I used to stand--never sit. I wanted to express as much respect as possible without violating our religious directives. However, I remember feeling uncomfortable about it. Especially in 5th grade, where our teacher was a tough as nails WWII and Korean War vet, and a vary patriotic gentleman (and an excellent teacher). He wore hearing aids from high frequency noise damage to his hearing from jet engines on aircraft carriers. Even my Elder father expressed respect and admiration for him.

Liberal Christians and Conservative Christians---The Inescapable Quandries
by mankkeli init seems to me that whether you are a liberal christian (for purposes of this discussion, one who believes that the bible isn't the inerrant word of god) or a conservative christian (for purposes of this discussion one who believes that the bible is the inerrant word of god), you have quandries that make your faiths untenable.
interestingly, these quandries are based on logical premises that each group of christians maintain, premises which are reasonable.. .
the christian who believes that the bible is inerrant has the logical premise that a god who wanted man to know him and understand his commands would give him a book that accurately reflects his nature and commands.

Let's back up a little further. It's impossible to defend faith on logic. To do so is to be played a fool, or perhaps even worse, bastardize the faith.
I do not consider faith to be irrational.
It is also impossible to defend logic without faith.

That actually doesn't cut the mustard for a real discussion. There is more than one kind of inerrancy, or definition for the term, if you will.

There is more than one definition for "cult."

Cold Fusion Update
by metatron inhttp://coldfusionnow.wordpress.com/2011/10/06/first-commercial-cold-fusion-reactor-tested-in-bologna/.
i continue to think that this device has survived too much examination to be completely fake.
the remaining question is how efficient is it?.

We already have relatively high temperature superconductivity (no need to go absolute 0 can use liquid nitrogen coolant rather than helium) based on the properties of ceramic materials developed at MIT in the 1980s. KEPCO S. Korea is putting together a demonstration project for a superconducting grid using US superconducting wiring. 10x-100x the current carrying capacity of copper (per conductor cross section) a fraction of the power losses (no voltage drop), and the cabling itself is fault current self limiting (it inherently stops transmission if fault current situation exists).
BTW the example above (EMC2 Corp) is funded by US Navy.

There are fusion techs in development that do not rely on heat engines. They develop current from the reaction directly. One is IEC fusion (above) and also focus fusion.

This is WB-6. A newer version is under development. The rings are packed with windings to generate an electromagnetic field.

I believe cold fusion exists after taking quantum physics in college, if only because of the uncertainty principle.
"Cold" fusion exists, of that there is absolutely no question. Many amateurs have built a Farnsworth Fusor in their garage producing a beautiful glow from decelerating charged particles.
The big question is net energy gained from the reaction, which has been elusive.
However, since there is a grid/framework in the fusion area, too much energy is lost through collisions.
EMC2 is working on an improved fusion process based on IEC principles, which is very promising.
It uses a focused elecromagnetic field to contain the negatively-charged particles, and a static electrical field results to accelerate the positively charged ones into it to produce collisions. Since there is no physical grid in the containment area, there are fewer collision losses.

Anwar Al-Awlaki and due process any thoughts?
by MoneurMallard inrecently anwar al-awlaki was killed by the u.s. government.
he was a u.s. citizen, and no due process was given, he was just killed outright, no arrest, no trial, no court.. any thoughts?.
