i went to the memorial last night.

it was the first time i have seen two big hd tv's on the sides of the stage.

during the talk memorial themed 'art' work was displayed on screen.

One image makes me want to research how the Roman death sentence was carried out. The 'artwork' showed a Roman soldier with a rickety ladder leaning against an already upright stake. A nearly dead Jesus with feet dragging was being hauled towards the torture stake.

It looked like the Romans would have to hold a limp bodied Jesus way up on the stake while one dude hammered in a few nails while standing on his half-assed ladder.

I was looking at this scene while pondering the mechanics of getting a man nailed up there when POOF!!! fade out to the corporate website logo (again no longer than ONE second), then black screen...

I went to the memorial last night. It was the first time I have seen two big HD tv's on the sides of the stage. During the talk memorial themed 'art' work was displayed on screen.

As EACH image would fade to black or transition to the next image the screen would display the logo for their website for 1 second and then disappear. Really bizarre. Saturated advertising for sure.

What TV shows were forbidden in your JW household?

in the u.s., three's company was not allowed.

it was explained to me that it was an immoral show because a man and women lived together and no one was married.

the sister who gave this observation was a family friend and we were newbies to the religion.. at least i somehow managed to watch the benny hill show undetected..

Just a simple question.

do you think it is easier for an elder to wake up to the wtbts because of the position he is in which gives him access to info that the rank & file would not be privy to, or do you think it would be harder for him to wake up because of all the prestige/power/admiration he receives as a result of being an elder, or does it come down to something else entirely?.

I was an elder for 11 years and the constant stream of letters from 'mother' to the BOE kept pulling back the covers and showed the org for what it is. Highest on my list of growing concerns were letters about handling sexual abuse. It became obvious that an elder had or would soon be exposed to personal liability.

Blonde, yes I think the KH bombing was around 1985. I was up late that night in Florida listening to my shortwave radio and was excited that I could hear Radio Australia. When I heard about the bombing I woke up my Dad to tell him. IIRC, the bomb was under the stage and the brother giving the talk when it exploded was thrown some distance but not severely injured.

Why must people do things like this?

A few weeks before my public nervous breakdown at the KH, I was interviewed onstage as an example for other young brothers to be a happy Elder like me...

I said the words because I was expected to, but inside I knew I did not wish anyone to experience the torture of that position.

On the outside I was a 'Happy, Joyful Elder', while on the inside I was planning suicide as my only escape...

The 'yoke is light', my ass it is.

Walking a thin line - Resigning Elder

warning of a long boring post ahead.

i feel like i need to vent my story out, as i feel quite helpless at the moment.. i'm 31 year old, married, father of toddler with another one on the way, due later this month.

i've been serving as elder for about 4 years now in a south florida congregation.

Hi Sanchy, your story and mine are similar. Even the part about FL, I am from SWFL.

I was an MS for ten years and then an Elder for the next ten... I was ready to kill myself even though I had two little kids. I was also killing myself slowly with alcohol. I ended up having a breakdown at the KH right before I was to start the meeting.

My wife has been supportive of my mental health now, and we very rarely discuss 'spiritual' things. I am happy, calm, sober and love my family more than anything...

I wish you the best, show lots of love to your family, be a great husband and Dad!

Quality of newer membership

on a previous post mamacita29 pointed up the low quality of new jw converts.. is the quality falling even more as the society use lower than low meeting, talks, broadcasts etc.. when i was active initially the organisation and standards seemed totally different today.

i have seen hard working intelligent elders fall by death or exhaustion.

the younger generation that came along never really grasped responsibility hence shortage of good elders, never mind the watered down to almost nothing quality of meetings.

What level of intellect do you attract by handing out the brochure "Answers to life's BIG QUESTIONS"

That title immediately struck me as Dumbed Down. I would not be able to keep a straight face while presenting that, and simultaneously be embarrassed.
