----------------------------------------------------------------
============================================================================================
First, does anyone dispute that this AWAKE Issue was "put together" for United Nations consumption?
Second, DOES NOT this well demonstrate what I have been telling everyone all along that UN-NGO status was "Step One" in a well thought out strategy to attack "preaching restrictions" all around the globe, which later included appearances at numerous Conferences, Hearings, etc., "association" with numerous HR Groups around the globe, and even taking advantage of the Holocaust to send WTS Reps out to do PR work with unsuspecting groups interested in this topic.
It would be nice if someone who possesses 1998/9 KMs would scour through such to see if there is any mention of this AWAKE and any "special campaign".
