  It also seems to me that courts do not need to concern themselves with the viability of a religious organization in lawsuits. If they go bankrupt, tough luck.

  As to secrecy breaking down, I continue to wonder about the case the Society settled for 1.5 million dollars in which a Bethelite hit somebody with his car. Who gave the other side information about the standards and duties of a Bethelite? Such as being exemplary in meeting attendance and field service such that he might be considered an employee and not a volunteer?

  In an organization thick with pretense, I would be worried if I was the GB.

  Consider that we may be seeing a measure of justice done to the Watchtower because of their enormous GREED.

  Greed? Yes, the kind of greed for control that obsessed men such as Hitler or Stalin to dominate others.

  This thread seems to expose a typical foolishness by the Society: cover your a$$ in print but contradict that with "nudge-nudge, wink-wink" counsel by its representatives. The practical thing to do is make the two witness matter explicit, not ambiguous.

  Further, their greedy obsession with control has evolved into a habit of brothers calling Bethel with accounts of serious crimes - which then involve HQ in knowledge of criminal activity! This could avoided by a strong message of 'don't call us until you talk to the police'.

  I don't see that we would be debating this two witness subject except for the Watchtower's persistent greed for control and the resultant confusion from their moral cowardice.

  "in a better legal position than the Catholic Church"?

  I'm not clear why this should be the case. I raised the point about the CO's new absolute authority on a different thread and was assured that 'agency' still persists.

  The WTS does not have Catholic level assets - but could they be held liable for Catholic level damages?

  Furthermore, they do not have clerical privilege unlike priests. As a matter of structure, their 'call Bethel first' attitude looks to me like a potential disaster because it involves HQ in knowledge of a serious crime - that would not exist if they simply told elders, "inform the authorities and don't tell us".

  It also appears to me that the typical Witness 'firewall' of secrecy is breaking down. A Witness now can expose all sorts of wrongdoing discreetly, without getting identified - and that the lure of lawsuit rewards may trigger yet more exposure and defeats.

  Allow me to bring up another possibility: does this issue tell us something about the Governing Body?

  Now, the Organization has done many cold, mercenary things for money or protection from liability. Such repellent moves (such as cruelly dumping long term Bethelites into the worst labor market in 60 years) might make us think that the GB are utter cynics, lacking any real faith and having no fixed beliefs.

  However, I see no practical benefit in their adherence to this stupid idea. It encourages lawsuits, legal trouble and very bad press.

  How can it be anything except evidence of a sick, fanatical mindset - as blind and thoughtlessly cruel as their own followers?

  I would have preferred that they were just cynics. Cynics can be reasoned with.

  In this, I would be ABSOLUTELY pleased to be wrong.

  However, if the Society cannot escape liability by making the CO's absolute monarchs then I must wonder about the motive behind the change.

  By default, I would be driven to think that this change happened to solidify the Watchtower's brand of financial malfeasance - in which they appoint or delete elders in order to steal Kingdom Halls and sell them off - to enrich themselves.

  I conceive of a particular horror here......

  So, they refuse to let go of their fanatical stand on two witnesses - and thereby, lawsuits against them never stop, as well as the abuse of children.

  However, by isolating the CO's from the Society they get away with these crimes because the CO's are utter fools and have no property in particular.

  The sexual abuse of children in the Organization goes on indefinitely because they have found a way to insulate themselves from the horror they have caused.

  Any of you lurkers think it would be wrong to describe this as "Satanic"?

  King Tut was a sickly disaster. These idiots didn't understand inbreeding like we do. Look at old suits of armor and consider how much taller we are today(generally). The richest kings didn't have refrigerators or running water on tap. Or flush toilets. Or modern medical wisdom to fend off plague.

  And they thought bathing was unhealthy. I laugh everytime I see some time travel adventure as there never is any reaction to our ancestors such as "God, you people stink!" or "I thought only dogs had fleas".
